Drivers & software for HP EliteBook 8760w Mobile Workstation - HP Support Center
If those HP links work... First is obviously Windows 7 installation images. Get the one you want, use it to install.
Second link is for drivers, if you wish to manually install what you need.
Third one is the automatic downloader/installer for drivers. It is quite handy.

(Reposted from the 8770w owners lounge)
The 8760w and the 8770w is very similar, and should accept the same GPUs.
Does anyone own a Quadro K5100M 8Gb with hardware ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_176C103C&REV_A1
If you do, please do share your vBIOS by making a backup with GPUz or nvflash. I have messed up mine somehow.
Unless I screwed up and mixed up the ROMs, orginally it had vBIOS version 80.04.B0.00.09.
Tried a HP one: 80.04.C4.00.06 in which resulted in no picture at POST/boot until the drivers in Windows/Linux get the card running.
Also a Dell vBIOS version: 80.04.C9.00.02, same problems. I have also started to experience occasional micro stuttering, which I believe is caused by the firmware.
I get an error now from nVIDIA Mosaic as well saying that it cannot enable the feature due to firmware problems even after reverting back to original. (or so I hope it was the original, reflashed 5 AM in the morning intoxicated)
Attempted reflashing, with different parameters if it did not overwrite parts properly. Using the latest nvflash in Windows 7 I could find, 5.163. and "nvflash -4 -5 -6 filename.rom" attempted adding -j as well, as it supposedly "allows flashing a corrupted or erased EEPROM".
Any ideas what I am doing wrong here lad(ette)s? Any parameters with nvflash I could add that might do a better job of flashing the firmware onto the EEPROM? Nvflash says I have "PCI Subsystem ID (103C.176C)." reversed to the above.
If you do have a K5100M, please make a backup of your vBIOS and post, would really appreciate that.
Switched over from UEFI mode to legacy boot mode yesterday and noticed improvement with the Mosaic working, but if I try to combine a external monitor connected through DP with the internal one it says its probably not working because of firmware issues.
Any ideas? Soon pulling the card and putting back the AMD M4000 to rule out any problems with the motherboard, since that was replaced twice after I found the previous replacement was a repaired board that still had a ton of solder residue and flux around the repaired/reseated docking connector, which caused havok. -
Hello Friends.
Can anyone halp me with vBIOS or "*.rom" file?
I need to change card vendor with quadro 4000m because with Dell it will not even boot up.
I've spent couple of days searching the Web for file, but I only found Dell's... -
If so, I have it:
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?res...07&authkey=!ALWOT7Onn0PTVTM&ithint=folder,rom
There's the .rom file and a zip folder containing the same .rom file just in case.
How do you plan on flashing it? The only tool I've seen that claims it supports the 4000m is Svet's VBIOS Tuner, but I did not get a chance to try it.
Please post an update on your progress -
. Thank you very much!
Yes, that was exactly what i needed. I will post everything in about a month, because then new heatsink will come to me. I booted it up with old one, I used a dremel to make it right, but I need a better connection, and heat dissipation.
I thought I will use nvflash to put new rom file into it. I need to do it on black screen, because of whitelist for HP. -
Good luck with the project! -
Because I've been browsing this thread and it seems that cards from Dell and any Fermi/Kepler HP cards should work without any mods. Maybe it's a matter of BIOS revision?
I also need to replace my Quadro 4000m (and most likely the system board), so I'm researching options while HP takes their time replying (it's the holidays, what can you do).

I would love to replace the 8560w's standard Firepro M5950 with an M8900 ( I'm stuck with firepro because I do a lot of CAD) .
Would I have to make similar changes to any AMD driver files as you described?
Am I missing anything here to think I could make a type B card to work in the 8560w? That would be a huge boon to be able to use not just type 'a' mxm 3.0 connection cards but all the higher-spec type 'b' cards that are out there. -
That is a interesting thought and experiment.
HP had used half height card on the 17, so I guess it comes down to vbios compatibility? Also PSU, but 150w/160 for HP? is doable. -
That is a interesting thought and experiment.
HP had used half height card on the 17, so I guess it comes down to vbios compatibility and power output. also get the 17" full height heat sink and thermal pad to cover the vrm(important). some suggest the heat sink would be too thick? I have no idea about the thickness though ~~ as I just pull info from other's discussion.
Eurocom Release
a is rated 55w
b is rated 100w
the actual power does have wiggle room as people had oc card to draw more than 100w.
Also PSU, but 150w/160 for HP? is doable.
8760w with m8900 have problem with fan control. -
Interesting note about the power supply. And for the fan, I wonder if just using arctic thermal grease would help?
