Did you change the vbios of your card while you had it?
Does your 8740w come with DC screen?

No change in vBios and no DC screen for me on either laptops. I ran the 780m in the 8740w for a bit and moved it to my 8760w because that is now my main gaming computer.

With 780m I also have no problems at all, but GTX 980m is just no way to be compatible with DC2 screen...

Hello, wonderful NBR forum. I apologize for any obvious missing information as this is my first post (I hope I'm not necroing). I would like to ask for some help.

I recently acquired a Dell 780M, and am trying to install to this (also just received) 8760w in my signature, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Issue: 780M is not recognized by the computer, doesn't even power on.

Symptom: When power is provided to the computer, the power light, charging light, and caps lights all blink on for 1 moment, then the computer seems dead.

    Here are the weird bits:
    - It POSTs on my 87 40w (I am able to flash vbios on there via FreeDOS)
    - It's not the computer, it boots fine with the stock HD 6770 (or whatever FirePro it is, I haven't payed much mind to it)
    - I don't have another 230w PSU to test with at the moment but will get one once I get the new machine running (so I have something for the old one).

    vBIOSes I have tried:
GPU had the TechInferno custom vBios flashed at first. (Don't worry I backed it up)
    This stock Dell one https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/142721/dell-gtx780m-4096-130418
video card currently has this one on it https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/151527/151527
all of them work on the 8740w.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Dell cards are not well accepted by HP 8760w. You should have asked the seller to flash Clevo or MSI vbios before shipping to you.

    Ah. Well that makes sense.

By the way, I am able to flash vBIOS myself, this card does work in the 8740w. Would that be an issue at all? Also I forgot to mention I am using an older version of nvflash because the new one wouldn't run (said it was an issue with DOS, am using FreeDOS from Rufus). Would that also be an issue?

Anyway I just flashed an MSI vBIOS ( https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/141840/msi-gtx780m-4096-130217) but still, it won't take it.
I have also noticed the same behavior occurs if there is no GPU present, is this due to the GPU whitelist?

Also thanks for the fast reply!

There is no whitelist for the GPU on HP 8760w, only for the WiFi cards.
Try to flash Clevo vbios and share how it‘s going.

I had already said, I had flashed the Clevo BIOS, and I also tried the MSI BIOS but still no dice.

I threw in the HD 7970m from my 8740w and that works perfectly fine, absolutely no issues, but I am still trying to get in the 780m as I need 4K support (which 7970m lacks apparently).

It still has the issue where the power light flickers and doesn't boot at all, and like I said it does the same thing when there is no GPU in the slot.

Edit: I am also trying different nvflash command flags, was using -f before but also just did -4 -5 -6 for the Clevo bios again (still nothing).

Edit2: I think I should add, the GPU is being flashed, it's just that the 8760w won't take it.

Edit3: sorry for all edits, but, do you think it would be possible to modify the vbios and change the subsystem ID succesfully? or if that would have any impact at all?

Is there anything special I have to do to install a GTX 980m? Besides editing the .ini file, and flashing a vbios?

Are the people using 4k screens through the laptop displayport or through the dock displayport. I've heard some people have more success with the dock?

    Thanks

Alright, I'm a little bit upset right now. This laptop is being a real PITA.

I threw another $290 at an MSI 970M, and you know what? Same thing as the 780M, power light and caps lock light blink for a moment and laptop acts like it doesn't have power.

It's weird since both the AMD cards I've tried worked and both the NVidia cards don't... I don't know what to say, besides that I'm completely confused. Starting to wonder if I even have an 8760w...

Edit: I had read about UEFI options in the BIOS, is UEFI required to power on the machine with nvidia cards or something? Because I have it disabled IIRC.

I think there is clearly a problem with your particular HP 8760w...
I had GTX 780M and now I have GTX 980M and they both run perfectly fine on my 8760w.
UEFI is of benefit only with Maxwell cards (in your case 970m), but only if/when the laptop boots and bios has accepted/recognized the card which is not your case.
What version of mobo do you have? With two or with four ram slots? i5 or i7 CPU?

