Not too sure about that, given that the previous machine can use it.

Will a express card egpu work on the Hp Elitebook 8760w? I have a firepro M5950 right now. I was planning on getting a gtx 970 or 980
-
Just FYI, don't upgrade the BIOS past F60 (to F62 or F64) if you like it running cool, unless of course you need the "UEFI improvements" HP made.
They locked the maximum fan speed to something quite a bit lower than maximum, so heat is now an even bigger problem than it was with the 2960xm and whatever high power video card you can install.
But hey, at least it's quiet :/ -
Basically, all NVIDIA GPUs Kepler and before work without a hitch, while maxwell works with some difficulty, and pascal doesnt (At least on the M6600) work due to a lack of eDP, and all AMD MXM GPUs work without a hitch as long as they're within the power envelope. -
-
Will I be able to use the internal display, or will I have to use a external monitor? I might go with a mxm upgrade instead cause it's a more freezable soultion for traveling.

In case anyone is still looking for a decent condition 8760w, and if you happened to locate at Toronto, I am selling mine on Kijiji. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1284109042
This one has a monitor upgrade with AUO149D panel. This panel should be the next best thing to HP's DC panel. -
Hi Guys/Gals,
I am new here. I just picked up an 8760w for a great price. It's a lot more computer than I'm used to! It'll definitely handle my daily needs, but there are a couple of RTS games I'd like to pick up.
I have the i7 2620 2.7 GHZ processor and the Nvidia 3000M graphics card. Can these be upgraded? If so, to what? What else is upgrade-able? I understand I can't go to a quad core processor without changing the motherboard.
Thanks in advance for your help!! -

If you are running a modded vBIOS, it is likely operating that way by the vBIOS mod design. Your gpu life span will vary.
At 89C, 70% GPU, if you are not getting the performance or FPS you are expecting by using internet comparisons, you could have a problem in a number of areas. You would also need to compare your GPU clock speeds at 89C/70%gpu, to see if they are comparable. Your heat transfer paste on your GPU and pads on gpu board chips are possibly insufficient or not sized or positioned correctly for good heatsink contact, or heatsink plate under-torqued down.
If your clock speeds and performance are lower than would be expected for 89C/70%, it could be caused by a number of things. Laptop gpu fan not scaling up with GPU temp, or fan never spinning up to full speed (this is a known possible issue). You need to also verify that if your modded GPU BIOS is using GPU boost and overclocked too high, it is possibly exceeding your cooling capacity, and maybe that vBIOS was tested on a laptop with a slightly different heatsink (Dell, Clevo, vs HP), even though it theoretically is a designed to dissipate a set amount of heat energy. None of these various laptops rated with a 100W heatsink, dissipates EXACTLY 100W, and I have yet to see a vBIOS modder take that into account. They test on THEIR manufacturer laptop (e.g. Dell), and hopefully, their vBIOS mod runs for the long term on your HP designed "100W" gpu heatsink.
On my 680M implementation, at 99% GPU, my GPU temp will max out at 73C. But...my GPU will throttle down to keep GPU temps going no higher than 73C.
I do understand this kind of GPU throttling is not for everyone, but if the 680M board fails, it is not as easy as a desktop PC to put a new one in.
Also, my GPU fan speed scales up with GPU temps (yes, I am running latest motherboard BIOS).
Attached is a screenshot I just did of GPU Shark monitoring of a benchmark app running. My machine was connected to dual DisplayPort monitors at the time, so FPS specifics would not be comparable. Also, I am sure my fan and heatsink are dusty and need to be blown out.
For a credible high performance modded 680M vBIOS, search internet for user " svl7" and 680M. For a more conservative (Increased Mean Time Between gpu Failure) performance enhanced vBIOS mod of 680M, search on user " widezu69".Attached Files:

So I can upgrade the processor from my i7 2620 to the i7 2960xm, it's just plug and play?
The video board from the Nvidia 3000m to the 680m, that's just plug and play too?
my power supply is the HP oem, but it shows only 200w output.
I only have 2 slots for RAM and I am currently at 8G. The crucial site states the max i can go is 32GB, is that true?
Where would I be better off starting my upgrades, the processor? -
The maximum amount of ram that you can install in a HP Elitebook 8760w with the 2 ram slots is 16 Gb, Which is plenty enough.
The GTX 680M isn't just plug and play, You have to modify the GPU drivers until you can be able to actually use it in windows.
As for the 2960qm Yes, That's a plug and play CPU, Just be sure you have the dual heatpipe heatsink before you do so. -
There is actually two different motherboards (okay, probably more than just two, but...), one for dualcore and one for quadcores.
Quadcore motherboards support 4 dimm slots (4x8GB = 32GB max) while dualcores have only two slots, since that's how many dimms the processors would support.
I'm used to see i5 CPUs as dualcore systems, so I recommend you to check if there is actually two dimm slots under the keyboard in addition to the normal two under the bottom cover.
This is only a faint memory but I remember seeing someone mention that the quadcore/i7 motherboard would have different/better power supply to the cpu. In addition I suggest to look for posts where others have or tried to upgrade CPU from i5 to i7 on a dualcore motherboard... I'm not sure if all of them were success stories.
Checking and re-checking doesn't cost anything when you do it before you order any parts -
Hello, new here, trying to do some research on upgrading the GPU in my 8770w (currently K4000M). I have read that the GTX 980m and K5100m are the top dogs that will work in this machine, is that correct? My question comes to which particular version needs to be bought that's plug and play compatible, I see them listed multiple ways on eBay etc and unsure of which one I should buy. Thanks in advance for any help.

Joining the owners club, just picked up a used 8760w in mint shape for 200 bucks:
i7 2630MQ
Quadro 3000M
8GB RAM
FHD non-Dreamcolor display
I plan on upgrading this machine as far as I can and dual booting Windows and Mac OSTenGauge likes this. -
I can pick up a cheap M2000M locally. Will it fit the 8760w?
-
Hello,
I have problem with 8760w (i7 2670QM, 24GB RAM, Quadro 4000M, 2GB HDD)
Sometimes, it just shuts down and restarts. No warning, no BSoD, just power off and restart. In Event viewer it is stated as Critical: Kernel power.
I already had this kind of error previously, however, changing original Quadro 3000M for actual 4000M helped for few months (3000M was apparently dead as there were stripes on the display)
Could this be caused by overheating?
Now, with just Firefox, Thunderbird and Word open, temperatures are:
CPU 49-54 C
GPU 67 C
GPU VRM 116 C
Especially that VRM seems to be quite high to me....
Any suggestions are appreciated -
Has anyone installed a 8770w board in a 8760w chassis? I'd like to upgrade to Ivy Bridge, as I already have a Quadro M2000M on the way. Is it possible? The chassis seems identical from the 60w to 70w
-
I upgraded 4000m to 780m. But i don't know how to install driver for it. Anyone help me ?
-
-
So, the information is already in this forum. Good luck -
I just ordered a GTX 770m 3Gb with thermal pads, thermal paste and the HP 100 W Thermal Solution found in the 8770w, I got the 8770w one cause they were the same, But the fan in the 8770w seems to be a bit more better vs the 8760w fan (As seen in pictures), If anyone needs I will give them a modified driver, But support ends after I get a GTX 980m later on. Also, I will also have to figure out to see if the modified inf file works first too.
-
Hello everyone, Today I installed my GTX 770m 3Gb that I got off of ebay, It shows as it's a Dell BIOS in the back side but when I install it into the laptop it turns on and shows a black screen. It appears to boot into windows, But even when I shine a light on the screen nothing, I did try to hook it upto the external monitor via vga, However it still don't work. I didn't try the external display port though.
-
An update for the GTX 770m. I discovered that in order to use the GTX 770m in the HP Elitebook 8760w you have to flash a clevo bios on the video card.
-
Just swapped the 2630QM for a 2670QM that I got for 30 bucks. Machine gained about 60 points in Cinebench. Swap was painless and the machine booted right back up, not even a BIOS reset.