-
Forgot something critical, the heat sink, the 17" shouldn't fit (not align with vent)and 15" may not fit back on if you use 3.0b card. That would be the first problem.
-
It looks like the two cards are nearly perfectly aligned (holes gpu placement) everywhere except the extension on the end.
View attachment 119250
View attachment 119251
Since the 17 and 15 both use the same smaller type 'a' ATI card to begin, it seems that both the 15 and 17 " heatsink would attach the same way to either type of card (a or b). -
I've already posted in the 8560w thread, but I'll post some here as well. My 8740w has fan control issues with M8900/6970m as well. The more powerful adapter from any 17" EliteBook should work. In fact the Alienware M18x's 330W PSU works and charges the battery just fine in my 8740w (that's if I ever get to that much consumption). As baii suggested the 8760's heat-sink wont fit in the 8560 and you DO NEED (reads - MUST) the extra cooling. Using the leftover space of the DVD bay for cooling modification is a must in my book. Also, you DO NEED to cool the VRM (the extra part on the MXM-B) or you'll fry your GPU in no time. Good luck! You might want to make a separate topic, so we can discuss it in one place and it wont be messed with other stuff form the Owner's Lounges
-
I created a new thread here, to continue this discussion on GPU MX3.0b upgrades for the 8560w. Thanks for all of your input!

What is up everyone, I could use some advice
.
So my 8760w failed one good day before Christmas by simply shutting down. Apparently, some sort of short circuit occurred on the graphics board, because it would trip the power supply's protection and the laptop would power up as usual without the GPU card (no video output, of course).
The only visible damage was this component (a transistor, afaik), which had a bump and smelled burnt:
I was supposed to send it in for repairs today, so I reassembled it and was getting ready to pack it. Lo and behold, the damn thing powers up and works like nothing happened.
I ran a few minutes of Prime95 and GPUTool's stability test, everything seems to be fine.
I opened up the laptop again to inspect it and there is now *more* damage inside. Another component on the board has seriously overheated and is probably dead, AND there's a burnt capacitor on the video card.
I suspect that the capacitor was the reason for the initial problem (short circuit), and after leaving the laptop with the battery in, it burned out and now the system board can function. But I'm not sure.
The problem, if you can call it that, is that the laptop now works fine and has already passed 1 hour of Prime95 + GPUTool stress testing, still going strong.
Any advice on what I should do?
Do I try to send it to HP anyway (while I have the warranty - I don't think they'll accept it, though), stress test it some more, sell it or just wait for it to fail again (if ever)?
Anyone have any idea what those two components do and whether the GPU will be OK with 3 out of 4 capacitors?
This laptop is one of the most unluckiest purchases I've ever made so far, should've just gone with a Dell Precision.
Thanks in advance! -
Stop whatever you are doing and send it for repair immediately. If it's not too late, only couple of SMD components would be replaced. Otherwise - burned motherboard and you'll have to buy a new one.
-
Well, HP just said that "Everything is Awesome! and I should not send it back to them, they'll close the support case. I've told them about the damage, but that is apparently no problem as long as the laptop works.
Regardless, I bought a system board and a video card to have as spares - that way it's 1 hour and the laptop is back in business. The Quadro 4000m is very nice, though, I'd rather it not fail.
Just FYI, the 8760w's RAM is limited to 1333 MHz - anything faster will downclock. I bought 2x8GB 1600 MHz modules and they run at 1333 MHz, I've also got Thaiphoon Burner and I can not get any of the modules to go past that. Too bad HP always does this kind of kwap. Hey, at least Turbo Boost is working
I also can't get the damn Validity fingerprint reader to work for Windows logon - it works after logging in using HP's Protect Tools, but I don't really use it for anything other than logging in, lol. Does anyone have it working properly, maybe without Protect Tools? -
That sucks, it is obviously a failure! When getting spares, why didn't you got something fancier than 4000m, or it suits you just fine?
That's how the RAM goes, it usually is better to get higher rated RAM, because when it downclocks it runs at pretty descent timings. There's the possibility of incompatibility of course, but one has to take his/her chances. Yeah, HP's are REALLY locked down, and you can't flash modified BIOS on top of that. In the end of the day it only gives that much difference. It's nice in benchmarks where you can see a bit higher number, but there isn't really that much of a difference between 1333 and 1866 for example in real-world usage.
As far as 8740w goes it slows the boot time quite a lot (according to a user, haven't tested it myself, have tons of other kwap that loads, so I'll go without this one), but it was possible to use it for Log-In, don't know why it's not working for you. -
I know, I was ready to pack the laptop for a return (already got the box) and it turned on again and just won't die now, it's pretty weird
.