    Edit:
    Ok, I saw you signature...
    whats your system bios version?

    I hope your haven’t bought a g-sync version of 970M...

Try to flash your 780M with SVL7 modded vbios, it should make it recognizable on your 8760w:
    http://www.mediafire.com/file/y5zsx976lphybl1/

I had this vbios on mine 780m without any problems on 8760w.

All right... I'm feeling veeery stupid right now. I figured it out this morning:

It was the X bracket on the GPU, part of it covers the VRAM on the underside of the GPU, and was shorting some wiring under the GPU slot. Covered that wiring with electrical tape, reassembled, and presto! It booted the 780m and 970m okay.

of course, the reason both Nvidia's had the issue was because I used the same x bracket, heh.

Thank you for all the help, even through my stupidity.

Anyone have issues with their touchpads? Mine began to act up here and there and now barely or doesn't work at all. Just wondering if there is anything I could do or should I just order a replacement? Anyone have a spare laying around?

    Hi All,

I've got an 8760w with a flashing blue (or turquoise) battery light and it won't turn on. I was sitting at it when it went down (although I wasn't using it at the time) and it just blinked out (I had just resumed from suspend a few minutes earlier, the screen was on and the unit was working). I *think* I heard a little click/pop, but it may have just been the fan cutting out. This color light isn't in the service manual and searching I've seen a couple threads about others encountering it and (at the time) HP just replaced the motherboard, in one case even post warranty.

I've tried pulling the battery and plugging it in, holding down the power button for 30 seconds, leaving it unplugged and without battery overnight, etc. I measured the voltage on the power supply and that seems ok (about 19.6v outside-to-inside barrel. Pin on the power supply is about 19.4v (is this used for signaling?). Any thoughts? The laptop still serves well as it has a decent graphics board and the dream display. I haven't tore the unit down yet to inspect the motherboard for faults. I am reasonably competent in soldering and have fixed things at the board level (eg replacing a failed cap) so I'm not adverse to testing/repairing if it's a somewhat known failure.

    Thanks in advance!

Could be a number of things but the first thing I'd try is unplugging the cmos battery and holding the power button for a good 30-60 seconds. I had issues similar to yours when I got my 8760w and that seemed to do the trick. Also try removing all ram sticks but one and swap them out to see if a bad one is giving you issues.

I'll check the CMOS battery. It never even attempts to power on/boot so I really doubt the RAM will have anything to do with it. I'll try it though along with reseating any accessible connector. Hoping someone else might have actually run into this issue.

    Hello,

my nephew bought replacement card K2100M for his HP 8560W, IIRC originally equiped with K1000M

With new card installed laptop won't post.
Power button is on, vent stops spinning and CapsLock & NumLock light blink every 2 seconds.

According to sticker on K2100M it's HP part 734277-001.

I assume he got "wrong" card, that should not be from HP.

    Anyone have experience with this?

    Thanks in advance,
    b.

    Most probably incompatible vbios.
Try it on another system with optimus and flash it with Dell vbios.

Thanks for an answer, unfortunatelly, I don't have access to such system :(

I found thread about flashing with external flasher, but it seems dead end as I don't have layout file for bios:
    https://www.computerbase.de/forum/threads/gtx970-mit-zerflashtem-bios-rettbar.1765960/

Bios chip on K2100M is Winbond 25X20CLNIC-1339 of 2Mb size. I probably need full size bios, not only modded part. What I found over internet are partial rom files (99 - 130 Kb).

I am guessing, have 0 experince with graphics cards :)

    Board is MXM-A (82 x 70 mm)

Unfortunatelly, I have no idea about HW ID. According to sticker with QR code is LS-9249P

Internet lists this as "LS-9249P K2100M N15P-Q3-A1 2G DDR5 Video Graphic Card For HP ZBook 15"
    http://scusatrading.com/hpquadrok2100mls-9249p2gbdddr5zbook15laptopnvidiagraphicscard.aspx

Card looks identic with the one from this page.

