I just ran the new Unigine Valley Benchmark. You can download it for various operating systems from "http://unigine.com/products/valley/download/". The benchmark moves through a mountain terrain and renders all objects with incredible detail. It's a really good workout for the graphics card. I ran it on my 8760w with an i7-2920XM and a 5010M card. The result shows 18.9 FPS average (see attached screenshot of results). Since I am running Linux on my 8760w, I would be interested how my numbers compare with a Windows operating system. If you have some time and would like to watch a beautiful mountain terrain, please run this benchmark and post the result.

    cheers,
    Werner

That's an impressive number, but it is important to know the configuration. Here are my benchmarks with different configs:

    resolution / quality / framerate / score
    640x480 / Low / 54.7 / 2291
    640x480 / Ultra / 32.8 / 1373
    1280x720 / Low / 34.9 / 1462
    1280x720 / Ultra / 22.6 / 945
    1920x1080 / Low / 26.5 / 1108
    1920x1080 / Ultra / 14.7 / 615

Could you please post your config?

Hi! Could you tell me the serial number of Color mapping board (on photo2) and numbers of cables?
I would like to upgrade my HP 8770w book, but I don't know what parts I need!

    Thank you!

Can anyone tell me the model number LG660EA has a Dreamcolor screen? All I know is that it definitely has a 1080P display. Even went on partsurfer, but they don't carry any screens for this SKU.

Well, my 8760w Dreamcolor unit had the issue a lot of people have...pinkish/reddish hue on left and bluish hue on right on a white screen. debated for two weeks whether to call HP and have them replce it with the chance that I would get a worse screen than I had...well HP Tech came out to my office and replaced the display (for the Dreamcolor, they replace the entire display portion of the nuit, not the display panel. Could not tell if the replacement was a refurb or not. It looked new and had a bag with made in China on it, showed a package/build date on box of 6/17/13 which would lead one to believe it was new but who knows. Anyway, new screen has no dead pixels, that i can see anyway, and its still a little bluish on the righ side but the white backgronud is a lot more uniform than the other one and much less red on the left side. There is still a slight imbalance on white, but is much more liveable now, with the mostly bluish hue all the way across the screen (i like bluish whites, they look cleaner to me.) Anyway I opted for the onsite tech repair because I figured that I could get instant feedback with the tech on how the new screen looked. So I will be keeping this one for now...since I have 3 years left and didnt have her close the case yet. The new screen (as well as the old one) just has what HP considers "normal" with the slight red spot in the lower left corner and the slight blue spot in the lower right corner. Those I can live with as long as the bulk of the display is uniform. It is sad though that with what this screen costs as an option that it isnt more perfect than it is. But I guess the main problem is the use of the RGB backlight instead of white LEDs. Obviously it would be uniform with all white LEDs.

On another note, it was strange that the unit came with 8GB RAM...but one of the 4GB sticks was in the slots below the keyboard and one was in the slots below the bottom cover. I thought this was ridiculous for the factory to do that, since those would typically be the easier upgrade slots. Anyway, I had her move the one stick to the other slot below the keyboard so both explansion slots are open and I will be able to install the other two 4GB sticks I have coming easier.

Well this thread is obviously dead as a doornail now, but if there are any 8760w owners left, here is a tidbit of information for you that I posetd in my other thread about the 8760w and the new USB 3.0 docking stations....the 8760w does NOT PROVIDE USB 3.0 support and the USB 3.0 ports on the dock will only work at USB 2.0 levels, and if you do connect a USB 3.0 device to them you will constantly get the annoying "this device would run faster if connected to a super speed usb 3.0 port" message from windows. Here it is if anyone cares. you can read about my adventuare in my other thread:

Hi everyone! Hopefully there are still some active people on here to give advice....

    I've been offered an 8760w i7 (2640M) 2.8Ghz 320GB with docking 230W for £500. Brand new unopened. Old stock.

I want to purchase this as I would be using it as a replacement for my every day desktop which is 5 years old. I will be upgrading the memory 4GB>16GB and HDD 320GB +2nd 1TB. I will be using it for various things from web browsing, streaming media player, some rendering and maybe creating a little music using various music related software.