Hi, i have bought an old 8760w (2820qm) and i would like to upgrade ram with ddr3 1866 but i've tried corsair and crucial 8Gb memory modules and memory still run @1333mhz. Is there something to tweak in bios (f.64) to have it work @1866 ? same problem with 1600mhz ddr3 (tried a lot of brand), still runing @1333... thanks for your help (i'm french so sorry for my poor english)
-
So I managed to get all this working. New keyboard was the solution.
Question since I got another 8760w in order to mod (these machines are a beauty!) I've found some Dell 780m GPUs online. I understand these need to be flashed with another bios in order to work on the 8760w. Any idea on how to do this?
So basically my question is a Dell GTX 780M compatible with an HP 8760w straight out of the box as a direct replacement? The part number is N14E-GTX-A2.
CheersLast edited: Nov 29, 2017 -
You can only use version 304xx (I'll confirm later and update this as I'm in windows for study stuff). Nothing else after that works with the backlight - no matter what you do.
It does take some finding on the Nvidia site but I'm running Manjaro and once I found where the option was I installed 304 and then de-selected the newer drivers.
Works fine
- On Manjaro you need to go to free nvidia driver (nouveau) and install that.
- Uninstall the nonfree nvidia driver (later than 304xx) video-nvidia-340xx (on mine)
- Uninstall the video-nvidia
- Install video-nvidia-304xx
- Reboot and you should then be into video-nvidia-304xx and your Fn-F9/F10 backlight will work
I found this through trial and error and funnily enough I found a website (since forgotten) that said you can't use past 304.
Good luck!
## PS. Sorry for the delay but for some reason grub corrupted itself on hdd1 and I couldn't reinstall so I had to swap drives around. All working now, wierd. I'll update tomorrowLast edited: Dec 16, 2017 -
Ok, some more questions:
The new acquired 8760w has a very old BIOS. Version F26. I got 4 X 8gb Crucial 1600mhz DDR3L memory sticks which don't seem to be compatible for some reason. I tried using only one stick for testing and the 8760w couldn't boot up.
What's the best BIOS version to upgrade to? Remember some people stating in here not to upgrade past a certain version I believe.
Edit: Updated to F60. Going to check those memory modules again tomorrow.Last edited: Dec 15, 2017 -
It's probably not compatible due to the RAM being DDR3L (L=low power 1.35V RAM) which is not supported. Only 1.5V modules will work.

These are the modules by the way:

Very odd question - for the office 8760W - it seems if I leave a lighter window in a dark background - there is some faint ghosting after about 3-5 mins (where the windows was, if I start moving the background / window content - it goes away). Is there any way of fixing this without replacing the display? It's perfect in colour, etc - just a bit OCD about the display hence asking. Thanks guys.

Hi Guys,
i'm searching the Bios Chip on the Mainboard.
Is it the 8 Pin Chip under the "Docking Station" on the Mainboard ? ( D1013 / U10060 ).
MX1C MX LL25L6406E M21-12G 3F359900 with a red Dot on it.
Need it to replace
Thank you in Advance -
I've read the 8760/8770 dc2 panel are used with dell's m6600/6700 premier color and don't suffer from the green and red color tint in the bottle left and right corner like the 8560/8570 and m4600/4700 nor the grain.
The one thing I've noticed with my previous m6700 with premier color is when looking offer center, images are washed out and don't maintain the excellent viewing angle.
The 15" panel doesn't have this problem and maintains a steady viewing angle.
The dc2 display in the 8740w also doesn't have the viewing angle issue, however, colors are noticeable less saturated than the than the newer dc2 panels. (I have both the 8560w and 8740w side by side)
You can clearly see what I'm talking about here. Pause at 1:01 and 1:07
8740w - viewing angle remains stableAttached Files:

Hey i was wondering if someone could help me.I'm trying to get a gtx970m 6gb working with my 8760w-dc I setup windows in UEFI mode and tried modifying drivers but my screen still turns black when it's installing the driver
-
I was thinking about ordering a Nvidia k1100m 2gb does anybody know if I need to mod drivers for this just looking to increase the performance a little bit I also was looking at the Nvidia m1000m and I guess the same question would apply to that too if I ended up getting that one
-
Hi, I've just jumped into this thread after buying an 8760w today, it has an i7 2630QM, 16GB ram, a quadro 4000m and the DreamColour display.
My question to you is, do I need to modify my drivers in order to use a gtx 970m? someone mentioned earlier that the only issue was the brightness control didn't work if not and was always stuck at 100%. this isn't an issue for me as this is intended to be used as a dedicated gaming laptop and if I need portability and good battery life I can always use one of my 8 thinkpads.
Thanks all,
Balth. -
Hi,
I have a Hp 8760w quad core,16gb memory which came with a quadro 4000m.
From the past few days i was having problems with my laptop, it used to restart automatically. Now, it has got worse, when i switch on my laptop a black screen shows up and nothing happens after that.Hard disk sound and the fan noise can be heard, and some blinks on caps and num keys.I got it checked from my local repair shop and they say that the GPU has gone bad, they tried reballing and heating but that did'nt work too.
Now, it seems that there is no other option left other than to buy a new graphics card for my laptop.
I am here to take your suggestions on possible upgrades to the earlier quadro 4000m.I am getting a 4000m for 110 dollars on ebay but it seems i can get better much options in mxm cards in the same price range. The manual says that this range of laptops came with 3000m,4000m and 5010m options.
Are there any other cards which would fit in without too much trouble? -
Can Anyone help me with my HP Elite 8760W. Currently installed is a HHD 500gb running windows 7 as the primary drive, no secondary drive. I want to replace the primary drive with a 80gb SSD. I have put a fresh instal of windows 10 on this from another machine but once inserted it will not boot? I cant seem to find a fix for this anywhere. Not sure if it has something to do will secure boot which i'm unable to find in the bios. Please help someone.. Thanks
-
To complicate my efforts, the machine had no Hard Drive, Caddy or, of course, Operating System. My plan is to configure it with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, although I do have a Window 7 Pro 64 bit CoA to use, if needed.
Initially I found that the machine was stuck in a Boot Loop, so the 8760w would Boot the moment any Power was applied (via PSU alone, or via Battery alone). Fan would also come on immediately, there was no POST (Power On Self Test) that I could tell, a Black Screen and no VGA signal either, and then it would just Shut Down after 5 Seconds...then would just Boot Loop again, and again, and again, for as long as there was any Power. The Power Button and Keyboard had absolutely no effect.
No LED Flash Codes at all and, to stress, machine could not even get to POST that I could determine.
I did find that the HP RTC (BIOS) Battery was reading 2.80 Volts, when it should be a 3.0 Volt unit, or 3.33 Volts when new, so I did replace that with a brand new unit (reading 3.33 Volts) in case it might be a BIOS/Battery issue.
I also tried to re-Set the BIOS, such as removing all Power, then disconnecting the HP RTC (BIOS) Battery, holding down Power Button to discharge all Capacitors, counting to 10, re-connecting the RTC Battery and encouraging the Machine to re-setting the BIOS but, no joy, it still Boot Looped.
I tried to re-Flash the BIOS with a USB FAT Stick formatted as per HP's instructions (holding down at Boot the Windows Key + B Key, and then the alternative Windows Key + V Key) but, no joy, I could not get to the BIOS Update Screen, and it still happily self-Boot Looped.
I also tried the usual things like trying just one RAM stick in Primary Slot 1 (under Keyboard), and no others, or with all RAM Slots populated, with and without Hard Drive, and all no joy. It still Boot Looped.
Then I went further in, and found the GPU Heat Sink was suspiciously loose! A possible tell tale there being that the 4000M was 2013 whereas all of the other Components were all 2011. So, either a replacement 4000M had popped, or someone had swapped in a duff 4000M to sell it with more faults than were being admitted!
Sure enough, the 2013 4000M was blown, with one small flat black chip at the far right as you look at it from above, had lost its top, with a matching burn mark on the Thermal Toothpaste directly above it. There was a further pin point hot spot that had burned through a white plastic label below.
That looked like a power surge, but I have no way of saying either way.
I ordered a new nVidia Quadro 4000M from China, and paid a little extra for DHL, and that came amazingly quickly.