    Other info from stickers:
    455M F C32L06
    LS-9249P D2 F E12
    SPS: 734277-001

Suggested link with bios does not help -- listed files are just part of whole bios, to perform HW flash one need complete bios dump, file size would be around 2 Mb.

All those posts about flashing card in computer, when you insert card and have VGA output so flash can be performed -- all this apply to optimus systems only?

    Thanks in advance,
    b.

No, you can flash it actually in every system where the card is well recognizable in the bios and can boot on post screen.

    Hey guys,

I was looking for graphic card update for my 8760w 2630qm/20GB/ssd+hdd with only the basic ATI... for some light gaming and better acceleration in PSP/Lightroom, as I am photographer. If everything would go well, I could also sell my desktop Xeon machine. I do not know for 100 % but I am pretty sure I have a Dreamcolor display. If I can check that somehow without demontage, let me know. Colors are great and angles very good too so I am sure its not TN version no way, IPS most probably. Not sure if HP produced models with other IPS than Dreamcolor.

I have read there might be some problems with particular types of panel in a display when changing graphics. I was looking for GTX 970m (maybe 765if I would go cheap way) as a upgrade. F.E: from here https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nvidia-GeF...7:g:jMEAAOSwi3xb-bqK:rk:3:pf:1&frcectupt=true I believe the Clevos/Dell Should be the safest bet.

Link for cooling system is welcome as not sure if there is only one type for nvidia.

Point is I would like to have it ideally plug n play, as I do not have another machine to try that. Using UEFI bios and I think the newest one for the laptop. Not sure how it goes with inf update and other stuff. If OS would be problematic but machine could post and boot and vbios could be flashed somewhat of flashdrive or so, I should be able to do so as former IT tech.

Not having experience with unofficial graphics changes in laptops tho. Thanks for tips/links.

I have a GTX 780m 4GB that I'm very happy with. In my book anything newer is a waste because it will be bottlenecked by our older CPUs. I bought it from eBay seller Dsyzyl in China and I can highly recommend him as a great seller to deal with. Bought a 970m originally and had compatibility issues with it going into my 8740w. He confirmed the issue was related to my chipset and took return on the 970m (he paid for return shipping to China), refunded me, and then sold me a 780m at a discounted price. Been working great since, just took over a month to get to me due to customs.

    Hello,

Well, I believe the 970m should have lower consumption than 780m. Feel free to correct me. Also I rather wanted to use new item, not refurbished as there might be done good job or poor one - not a fan of owen baked chips.

The cost of a new card would make an upgrade for an old laptop like this extremely expensive and not worth it. I paid $250 for my 780m and about $320 for the 970m that I returned, both used. Now that I own an 8760w that would work with a 970m I wish I would have kept it but you know what they say about hindsight...

These aren't refurb cards, they are tested good ones pulled from working laptops. Nothing wrong with used parts as long as they aren't DOA.

You are correct that consumption will be lower but besides that and an extra 2GB VRAM the 780m will actually perform better based on the number of cores available.

Absolutely wrong. 970m will blow 780m away anytime. No matter 780m has more cude cores, still 970m is by far much faster GPU. Around 20-25% in most gaming scenarios.
Also it is 75W vs 122W for 780m because of the better technology, so all votes go to 970m.

I have another question, related to fan speed. Have someone an idea why custom fan speed of full blast (100% target fan speed) in Notebook Fan Control results as 97% real rpm under “current fan speed”?
Has my fan degraded by 3% already and should I consider replacement fan?

Depends on how long you have been using it, it might. Take a notice at exact rpms and if they continue to drop, definitely consider replacement.

    Thanks @triturbo

For now it seems like this:
    Default: 3840rpm at 100%
    My fan: 3728rpm at 100% (97,1 effective)

Could this small drop reflect on the temps?

