What is the name of the software used for the dock on the side of the desktop?
-
-
The dock on the side is from Ubuntu's Unity Desktop. When I took that screenshot, I had Ubuntu 11.10 installed. Now I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 alpha and I'm rather happy with it.

Ubuntu is based on Linux, which is an open source operating system.
A casual user, who is somewhat familiar with Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac, should have no problem navigating through Ubuntu/Linux. The menus, buttons, icons, etc. may look a bit different and the location may be a bit different, but IMHO, it's a bit like moving from Windows XP to Windows 7, or moving from Windows to Mac.
The biggest disadvantage of Linux is that a lot of software is only available on Windows/Mac, but not on Linux.
I am using Linux because:
- it is open source (for me that's a matter of accountability)
- all applications I need are available
- it is always at the forefront of technology
- it is free - as in free speech (and Debian's "Social Contract" ensures it stays free)
- it is free - as in free beer (I do donate to open source organizations, but that is entirely at my own discretion)
cheers,

Could anybody send information about Mamory and SPD from CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting ? I interested on timings on orginal HP memory modules.

I installed a fresh windows 7 copy and there are no exclamation marks in the device manager.
When I connect my phone to the eSATA/USB port via USB it starts charging, but it won't connect via USB. Other USB devices aren't being picked up by windows either. What am I missing?
Thanks.
EDIT: Turning off eSata in BIOS does not help. If I plugin an USB key it comes up in boot options if its in the right side. It won't come up if its in the USB3 ports or the eSATA/USB combo.
EDIT2: Can someone confirm that the USB port in the USB/eSata combo should work with the last BIOS? Thanks. -
Linux is free if your time is worth nothing
That UI looks beautiful though. If the Adobe Creative Suite programs worked on some flavour of Linux I might try one out.

How is the Quadro 3000 for gaming? I would like to play Skyrim and Star Wars:The Old Republic. Can the graphic cards in the 8760w be upgraded?
-
-
Ok- so a couple months down the road in usage and I just wanted to post a few key things I haven't seen in the discussion yet.
First, I did the upgrade to the F.23 bios and it fixed my only major issue: when I would hibernate or sleep in Windows Ultimate x64 the system would crash, but there was nothing in the logs, no dump file, no nothing to troubleshoot on. After doing some research it seemed like it could possibly be an issue with my SSD, but it had worked fine for a solid 2.5 months before it started acting up. Upgrading to the F.23 bios fixed the issue, now hibernation works flawlessly again. So maybe it was a controller/windows issue being able to write to the SSD after all?
Second, the lid seems to scuff or dent rather easily. I have heard more than one complaint, and my system has now suffered one pin sized dimple. This prompted me to look at better carrying solutions. I bought the slappa ballistic sleeve from Amazon for the system (careful, this is the 15.4" version as the 17" is not on Amazon at this time):
Amazon.com: Slappa SL-SV-109 15.4-Inch PTAC Stealth Laptop Sleeve (Black/Black): Electronics
In the 17" version, this sleeve fits like a glove. I would recommend this sleeve for those interested in sleeving their 8760w. The slappa logo isn't my style so I removed it- use a small flat bladed screwdriver to bend up the tabs on either side (underneath) that hold it to a metal disc inside the fabric. It'll slide right off, but it leaves two holes. I haven't covered mine yet, but I'll put a sticker or some kind of patch on it probably, or maybe just put in a few stitches of black thread. If you don't mind the slappa medallion, you don't need to go through this trouble.
I also purchased a Swiss Gear Ibex 17" notebook backpack. This as a mistake, the quality was horrible, more than one zipper wouldn't stay shut with the weight of this laptop and a couple books, not to mention that the interior protection sleeve for the laptop is way too small for a 17" system, let alone the 8760w. The zipper will close over the 8760w, but barely, and it leaves your corners very unprotected. I have gone back to my trusty Targus City Gear 17" backpack. I don't like the flimsy padding in it that allowed my system to gain its dimple, but the 8760w fits in it even with the slappa sleeve on it. I think this is likely as good as it gets with a behemoth like this system.
I've run a few distros of linux on the system via cd or USB as well and most work great. I had no issues with Ubuntu, but Knoppix wouldn't load. There are issues with Nvidia drivers if you try to run a Gnome desktop (or Debian distro) apparently. I haven't dug into that further as Linux wouldn't be a permanent solution for me anyway, I need the Adobe Creative Suite.
Overall I'm very pleased with the 8760w. I have had no need for more power, battery life has been reasonable for what it is (roughly 3 hours surfing, 2 hours crunching- usually using full brightness and leaving the keyboard light on, with the ambient light sensor on).
I think it's crap we can only run two monitors with Nvidia graphics, but it is what it is. I'd rather be able to crunch my video files faster.
My windows experience score is a 7.1- with the crutch being graphics. Apparently that is all the 3000 can put in there. Calculations are 7.5 with the 2820 processor, Memory is 7.6 with 16GB of Kingston HyperX installed, Disk transfer rate is 7.7 with a Plextor Sata III SSD in the primary slot and a WD Scorpio Black 750GB 7200rpm in the secondary.
I haven't seen any heat issues at this time, nor have I had what I consider to be excessive fan noise.
So far so good! -
-
My 8760w was silent freestanding but in the dock the fan runs. It runs low but audibly all the time and when it speeds up under load, it never slows back down except with a reboot.
Intel Core i7-2860QM 2.50GHz, 2 Crucial M4 512gb SSD's, 32gb RAM, Advanced Docking Station, HP 2709m monitor connected to docking station display port, USB and ethernet connected to the docking station, nothing plugged into the 2860 directly (except of course the docking station). -
For overclocking you can use nvidiaInspector. My 3000m allows 450->730 for the core and 1500MHz for RAM. Overclocking will not damage anything but be prepared for a lot of noise...