I got this slightly used 8760w with a 4000m because it was the most powerful machine for the price - I'm not going to spend half its price on a newer card. 32 GB of RAM is the only upgrade I've made myself. I actually got an FX 3800M for cheap purely as a backup.
The RAM speed limit really bummed me out, I was hoping to get the most out of it. I've seen many people complaining about the fingerprint sensor, seems that it doesn't integrate well with Windows 7.
Thanks for the advice, I hope it either works without issues or fails within the warranty period, so I can get it repaired for free and keep my spare board. -
Dear HP Elitebook workstation users. I am looking at this used workstation
HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation 8570w - 15.6" - Core i5 3360M 2.80GHz - Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - 16 GB RAM - 128 SSD + 1TB Cadiverbau, günstig kaufen und gratis inserieren auf willhaben.at!
Can I upgrade GPU on this workstation and what is the highest GPU I can place inside without doing any big hardware modifications.
What about CPU?
I have a MacBook pro late 2011 i7 / 16 gig ram / AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB and could do a trade with this guy? Is it worth it ?
Thanks. -
Ok- so after owning this thing for over 3 years and being beyond warranty I was trying to decide if I should upgrade or replace this laptop. Looking at the new zBook 17 G2, I was hesitant to commit to a $5800 price tag (without the CTO discounts) after looking at upgrade parts for the 8760. I thought, since an 8770 system board was relatively cheap, maybe I could spend a LOT less and have something comparable. I did just that.
Here's the breakdown:
Required parts to convert an 8760 to an 8770:
The 8770 motherboard 688746-001 6050A2479201
The 8770 USB 3.0 board 6050A2479601
The 8770 Top cover & touchpad (the touchpad has a different Ziff cable connection on the 8770) 652536-001 6050A2479401
The 8770w Card Reader Board w/cable 6050A2479501
An 8770 compliant processor- I went with the i7 3940xm (new Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound needed for installation- I was able to re-use my existing heat-sinks)
Optional Video card update:
I installed the K5000m
I shopped all over the internet and was able to buy all new parts, and stay under $1400 for all of this. The 8770 board bios does not white-list like the 8760, so I was also able to finally upgrade to the intel 7260ac card. It takes just a couple hours to swap all the parts out. It would be cheaper if you could find a parts 8770- perhaps one with a broken screen.
This might not be worth the hassle for most people, but I had fun doing it and thought I would share the outcome so others will know what it takes to do this. I like this form factor, and my upgrade parts are well on par with the current zBook offering (even memory speed is the same 1600MHz), so I'm happy.Last edited: Jan 27, 2015jobriennbr and triturbo like this. -
Is it worth the trade? No idea. If you want to move to Win, then yes. The Elitebooks are strong and sturdy and reliable. If moving to Win is not the main goal, then probably not worth it, but still not a bad move. -
Are consumer card supported on the 8760w? If not, what's the most powerful pro card that can be installed on it?
-
Whats the best possible Upgrade for an 8760w?
I just read all the Upgrade reports, but i didnt find information, what are the best possible options?
xs850g helped a lot with this:
Required parts to convert an 8760 to an 8770:

but what do i need for an upgrade of the gpu?
i would like to install the nvidia k5100m, what do i need for it? new heatsink, new power-cable? is it possible to install it?
thank you for your help -
Hello.
There is no way to make eDrive work with Bitlocker on this laptop, right?
Also, the Crucial mx100 appears to be capped to sata 3gbps speeds, despite sata 6gbps being set in the BIOS. Is there something I'm missing? -
Wth, problem solved by setting max sata speed to 3gbps instead of 6gbps...

Can anyone confirm whether the 2920xm can be overclocked using Throttlestop or Intel XTU on the 8760w/8560w?
I'm thinking of upgrading, but there's no point if HP locked the Turbo limits in the BIOS. In that case, the 2960xm at stock settings is the highest performance you can get on this laptop...
Thanks! -
ThrottleStop works fine for my 8740w and 920XM. Intel's XTU is of no use at all. Even if you have XMP RAM, there's no extra menu for tweaking the RAM timings and the CPU "overclocking" is not even funny (hence the quotes). The BIOS is REAAAALLY restricted on those machines (XTU depends on the BIOS settings). Of course it would be best an owner with an extreme to share his/hers experience, but I'm posting it just in case no one shows-up
Happy upgrading!
-
Hi triturbo, thanks for the reply!