Yes it could, but not significantly. Couple of degrees tops (1-2°C). If it continues to drop, the temps would be further affected, hence new fan recommendation.

The thing is, how is it with drivers tho... Also if anyone tried that with 8760w particulary, it would be great. To the dreamcolor version... I noticed a colorful wheel mark at right top of lcd bewel in the video. I do not have it there myself. Also, what is the cooling solution for nvidia cards? Same heatpipe, with a same fan or different fan. Is it a solution used for default nvidia 5010 quadro or lower nvidias for that type? Any link to the swapping guides, knowledge? Thanks.

Was this a straight swap? I have a 8760w as well with a 4000M I'm considering upgrading. Also, how can you run 12800 (1600mhz) Ram in your 8760w? I thought memory speed goes up to 1333mhz in the 8760w.

Yes, 1333Mhz is the max limit speed on 8760w.

By any chance - do you also use DC display with this 980M ??

Nope it is not my friend. I work on 1600 MHz for couple years on my 8760w.

You have to find a right model in order to work in dual mode (mine 2x 8GB). Also CPU need to support the 1600MHz.

You have RAM, capable of operating at 1600Mhz , but practically operating at 1333 ;)
Just take a screenshot of cpu-z and post it here to prove your theory.
No single 8760W/8560W in the world can operate at 1600Mhz for the memory. First Elitebook, supporting 1600MHz is 8770W.
Every i7 2nd gen support 1600Mhz, but the MoBo of 8760W doesn’t- it is locked by HP at bios level to operate at 667/1333Mhz
It has nothing to do with the channels - dual or single. Here we talk about the frequency of the memory modules.

I can't access my screen right now but by far I remember not every 2gen i7 supports 1600MHz - just compare i7 2620qm with 2820qm.

    https://ark.intel.com/pl/products/52231/intel-core-i7-2620m-processor-4m-cache-up-to-3_40-ghz

Thus my worry about the HP lock u mentioned is unrecognized. Can u share the information about this lock anywhere www ?

I know what Intel i7 2nd gen support.
We are discussing here the support of HP mobo of 8760W with 2nd gen Intel i7 - every single i7, no matter it can provide 1600Mhz support for the RAM, is locked on bios level to operate at 1333. I had 2630QM, 2670QM,2920XM and 2960XM - every single one of them operated at 1333Mhz. Period.
You can take a look at the specs of 8760W on their site, it was mentioned there.

That is interesting but experimental nature drives me to dig deeper.
You claim it is mainboard dependent lockdown to 1333MHz.
How about different mobo variants just for 8760w ?? Not sure how many there really are - Ive heard about 2:
    HP 652508-001 and 652509-001

What do you think - would that make a change in work @1600MHz ??

OR finally...would Bios update unlock the clock ??

To both your questions, the answer is no, unfortunately.
The two part numbers of the mobos indicate only that one is i7 capable (with 4 slots for the ram memory) while the other is limited to i5 support (2 slots for memory, 16GB max supported). Both have the same other specs including 1333Mhz ram frequency limitation.
As long as we speak about the bios, there is no official update from HP (I’ve tried all of them, including the latest F.66) which enables support of 1600Mhz on 8760W. When it comes to some modded unlocked bios - it never was, is or will be possible on workstation’s HP class laptops as long as they have protection and are heavily locked.
So, the only solution in this case (and my advice) is - move to 8770W. It is not a difficult upgrade, you need several parts and around 200$ if you get lucky to find the parts second hand at reasonable price on ebay.

I claim your solution to upgrade to 8770w is the best move for 1600MHz.
You mentioned something regard F.66 bios - I see its release outstands the others for a couple years. There is not much in the bios version history for details.
Do you or anyone know - what is new in this version ?? Is is worth of upgrade ?? Is there a way to rollback to the F.62 after upgrading to F.66 ??

    Much preciate.