Another driver for the AMD/ATI workstation graphics has been released for the current notebooks 8760w/8560w/8460w with the firepro 5950m and 3900m.
the driver supports the graphics cards m5800 and m7820 of the previous generation 8740w and 8540w.
you can find the driver ( version 8.911.3.1 ) for win7 (32 & 64 bit ) here : AMD FirePro? Mobile Driver -
Hi to everyone at this thread, you guys have been more than resourceful along the process of making my purchasing decision. The beautiful beast has arrived in my professional life and I am loving it.
Model is: LG671EA
i7 2630QM
4GB RAM (will add more Kingston 4GB sticks to reach 16GB in total)
500GB SATA II (will add Kingston SSD HyperX 120GB as my primary, this one will go to secondary bay as I have ordered the HDD bracket part)
nVidia Quadro 3000M
However, I had three BSOD's in first two days. Check out hardware via diagnostics and everything fine there, just some driver causing the problem, and as some of you may guessed by now, it's ntoskrnl.exe type of error.
I am doing new Windows 7 Proffesional install from the disk that came with the 8760w but keeping the partitions made by HP, so it's not trully a clean install as it will be once my SSD arrives.
1. What do you recommend?
a. doing the full formating of the HDD with previously made recovery DVD's.
b. keeping the HP partition drives (0, 2 and 3 - System, Recovery and Tools)
2. One more question regarding RAM upgrade... Should I:
a. buy 4x Kingston 4GB SO-DIMM and take out the Hynix/Hundai one that came with the 8760w?
b. leave the original 4GB stick and buy 3x Kingston 4GB sticks to reach 16GB in total?
I am looking to buy Kingston 4GB ram model: KVR1333D3S9/4G

I won a HP EliteBook 8760w off of EBay the other day. It didn't mention anything about DreamColor in the auction listing. How can I tell if my computer has the DreamColor panel? The panel is extremely bright and the colors pop. Also, there is software installed for DreamColor calibration and DreamColor Gamma. There is no DreamColor sticker on the LCD, it might have got peeled off. I'm thinking the DreamColor software may come on all EliteBook computers to calibrate the screen.
The seller said he paid over $3000 for this computer new. I got this computer real cheap, maybe I got lucky. Thanks -
Just a quick recap on my aforementioned BSOD problems.
It appears to be caused by Validity Fingerprint Driver or fingerprint hardware.
8760w hanged when shutting down, leading to eaither BSOD or me having to hard reboot the notebook. After I did a clean Win7 64 Pro install from a supplied DVD and installing each driver one by one from HP website, the problem stopped since I decided to skip the Validity Fingerprint Sensor. Everything went fine. However, I couldn't resist and installed that fingerprint driver again and on my first reboot Windows would not shut down. Had to press power button for several second to hard reboot. Once I was back in Windows I went straight to System Restore and restored back prior to the event of installing the fingerprint driver. After that everything works fine except that I can't use fingerprint scanner anymore which is not that of a loss anyhow, just a fun geeky stuff that you get bored by easily in the long run and go back to password login in the end.
Btw, I see all notebook manufacturers have issues with fingerprint readers/drivers and I sure had the same problem back on my previous Toshiba Portege M800-10Z. I am guessing Windows is still not fully compatible with such devices and technology.
If anyone has some knowlegde on this or have experiences similar problems, please write about it, it should be known if it's common.
Thanks -
Frankly, if it's a DC panel, you'll know it just by looking at it anyway.

