The light sequence is in the attached video. What I was asking is does it show a 1-4-1 sequence or 5-1 in flashes? In other words does the Caps Lock light up once before starting to flash the code to confirm the led is working or does it just flash the code straight away. The confusing thing is that the whole machine is working now so I don't understand what's causing the problems. Thanks

I have never seen something like what is happening after the initial 5 blinks (which should be a problem with the motherboard if we follow the hp‘s error codes description ..)
Which bios version do you have?

Yes it's very confusing. The bios is quite old, 68SAD Ver. F.29

Oh, you really want to update to the latest version. F.29 is insanely old one...

Anyone knows whether the M4000M from Dell works in the 8760w non-DC?

    Unlikely...
8760W is very picky for most of the GPU upgrade options...

Hm, thanks for your imput, mirage_bg. I've read some negative results, too, but somehow I am still tempted to try :)..

Anyway, btw. I can confirm that this method works to Bios OC K4000M beyond +135:
    https://linustechtips.com/topic/105...-kepler-and-probably-maxwell-ii-bios-tweaker/
I flashed mine to 835, and then took it to 945 manually with nvidia inspector, and applied a moderate memory oclock of 900/1800 MHz.

I have the i7-2670QM and Quadro 3000M, is it normal for the VRM to be so hot?

    Idling at CPU 50c / GPU 50c / VRM 105-110C

Also, does anyone know the thickness of the thermal pads needed for the 3000M if I were to replace them?

Yes it is normal, I have seen 113-115C before on my previous 8760W , also with Quadro 3000M

    Hi @ all,

I was last time here when I got my Elitebook 8760w in December 2011. It still runs perfectly fine and after I re-pasted it for the first time about a month ago (the fan was constantly spinning high) it is now quite like it was when I got it. The CPU now doesn't get any hotter than 77-79C under full load and is about 48-50C when it "rests". GPU is 40C when it rests. - That was looooong overdue.

Except upgrading it with 3 2TB CRUCIAL SSD's, and 32GB RAM, I haven't modified anything on it. I truly love my the EliteBook (it is just such a nice solid piece) and thought about pimping it a little bit, as long it would make any sense. I would like to use it as my "Render Computer" for my CAD planning's while I am planning on my brand new Alianware Area 51-m R2, therefore I need both, more CPU but even more important as much as possible GPU power, because my CAD Program uses the GPU for for rendering.

I read that thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/hp-elitebook-8760w-cpu-and-gpu-upgrade.834310/ however, for some reason, this upgrade didn't turn out as expected.

So, my question is: What (maximum?) upgrade option would I have?

You can upgrade it max to GTX 980m or Quadro M5000M.
But I highly recommend you to upgrade the motherboard to 8770W. You need also USB 3.0 board/Sound board USB 2.0, Touchpad and Fingerprint sensor. All can be found on AliExpress for really reasonable price.
What is your current CPU and GPU?

    Hello @mirage_bg

I am sorry for mu late answer. Below is my current configuration.
    • HP 8760W
    • DreamColor@60Hz
    • I7-2760QM
    • Crucial DDR3 32GB@1866MHz CL13
    • NVIDIA Quattro 3000M
    • 3x2TB Crucial MX 3000
    • Intel(R) Centrino(R) Ultimate-N 6300 AGN
    • Backlit keyboard
I assume you have the maximal possible configuration for your Elitebook? I think I would like to do the same with my "baby". Could you help me with what exactly I should look for? I already looked after the Motherboard and figured right away there are different models available. E.g. with 2 and 4 RAM slots. Therefore, it would be great if you could post Links to the components, before I order something wrong.

Many thanks in advance for your time! - Much appreciated!

    Hi,

Okay, you need the following components to make the upgrade to 8770W successful:

    1. Motherboard - HP Part No. 688746-001
    2. Audio/USB 2.0 board - HP Part No. 689284-001
    3. USB 3.0 board - HP Part No. 689283-001
    4. Top cover (includes TouchPad) or TouchPad only - HP Part No. 688747-001

Your DC panel will work with the components above but you need to install HP Mobile Display Assistant so you can use the panel's full brightness (8760W has ambient light sensor, 8770W doesn't have it)

    Greetings

    Thank you so much @mirage_bg

Wow, I did not know that almost all of the hardware must be changed in order to make it work. That means, technically only the case with speakers and the screen remains original.

So, what (max) CPU and what Graphic Card shall I look for?

When you already have DreamColor, Quadro P5000/GTX 1070 are the best options for you and the CPU can be upgraded max to i7 3940XM.

You are saying that the Audio/USB 2.0 board, USB 3.0 board and the TouchPad from the 8760w won't work on the 8770w Motherboard, however, I found parts which are advertised to work work for both, 8770w and 8760w?
Are there different versions available which may work for both while others only work for one model and would it be even possible that my existing USB boards (2.0 and 3.0) and my touchpad would work too?