Could you please advise me if it is worth me taking him up on his offer? I think it would probably suffice but not 100% sure if it's worth buying a standard up-to-date spec laptop?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I have my 8760w now for two years. You can check my configuration in the very first posting to this thread. Considering that I paid over $4.500.- and you can get this for less than $800.- .... I think it's a bargain. I like my 8760w a lot and I have no intention to replace it any time soon. I have upgarded it to 32GiB memory, 512GiB SSD disk and a 2TB 2nd disk. The system is very fast and reliable. I like especially the vibrant colors of the dreamcolor display and the performance of the graphic card. To have the option to run eight processes concurrently is also pretty good.

I recently supplemented the 8760w with an ultrabook (Dell XPS 13 Developer Edititon). The reasons for this: the ultrabook is lighter than just the powersupply of the 8760w, and the battery lasts over five hours (versus 2 on the 8260w). And 13 inches is a lot easier to handle in the tight space of coach class than 17 inches.

    cheers,
    Werner

I manage all things IT for two different small businesses- one runs all HP, one runs all Dell. If you have the 3 year NBD onsite support, HP can't be beat. Dell has the same warranty, but I've had them take 3 days to get here, while HP has never been late. On a secondary note- the HP computers have had about a 25% failure rate (warranty repair needed) over the course of the last 7 years / 2 buying cycles. The Dells have had a 100% failure rate in the same time frame- every single Dell I've purchased has needed a warranty repair- and at least 50% have needed more than one.

Just my experience running two shops on two different brands. And it's why I bought myself an 8760w- I've had it over 2 years now- still love it.

Ok- so I picked up an Intel 7260 ac wifi card for the 8760w to take advantage of my new AC routers. I know of the HP bios whitelists from past experience, but I figured what the hell, I'll gamble. Turns out the card is not accepted per the bios whitelist, and thus the laptop boots with the wifi card disabled. Anybody have information on removing the whitelist? I can't find a modded bios for the 8760 anywhere.

You could try to make a mod by the default way for HP laptops - via editing binary code of the BIOS with hex editor. You could find many guides over the internet.

A whitelist will prevent you from booting. If you are in Windows, whitelist is out of the question. If the card is disabled(driver cannot start) in Windows, that is the problem card branding. Sandy gen hp need hp branded intel card. The card may work in Linux.

Hp bios are rsa signed, and workstation bios is locked down like...

It's a very sad truth... Why they couldn't make a real workstation with freedom of upgrade capabilities?

P.S. Even support of integrated Intel graphics would be great... May be we could start a petition?)

Nope- it's visible, but set to disabled in the BIOS. And the Bios won't let me enable it. I can boot to Windows fine, but the card doesn't show up at all. I called HP- they all but laughed at me and basically told me to get a new laptop.....for faster wifi speeds? Really?

I'll try a Linux jump drive like Knoppix or Ubuntu and see what happens....

Honestly, I think someone should start a petition. Locking down the bios from newer intel WiFi cards is assinine. My laptop came with the Ultimate N 6300- why can't I jump up to the new version? This is ridiculous.....

By the way HP said the reason is that they are specifically engineered for the cards they come with and none other.....really? It's specifically engineered to support one intel card, but not another (of the exact same format)? They need to leave that choice up to their consumers. I guess my next laptop will be a Clevo or something of the like......

Does anybody have a prototype or beta bios for this laptop?

I have one that was working perfectly fine. Stupid me decided to run HP Support Assistant and update everything.
Now they keyboard and trackpad are very slow and do not work most of the time. USB KB/Mouse do.

I tried to go back to different bioses (another stupid mistake) but no luck. I should of rollled back to the previous but
figured out how to do it after it was too late.

Once again, this is a prototype laptop and most likely needs the same bios.

If not I guess I'll be selling it for parts.

Has anyone else had an issue with an i7-2820QM & the notebook failing to reboot?

I just replaced my i7-2630QM with an i7-2820QM QS from eBay [ Intel Sandy Bridge i7 2820QM 2 30GHz Turbo 3 40GHz QS CPU Free UPS DHL Service | eBay ] and it starts up and runs okay; but if there is a reboot the notebook fails to start-up again...
I get 3x CAPS & NUM lock flashes, indicating a memory issue -- I've removed all the RAM and used 1 stick in different slots, but the issue persists.
I put my i7-2630QM CPU back in, and the issue goes away.

I've reseated the i7-2820QM CPU 4 times already, and still have the issue.
The system tests all pass too...