When I start up my computer, I get a message stating that I need calibrate my screen. When I click the message, it brings up the DreamColor Advanced Profiling Solution software. When I proceed in the software, it ask me to connect a DreamColor Colorimeter. I don't have one. Can I buy one or something? I'm not for sure this is a DreamColor screen or not. The screen is real bright and has great colors. This is compared to my son's Dell Precision M6600, which has the crappy Chi Mei panel (Dell is replacing the screen next week.) Also, some of the keys on the keyboard stick, any solution to this?

At work I received an HP 8760w. I also have access to an HP 30" monitor but am unable to get it to display in the correct resolution. The monitor is LP3065. I have installed the monitor drivers from the supplied disc and from HP support page. I also used the cord that was supplied with the monitor. The laptop has a NVIDIA 3700M video card and is running XP Pro. The LP3065 is supposed to run at 2560 x 1600. I can only get the 8670w to go to 1280 x 800 for this monitor. I hope one of you can help me get this monitor working correctly.

Preconfigured models with DreamColor are XU099UT, and XU101UT. You can see it under your battery.
It does not make any sense to me to peel off the beautiful sticker of DreamColor. But you said you get it for great price, I would say even it is not DreamColor, it's worth it -

Anyone know what eSATA card is in the 8760w? Need to know if 1x or 4x card, as this will affect the performance of the external drive I want to mount (RAID 5 G Speed Q).
Anyone using GTech devices over eSATA on this unit - any comments on performance? Or is an additional eSATA card required in the Express slot for optimum results.
Thanks -
Question: Can the 8760w be configured with Optimus?
My thread here, second post from last.

HP chose not to enable this for the elitebooks unlike dell. So even if you get a quadro card they do not enable it.

Thanks. I thought my rep wasn't a complete ignoramus.

Can a ATI FirePro M8900 graphics card work in the 8760w?
-
Previously I stated that I had no need for more battery life. Well that changed, as I have some conferences I'm attending this year and need to have my beast on me (normally I would carry a smaller, less powerful laptop- but that isn't an option anymore).
So I ordered the BB09 12 cell slice battery for my 8760w and put it to the test while traveling this last week. I thought everyone might like to know how it performed.
First, the size is more convenient than I thought it would be. It slides into the pocket in my laptop sleeve easily, and it also fits under the laptop, providing a nice raise (actually increasing typing comfort) underneath. It also has a port to charge itself on, when not connected to the laptop, which is handy. The only unfriendly design aspect, is that the unit cannot be docked, and have the slice battery installed so the dock charges both the slice and standard batteries at the same time. Some of the older HP's allowed you to be docked with the slice installed- so I was a bit disappointed here. All the same, you can install the slice, and use the charging port on the rear to charge both the BB09 and the standard battery at the same time.
On to the review of battery life. I spent about 3.5+ hours taking notes at this last conference and doing light surfing, downloading pdfs from the speakers, etc., during the course of the daytime. I still had life left, so in my hotel room I went to work on other projects still on just the batteries. I had WiFi on, HP optimized brightness (for battery life), was running Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Flash CS5, several tabs of browsing, Word and Outlook running as well, and got another 3.5+ hours of life out of my batteries before I hit the 10% warning. Since I was crunching Action Script 3.0 animation files, while building the HTML and graphics out in Illustrator and Dreamweaver, I was pretty impressed with the life span. I got at least 7 hours of the combined power of the standard and slice batteries.
On my plane ride home, I transferred several GB's of video files from a USB 3.0 Hard drive, charged an iPod, and watched 3 hours of HD movies in full screen mode. I started with a full charge. When I booted back up in my home office, I had 62% left, and an estimate of 4hrs 27min according to the power indicator.
When I purchased the battery, HP explicitly stated that battery life is entirely dependent on use, and what's installed in the system. I have already stated use, so my build is:
i7 2820QM
Dreamcolor
Nvidia 3000m
256GB Plextor Sata III SSD (primary OS drive)
750GB WD Black Scorpio 7200rpm drive (movies were played from this drive)
16GB Kingston HyperX DDR3
Intel 6300 Ultimate WiFi
Backlit keyboard
Bluray RW Drive
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Microsoft Wireless Arch Touch mouse
Personally, I am pleased with the battery. Even though it is a little extra to carry, it makes this otherwise difficult to travel with laptop, more mobile friendly. I'm pleased I can get through at least a half day going full throttle on this thing, and a full day if I just need to be on email and utilize the web.
My standard battery lasted about 2 hours if I was working, and this more than doubled that. I had hoped for double, so my expectations were met (and realistically a little surpassed as I went in hoping for double and ended up with more).
Hope this helps someone- I couldn't find any reviews of the battery slice before I purchased mine.mukiwa likes this. -
Hi,
I just received my 8760w (DreamColor, Quadro 4000M, 2860QM, 2x500GB). When first ran it I checked the memory in use and it was 2.4GB out of the box! I have been using my 8710w in Windows 7 for 2 years, and I don't have as many installed applications as there are in the unboxed 8760w (Despite I have 2 Visual Studio versions and several 3D programs).
What is the best way to clean the crap-ware? Can I install my own copy of Windows 7 Pro using the laptop license?
My laptop license says: Windows 7 Pro OA MEA. I don't know what's that, I still didn't activate it anyway.
Thanks! -
Hi all
I hope I am in the right forum for my question here. If not, please give me a hint # in which subpart of this forum I can ask my question.
I'm still not sure which model I should choose.
I think it will be one of these two models.
- LG671EA # ABU
- LY530EA # ABU.
The only difference I can see is the processor and maybe the display (but here I am not sure, do you see a difference there and can explain it to me)
Then a other point:
In the manual I have read, that I can upgrade the 8760 we with
1x SSD and 1xHDD and 1x DVD Drive.
But in some webstores, It was written, that I can only have a second hard drive if I offer up the DVD drive.
Can you give me a categorical answer about this point?
Thank you very much in advance
Aaron -
If you give up the optical drive, you can have as much as three hard drives! Your idea of 1xSSD + 1xHDD + 1xBD/DVD will work fine.
-
One quick question. I have the 8760w with Nvidia Quadro 4000m. Is there any way to drive four external displays? I read somewhere that its only possible with Ati cards? Could it be possible with the Nvidia, even with some extra hardware like a docking station?
-
so only one open question is left.
best regards
aaron -
sorry, it's me again.
in a swiss webstore I have read, that the LG671EA is only able to handle one hard disc and a dvd drive, or two harddiscs, but not dvd drive.
is that possible?
best regards
aaron -
You can however get something like the Matrox TripleHead2Go adapter:
Amazon.com: Matrox TripleHead2Go Three-Monitor Graphics Expansion - Digital Edition T2G-D3D-IF: Electronics
There are others out there that are cheaper as well, but remember, these are basically external video cards, so you won't be utilizing the internal Quadro Card anymore. -
I notices some owners here have problem with Turbo Boost. I wonder whether it was fixed in the latest BIOS?