Here is what I found so far:

    1. Motherboard - HP Part No.688746-001

    2. Audio/USB 2.0 board - HP Part No. 689284-001

    3. USB 3.0 board - HP Part No. 689283-001

    4. Top cover (includes TouchPad) Not found

    5. Top cover (excluding TouchPad) For 8770w + 8760w, but not necessary required - right?

    6. TouchPad only - HP Part No. 688747-001

    7. CPU i7 3940XM

    8. Graphic Card nVIDIA GeForce GTX1070M

    9. Graphic Card nVIDIA Quadro P5000

    I wouldn't take such a risk.
Better order the parts for 8770W only. I am pretty sure the USB 3.0 board has different connector to the motherboard and I am 101% sure the cable to the motherboard coming from the touchpad is different.
For USB 2.0 Sound board it might or it might not work... 8770W has SRS premium sound PRO, whilst 8760W is non-PRO, so there would be a difference for sure. Every board for 8770W has "ALLADIN" label on it. Look for this when you buy them.
The CPU and GPU won't make you any problem, just make sure the GPU has MSI vBios on it.

I can confirm that Quadro M4000M, Bios version: 84.04.9B.00.06, works in the 8760w non-DC right out of the box without any problems.
According to the seller on ebay, it is NDIVIA P/N: 900-52754-0320-000, HP Spare No.:827227-001 / 806268-001.
Card was recognized immediately, just the usual inf modding and I was good to go.

    Words of wisdom needed

I have a quite old (2011) 8760W. I got it by accident and I’ve never seen it running. Graphic card seems to be Nvidia 3000.

Because it won’t boot I’ve disassembled it to bare bones. Only main board and cpu are left (NO memory). Temporarily added top cover to get power switch working. After connecting to mains fan spins a couple of revs. Even if I have NOT switched it on the CPU starts to warm up and after 15 secs or so fan goes to full speed. I’ve already tried hard reset but that didn’t help.

I can’t see any marks of excess heat and the cooler is not that dirty.

If I connect the graphics card the fan goes to full speed immediately after connecting to mains, stays that way about 5 secs then about 1 sec pause and then the same sequence starts again.

I’ve also tried with two different PS both of which seem to work OK with another HP laptop.

How to identify which CPU it has?

    CPU broken?
    MB broken?
    BIOS corrupted?

    Any ideas anyone ?

I have this issue but can't offer any help, see a couple of pages back. Occasionally it won't boot up and the fan runs for 5 seconds, goes off and repeats until you power off. After a variable number of times of removing power it reboots and works fine. I've ended up leaving it switched on permanently until I can find a new motherboard as I've not found the cause yet.

CPU should work no problem, GPU compatibility depends largely on the Bios, a reflash may be needed.
From personal experience, I can only confirm Quadro M4000M, Bios version: 84.04.9B.00.06,
which is similar to 970M GTX.
Going for both i7-2960XM and GTX980M might hit the thermal limits of the cooling system.

Thanks for this I have been told to enable UEFI in my bios which I have done also is there a certain amount of ram or anything like that needed to use these effectively because I have 12GB of ram but plan to eventually go to 32GB and do you have a link to the bios version because right now I'm using a version that supports my Quadro 3000m at the moment. EDIT: just checked and on system info it says my bios version is F.66, 13/02/2018

    2960ХМ is terribly hot CPU...
Without liquid metal and lifted laptop from the backside, temps would easily hit 100-105C and sudden shut downs won‘t be surprise.
Much better option is 2860QM which is faster than 2920XM and almost on par with 2960.

Oh dam well I have my laptop raised on a dock almost all the time but my main reason for going with the 2960 was because of its speed and that I knew it would be compatible with the 980m unlike my 2620 which i have now but i don't really like the idea of having my laptop shutting down every 10mins because of the heat plus i want to do gaming on this laptop so that's why i was told to go with the 2960. well thanks for the advice mirage_bg I think will now set my sights on buying the 2860qm instead of the 2960

Hi, could anyone tell me where I can find the Bios version: 84.04.9B.00.06 or will my bios version F.66 work with a gtx 980m already?

84.04.9B.00.06 refers to the video Bios version of the Quadro M4000M card I am running, not the Bios of the 8760w.
My mainboard bios is also F.66.
Since a M4000M and a gtx 980m are same generation Maxwell cards, in theory the gtx 980m should also
work with mainboard bios F.66, however, I can't tell which video Bios version such a gtx 980m would need.

If you are lucky it will work right out of the box with the internal screen and you are good.
If it doesn't, and you can only get a picture via external output (vga or display port) you will have to ask here in the forum for a compatible vBios.
I suspect that a vBios which works in the 8770w will also work in the 8760w, and quite a few 8770w users have done this upgrade, but from personal experience I can only give waterproof advice about my own upgrade with the Quadro M4000M.

Hi guys just thought I'd say the GPU and CPU worked perfectly right out of the box and I've been using them for 4months now with no problems :) but I also wanted to ask would this work in my 8760w even though it's for a lower model I know it sounds stupid but I wanted to ask the question anyway just in case it would work because I can't find any for the 8760w https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252714450090?hash=item3ad6f47caa:g:nnMAAOSwnHZYcX6Y

I tried this a while (year?) back and it doesn't have a port multiplier--either on the unit itself or the advanced docking station. I also tried an esata expresscard I happened to have and it didn't either. :(

In other updates, I've been running 32GB successfully for years now and 16GB DDR3 modules won't work (as expected with the i7-2820QM).

Still running strong as my primary travel companion with the extended battery for a lovely 4hrs+ of work time even at 100% duty. I got a Dell M6800 a while back to make into a backup unit and to have one of each of the era, lol.

I also finally got the 200w+ power supply as I only had a 90w one and it was starting to have issues charging when the extended battery was also dead.