Whilst waiting for the new 4000M, I managed to find what looked like a good used 8760w MotherBoard on eBay EEC, and ordered that.
In the interim, I set about dismantling the 8760w, and re-tested things as I disconnected Components...eventually I was left with just the Fan and MotherBoard, and it was still Boot Looping, so I'm fairly sure the MotherBoard is also toast. However, I could not see anything obvious from a very close physical inspection, no burn marks, every component was there, no swollen Capacitors, albeit the small White Clip for the SmartCard Reader Unit was missing, as was, surprise, surprise, the Smart Card Reader, Cover and Ribbon Cable.
Conclusion, therefore, at that stage, was I had a blown 4000M and a trashed MotherBoard!
The replacement MotherBoard arrived, and it looked very clean, albeit the attached RTC Battery was flat as a pancake, reading no Volts at all.
I removed the old MotherBoard, and fitted the Replacement, and all went well.
The new 4000M arrived, so I carefully fitted that, having cleaned both the main CPU, both Heat Sinks, and the 4000M GPU with Arctic Silver Cleaner, Surface Prep, and a Lint Free Cloth. I also "tinted" the Heat Sinks with Arctic Silver Thermal Paste, and applied K5-Pro Thermal Toothpaste to the 4000M chips and GPU Heat Sink (supposedly better than Thermal Foam Pads).
I put it all back together and, sadly, it looks like the Replacement MotherBoard is faulty!
This time the Machine behaved altogether better, but is giving me FIVE FLASHES of the combined Caps Lock + Num Lock LEDs, which for a 2011 machine, de-codes as a System Board Failure (AKA MotherBoard)!
Groan!
What happens is at Boot, nothing immediately happens, the Power LED and other LEDs illuminate, the machine seems to do a Self-Test but with a Black Screen, and no VGA Output, then FLASHES the above LEDs FIVE TIMES, then the Fan comes on, stays on, and the machine will sit like that until I depress and hold the Power Button. It then stays off thankfully, so no more Boot Looping.
For reference, for an HP Laptop Built between 2011 and January 2015, the LED Blink Codes are as follows:
1 Flash = CPU
2 Flashes = BIOS Corruption
3 Flashes = Memory
4 Flashes = Graphics
5 Flashes = System Board
6 Flashes = BIOS Authentication
Please see (link to HP Support Site page):
HP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code
The machine will now charge a Main Battery in this state (with both Battery inserted and PSU power), so it's close to coming back to life, but has a little way to go (like 2 hours to remove and fit a further MotherBoard)!
Final conclusion, at this stage, is I have fitted a partially-defective Replacement MotherBoard. I say partially-defective because this one can at least Self-Test when a Boot request comes in from the Power Button, or when Power is first applied.
I can also conclude that both the original MotherBoard and 4000M were blown.
Sadly, if my above experience is anything to go by, you may well need both a new 4000M and also, probably, a (working) Replacement MotherBoard.
I will update later when I have located a GOOD Replacement MotherBoard, or a scruffy working 8760w that I can break for Parts. Piggy bank is empty at the moment, so this may take a while.
My main hope is that the "Dreamcolor" display works, or else I will be finding out all about defective screens as well. Deep joy!
Viking -
From what I can gather, the 8760w is fussy about GPU Cards, with some saying there is an in-built HP White List such that only certain GPU Cards will work, or work well, or work at all with, say, the 10bit "Dreamcolor" Displays.
The short list for an easy ride, is these HP fellers:
647176-001 HP AMD FirePro M5950 XT-GL 1GB GDDR5 (DP 1.2 and Eyefinity Plus support)
647177-001 HP NVIDIA Quadro 3000M, N12E-Q1 2GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory
647178-001 HP NVIDIA Quadro 4000M, N12E-Q3 2GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory
647179-001 HP NVIDIA Quadro 5010M, N12E-Q5 4GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory
Note: the AMD and NVIDIA GPU Heat Sinks are not the same, so you will also need to change the GPU Heat Sink if you were to change to an AMD from an NVIDIA, and vice versa.
Below are the HP Parts for the respective 8760w GPU Heat Sinks:
652544-001 HP Heat Sink for use with NVIDIA graphics subsystem
652543-001 HP Heat Sink for use with ATI graphics subsystem
Also, just to avoid any confusion on Heat Sinks, below are the two CPU Heat Sink Units for the Quad and Dual Core 8760w CPUs, as applicable:
653629-001 HP CPU Heat Sink - for use only with computer models equipped with Quad-Core processors
652542-001 HP CPU Heat Sink - for use only with computer models equipped with Dual-Core processors
Others with more experience of the 8760w may advise what other GPU Cards can be persuaded to work or, rather, how they persuaded the 8760w to work with alternative GPU Cards.
I have yet to establish if my Chinese 4000M actually works, because I have yet to get past the flaky MotherBoard stage!