Big hi to you experts, really hope you can help me out!
I want to buy the HP 8760W elitebook with Quadro 3000M, but I'm totally confused about the display that it ships with (I'm based in U.K)...
Does HP8760W with part number: LG671ET#ABU (or LG671EA) come with IPS dreamcolor display or not???
I've checked websites of 9 suppliers, half say it does, half say it doesn't. I read the official HP manual for this laptop and it says the 8760W can be shipped with any one of three different display types (only one of which is IPS).
I even called HP Store in Ireland and they told me they don't know the answer!
I emailed official HP customer support 2 weeks ago about this, but they didn't bother to reply((
Is there anybody out there who has LG671ET#ABU model and can confirm for certain if it has dreamcolor display?.. Thankyou!!! -
according to the two german distris listing it: no dreamcolor
FHD AG LED WVA = Full HD, Antiglare, LED, Wide viewing Angle = no dreamcolor
apart from the fact that it´s too cheap for having a dc display. -
Does anyone know how to enable the 2nd harddrive?
I've put a harddrive in it, but Windows doesn't recognize it.
Perhaps a setting in the BIOS? -
did you activate it in Disk Management and assigned it a drive letter?
-
Hello all,
A nice new (Ish) 8760w arrived at my desk today and I set about fitting a Crucial 128Gb M4 SSD and 32Gb ram. The keyboard was extra simple to remove and the ram went in with zero fuss. A cage is on the way to fit another M4 and I've also grabbed myself an ST09 extended battery. (Might grab the BB09 later if required).
Although the auction stated dreamcolor it wasn't (Grrr) but the price was fine. i7-263QM with the 3000m.
Just clean installed, chipset driver installed, Framework, then the other drivers from HP. (3000m from nVidia)
I've got the following services disabled:
It's... most certainly the fastest laptop I've ever owned -
Really, the fan turns off ?? Maybe I should those settings on mine, it's pretty quiet, but I would like to have it silent if possible...
-
I have a problem. It is with my sound. When playing music or watching a video, the sound will "drag" for a few seconds.
-
-
Ahh ok, I prefer not to touch any services, my machine works perfectly, definately the best laptop I have ever had.
-
hi
The pinkish colour on the screen , how did you resolve it please?