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

A partially agree with you but you also have to remember that this is a workstation where stability and tested hardware is more important than the highest performance. I can see why they lock down the BIOS since people would have all kinds of problems when trying to run incompatible devices/untested devices (BSOD's etc.) and would blame HP again. So it's a loose/loose situation.

Did you trying resetting the BIOS to defaults when you have the new CPU in? Running the latest BIOS? Is the 2820QM supported?

It seems strange that on cold boot it runs just fine but can't when doing a reset.

There is a way around the whitelist lock problem. You can buy a replacement bios chip for your particular laptop programmed with an early version of the bios that isn't completely locked as the current version is (I think any bios prior to F19 but I am not certain of that). After replacement there is a procedure to completely remove the whitelist. If you Google it there is a forum that goes into the ins and outs of this. The only hick up is you have to be willing to unsolder the old chip and solder in the new chip. I would probably put it in a socket for easy replacement of the bios if you mess up . They sell the bios replacement chips on ebay.

Just for anyone interested, recently installed a K5100M into the 8760W, it works just great, the idle and load temperatures on this thing are ridiculous (< 30C and <70 C) compared to the old Fermi I had (45 C and 85 C). A few nvbl.inf hacks are needed to get the 312.33 driver to install, and the default 652044-001 heatsink does the job (although you will need to rearrange the thermal pads with care for the K5100M chips). Will post benchmarks when I get around to it.

I would be really interested how the K5100M performs with the Unigine Valley benchmark. Maybe you get a chance to run this? You can download the benchmark at "http://unigine.com/products/valley/download/".

Also, the best price for the K5100M on eBay is now $1000.- Maybe you can share who the seller was, so that others can check if more K5100M can be made available at that price?

    cheers,

Was it an HP card, or just a "regular" one? (Any idea who manufactured it?)

EDIT: I'm asking simply because I am considering purchasing a K5000M / K5100M for a 8770w, but I am not sure I can find an HP-made card and HP is immensely whitelist-happy.

LATER: There's no subvendor in the GPU-Z screen on ebay...

I read a few posts on NBR re. whitelists not being an issue for the GPUs in the more recent Elitebooks (can't remember the exact post but this included the installation of a Clevo 680M and a K5000M), so I purchased based on that. There are no markings or labels on the card I received that indicate any HP branding. I just installed it and it worked. If it didn't work, I have a Dell machine to install it in, other than that I'd have had to sell it. The seller also informed me that the GPU was tested on a ZBook 17 after purchasing.

I would talk to the vendor/seller on eBay to see if they can guarantee compatibility before purchasing, the reason I wasn't too bothered in this case was due to the cheap price meaning that I could easily resell at little to no loss.

    Merry xmas ;).

    I did it!

Thanks also to this guy who posted about his 680M experience.

Q3000M Fermi -> 675MX Kepler... Swapping the X brackets was a little hell, took 45 minutes to get those brackets off underneath the MXM cards (its used for mounting the heatsink). The person who thought it was a great idea to use super adhesive glue/tape ... I don't know... Not really necessary ppff..

And then the driver.. Luckily there is laptopvideo2go.com and their modified INF file, but still it took a lot of time to get a working driver. However, I'm happy with the end result.

    * Oh and yes I actually underclocked the card here.. Under full load temperature still rises to 80 degrees Celsius on default clocks. My 3000M could even go to the dangerous 90s... Maybe need to clean the radiator units more properly or something, I don't know.. Used Arctic MX4 and heatpads, in my believes properly but well yeah, will look into that later...

    I don't think it will matter much according to this review;

    Some fairly hi-res pictures when I replaced and tested;

Hi there dear 8760w-users, I have a question for you.
I intend to buy a external monitor with a resolution of 3440x1440 (10 bit). Is there anyone who can tell me whether the displayport supports this resolution. And which version the DisplayPort is?

    I have the LG672EA model with a i7 2630QM and Quadro 3000M

At this time there is no way to modify the bios or install any WiFi card not in the white-list without physically installing a new BIOS chip (I'm not going to do that). The good news is, HP did remove the white-list from future laptops. If you had an 8770, instead of an 8760, there would be no white-list to get in the way. We just got lucky enough to have a monster laptop, with a crippling bios.

Hi all. I have recently acquired an elitebook 8760w second hand and it did not come with the recovery discs. Does anybody know where I could find these discs on the internet or perhaps one of you could rip the iso from your disc and post it for me I would truly be grateful.
