It took a few hours of reading posts and lots of configuration, but I eventually managed to install and use openSuSE 11.3 on my HP 2740p to my satisfaction.
Advantages compared to WIndows 7 include better boot times (including the ability to boot from an SSD card in the Expresscard slot), and the ability to run a Windows 7 system-restore even if the Windows partitions are completely broken and no CD-ROM drive is available.
Ubuntu 10.10 (released October 2010) has better out-of-the-box compatability with the 2740p than openSuSE 11.3 (released July 2010), but my preferred Linux flavour is openSuSE, so I persisted in configuring openSuSE until everything I needed, and probably many things I don't need, worked.
The link to my web-page includes all kinds of Linux configuration tips stretching back for years, the HP 2740p-relevant sections are near the bottom of the web-page.
Hope some Linux users find my experience useful!

What kind of battery life are you seeing under Linux?
I have a HP 2730p (the previous generation of your 2740p) and while I've used Linux a bit on it, I am waiting on a 250GB hdd to arrive before I do and serious multi-booting and testing (damn snow storm is delaying/ closing everything, especially the Chicago land area)
From the little bit I was using it, I remember something about 3 hrs or so with low screen brightness, and Wi-Fi on while browsing.