Secondly, I think Windows 10 is linked to the Hardware, so you may encounter problems moving a drive that has been configured on another machine, say, if it has already been Activated and Microsoft have already linked that Activation to the other machine's hardware.
It could be a Windows 10 thing?

Further to my own 8760w MotherBoard fun, I was day dreaming that I might find a well priced Brand New HP 8760w Quad Core MotherBoard!
Yes, I know, fat chance!
HP in the UK/EEC do still have them, but they are over GBP 320.00 so, way over my budget.
However, as I have yet to find the next MotherBoard (AKA System Board), I think I read in this Thread that if fitting a new one, there is an issue that can arise because a Brand New MotherBoard should come in a virgin state, without Serial Number details.
I think someone mentioned that the new unit needs to be "Branded", which I think just means updating with an HP Serial Number and HP Product Number, which need to be valid or it can all go pear-shaped.
This is particularly tricky if, say, updating an HP 8760w with HP 8770w components, which I am also considering. I note that there are a few well priced 8770w MotherBoards out there in Internetland, but am also aware that to effect that swap, this will also need other Parts such as the LH 8770w USB Board, Keyboard, Palm Rest, CPU etc, and there are issues getting an 8760w "Dreamcolor" display to work when upgraded with 8770w components.
I would love to hear otherwise, so please educate me if I have the wrong end of the stick there.
Anyway, when attempting to "brand" a BRAND NEW MotherBoard, some care is needed because, I gather, this can trigger some issues, and I did read that there is some scope to "brick" the machine unless valid details are entered. I think HP Partners should be able to create a File that can enter the details, or you can download a utility, create a suitable File, and apply that via a Bootable USB or CD/DVD.
This all gets complex, fast, if also mixing 8760w and 8770w components, i.e. which Model of HP Machine does one use, and will it burp if trying to use an 8760w Serial with an 8770w Model plucked at random to sortof match a NEW 8770w MotherBoard?
HP Commodity Tracking (CT) Number
I gather this is all linked to the HP Commodity Tracking (CT) Number, which is what you may have seen on the White Label on 8760w/8770w and other MotherBoards.
This HP link may be of interest (HP Support Site link):
HP System Board Commodity Tracking (CT) Number
Also, the following Blog may also be of interest in terms of how to get hold of a suitable utility to address this if lucky enough to be fitting a New MotherBoard (this is not for an HP 8760w, but if you read the comments, it should work if the correct parameters for your machine are used):
Windows Faults Fixed - How to fix Product Information Not Valid error on HP G62-A19SA
This is primarily for my own benefit should I manage to obtain a NEW MotherBoard.
I won't be holding my breath whilst waiting to find one!
Obviously, if obtaining a pre-used MotherBoard, then the CT details should already have been "branded" to that Board, so your machine should, I would think, just adopt the Serial and Product Code etc of the machine that it came from.

Hi, I'm not sure whether to add to this thread or start a new post but trying to get some help with 2 problems with my 8670w (edit: I meant 8760w) running Win 7 Pro that may be related.
One is that the CAP Locks light flashes 5 times on boot up which indicates a system board error, is there any way of further diagnosing this error?
The second problem is when docked to a HP Advance docking station number HSTNN-I10X the machine spends 12 minutes on the "Starting Windows" screen, USB devices take a few minutes to be recognised. The CAP Locks key still flashes 5 times. Without the dock the machine starts normally, USB devices are detected straight away.
Any one with any ideas as to the issue with it?Last edited: May 12, 2018 -
I assume you mean HP 8760w?
That's the LED Error Code that I am getting with an HP 8760w which, as you say, indicated a System Board/MotherBoard failure.
I have not managed to get around that, but have tried changing the Fan, and also changing the GPU Board for another one, but no change.
I'm still getting the 5x Caps Lock and Num Lock LED flashes at initial Boot, and the machine fails to POST, no Display, and nothing I can do to get past that. Machine will not Boot from USB, the fault is detected at an early stage, and that's that.
Sorry this is not better news at the moment.
VikingBabyBell likes this. -
I should add that the Fan was a problem, moved that with the Heat Sink to an HP 8770w, which went ape, so the Fan was faulty.
Viking -
Thanks for reply. I think mine does the same with the POST and display - tried to schedule a chkdsk on reboot and the display is just a few coloured pixels at top of screen. It did however complete the chkdsk command and go on to boot up as normal.
The fan does seem to be working although at times it goes to a high speed even when laptop is doing nothing.