That is good news, I hope they didn't restrict the BIOS any further in the 8760w... -
Hi Jobriennbr,
i'm planning the same upgrade as you did (from Quadro 4000m to gtx680). Can i contact you on your priv email?
[email protected]
many thx in advance for your reply. -
It really annoys me because I want to undervolt the CPU to decrease the temperatures a little (which are around 45°C in idle). On the 8710w I was able to drop the temps to 30°C with a paste change and a good undervolt, and I'd love to do it again on this one. -
Not sure if there's undervolt for 2nd (as well as 1st and 3rd) gen i7s, I think it only works for Haswell/4th gen. How about overclocking, does it work?
-
-
Really?! That's a bummer! Write to @unclewebb maybe he can do something about it. I really can't believe 8760w is even more locked than 8740w (which is pretty locked)!
-
Hi elevul, thanks for the reply!
So overclocking the extreme CPU's is not possible - that really sucks... -
-
As for BIOS locks- that was the reason I started my search for upgrading to an 8770 motherboard. It isn't locked down like the 8760, so upgrades are actually easy. It was either get a new system, or upgrade, and the upgrade was way less expensive!
-
There is no simple way to under volt the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Gen Core i CPUs.
Robbo99999, elevul and triturbo like this. -
So, I read it right then, no undervolt for us
What about overclocking? Is it possible that it is blocked in the BIOS? I mean not only not present, as it is with my Acer 5920G as well as my 8740w (ThrottleStop works), but blocked as no-way-to-work-around (ThrottleStop doesn't work), like it seems to be the case here?
-
do you think that 8760w but will gtx 880m will need also only nvidia driver inf mod and that's all ?
anyway great job !
*I feel like this score should be higher but I can't justify why yet other than the 3DMark06 benchmark being too outdated for Intel Sandy Bridge/NVIDIA Kepler architectures. I know the GTX 680M(mobile) vs regular GTX 680 does thottle down and up. CPU score was low too. Max temps imply room to safely overclock.

So, I just bought a moderately used 8760w from a reseller, and I immediately had a problem after installing W7 ULT 64bit.
Some of the keys in the left upper quadrant of the keyboard stopped working for some reason(Q, A, 1 and §) and then fixed themselves a good few minutes later(Windows got reinstalled in the mean time, at first they didn't work on the reinstall either), however, I am worried of this happening again(because I read a thread about this somewhere but can't seem to find it anymore) and now I am asking if anyone else has had similar problems?
Specs:
Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor (2.00 GHz[Up to 2.90 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology], 6 MB L3 cache, 4 cores/8 threads)
NVIDIA Quadro 3000M with 2 GB dedicated GDDR5
1920x1080 16:9 @ 17.3" anti-gloss
8GB RAM DDR3
500GB HDD 7200rpm
I've got most drivers, I don't download drivers that I don't need(eg. Smart card readers, HDMI, etc.).
So, uh, anyone? -
Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version and install the latest Synaptics drivers for the touchpad (LuxPad).
I also have issues with the keyboard (key presses just don't register) very randomly. It works perfectly when I use it extensively (like for coding, writing or gaming), the problem mostly manifests after leaving the laptop idle/unattended for an hour or more. Pretty weird.
I've read several threads with similar problems, keys getting stuck, not being recognized, so far it seems to be something to do with the keyboard controller. HP supposedly fixed this in the latest BIOSes. -
Oh, and hello again! -
After using the HP 8760w for 4,5 years now I realize that it was an incredible laptop that still is better than 93% of the computers worldwide according to Sandra benchmarks. It was a perfect choice.
-
Has anyone tried connecting a 4k display to the DP1.2 connector on the laptop?
-
Hi, I'm thinking of picking up a used HP 8760W to be used for photo editing. This will be a non dreamcolor screen and I was wondering what are the user feedback for the standard screen type for photo editing usage. I have been using a budget laptop and been disappointed with the image displayed (color, contrast, viewing angles) so hope the standard 8760W screen will be an upgrade.
-
The colors are great, the pixel pitch is good compared to other FHD screens (you can't see the lines/space between the pixels, on some screens it's horribly visible) and the viewing angles are surprisingly good.
It is bright as hell imo (a good thing, you can adjust the brightness), and you may want to run the standard Windows calibration to adjust the color balance and reduce the blue tint (I don't know if it's just my panel). -
@jotm - Can you tell me the stock panel's model/tag?
@David Soong - I think DELL M6600's standard (not PremierColor/RGB LED) panel is 72% (LP173WF1). I know there is such panel option, but not very sure if standard, that's why I said "I think". You might want to look into that.Last edited: Jun 6, 2015
