I have no definitive answer, just guessing.

Would it be possible that while undocked it is using integrated graphics (to save power) and it has no driver or old version with bad performance.

    Hi guys,

Would you by any chance know of the SRGB coverage of the 1920x1080 option on the Elitebook 840G2?

I have searched high and low on the internet for the SRGB coverage for that combination, but cannot find any specific numbers?

If any of you have the 1080p screen on the 840 G2 - What is your opinion? Do you like the screen? How are the colors..and the viewing angles?

    Thanks.

    Thanks alot for the feedback.

Yep did finally get the Elitebook (someone had told be the Z14 would be better, but couldnt get that one where I live).
The screen is lovely - I will say that. It seems to have more color reproduction than compared to my Dell U2312hm.

    HOWEVER
The quality control on this product is terrible. It is no wonder HP is having problems.

I have very significant backlight bleed on my screen on the top right hand corner - so much so that when watching movies it is noticeable.
When I press certain keys on the keyboard, there is almost a cracking sound - as if I am hitting a wierdly angled plastic bit underneath.

This is shameful for HP to have such a product classified as a business line. My Thinkpad X240 from work is absolutely flawless, and feels better built and I really wish I had imported a Thinkpad T450s from abroad (couldn't find it in my home country)

I am not impressed with HP at all and will have to send my laptop back to get repaired.

I would reinstall your graphics drivers. Uninstall whatever, if anything is installed. Intel, AMD, nVIDIA drivers. And reinstall the HP provided drivers. The laptop might just be powerful enough to power through video/flash with generic drivers without hardware support - but when undocked it goes into low power mode which slows everything down, causing stutter. Some people do not see the slight stutter a software decoder often does compared to a hardware assisted decoder.

Sounds to me like the discrete graphics is enabled in docked mode, but when undocked the Intel Graphics takes over. Would bet something is up with that driver.

Attempt also to set your PC to Balanced or High Performance mode by right clicking on the battery symbol in the taskbar and selecting "Power Options". Not that I think it will matter most likely as its not a solution but might improve on the stuttering slightly now allowing the CPU to throttle to low frequency.

Also, does this problem happen with different media players? What media player are you using?

    Hi guys,
I have a bit of a problem. I own a 840 G1 laptop, which is great, but I wanted to update a firmware on my HP lt4112 modem (which is a genuine HP part, but bought later) in HP 840 G1 Laptop, so I downloaded from the Drivers page proper file: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5405097&swItemId=ob_152395_1&swEnvOid=419... . I downloaded it and run the exe. After a few phases, when it came to "restoring user data" it stuck, and after a while an error popped up saying: "Error code: 21 - couldn't restore user data". From that point the modem is not visible in Device manager in WIndows. I removed the cover, remove the modem, run laptop and then instal it once more and restarted laptop, but the bios said that a new WWAN modem was installed, which is not on the list and therefore the system will switch it off.

I tried to run previous upgrade: sp69476, but now the system does not even find the port for update ("Error code 10- Could not find the port"). Any suggestions?

840 G2: How do I adjust the camera resolution? It's stuck at 480, I think it should be able to use 720.

Edit: Changed it with Youcam bloatware.

I'm about to buy a bigger SSD for my 840 G2. I've tried to find info about the M2 slot but all I know is that it works with both PCIe and SATA.

Are there any drawbacks using only a M2 SATA drive? Will it boot slower (like some PCIe M2 SSDs does) , or at all?

The SATA M2 500 GB Crucial MX200 cost 14 % more than a 2.5" 500 GB BX100 , but getting the former will leave the 2.5" bay empty for future upgrades.
Doing the opposite doesn't seem like a good idea as this M2 slot won't work with upcoming SSDs anyway.

I wouldnt really worry about boot speed on a SSD as they are all 500MB/s+
You probably get 800-1000MB/s on the fastest 4-lane SSD out there if the laptop actually supports it.
I would use the M2 slot as boot/windows drive and put a 1TB SSD in your 2,5" bay or a M2 caddy.
Choice is yours really, there is no real wrong solution really.
(I for the fun of it would put the Samsung 840 in my 840 ;) )

No, I meant slower initialization when booting compared to regular SATA, not actual benchmarks.
HP doesn't sell any PCIe3 x 4 for this model (which makes me doubt that it's capable of those speeds), and there's no room for a 2280 card (which makes it impossible without modding, like removing the SD card reader), so I won't hit any record speeds anyway, which is fine by me.

    I put the 2260 MX200 512GB in my 820.
In terms of difference in initializiation speed it would be in the milliseconds, compared to sata ssd's.

I don't know the actual figures, I would like to know myself.

I realize now that it's an expensive solution. I'm better off buying a 1 TB SSD, that will be enough for a long time.

    Hey folks,

has anyone tried to swap a FHD display from the 820 G2 / G3 to the 820 G1?

I do believe that the total size of the display should fit but i am not sure if the BIOS will deny it...

    Greatings

There are FHD displays for the G1, dunno if it's available tho.
    Page 23: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04657844-1.pdf

The G2 is very similar to the G1, the G3 is thinner. This may indicate a different display assembly (Just speculating, of course).

I think the BIOS only have white lists for communication devices.
RAM, HDD, and even CPU can be changed (when physically possible), I think the same goes for displays. Third party displays are sold for elitebooks, so it wouldn't surprise me if it works.

    Thanks for your reply.
You gave me a hint that leads me to try smth. next few weeks ->

I'll buy a 725 G2 Display and try to replace it with mine. I'll report any information about that... I'm kinda sure, that it'll work, as HP doesn't even note that you need another cable set. So im quite confident about that. Only thing, that bucks me a lot is, that they insist on "use it with AMD" - but... as I checked the 820 G2 / 725 G2 maintenance guide this specific note is missing. According to this guide you can swap the FHD and HD displays no matter which CPU you are using. I assume that they give that note at the 820 G1 / 725 G2 guide as they are "aware of poor performance" with the IGP of an Intel based system.. but as I could play Portal on 1680x1050 while 3 displays have been connected... I'm quite confident that it'll not be the problem.

    Greetings from germany...

(and sorry for bad grammar, vocabulary and... all the small things I did wrong writing this post).

    And it's me again.

A FHD Display from an 725 G2 is fitting and it's working. Well ... "fitting" is a little bit much. You need to work on the bezel... or just order another for the 820 G2. Otherwise your display is a little bit.. well... you can see that it doesnt fit perfect. And thats annoying me right now.

    What i've ordered so far:

    Display: http://www.ebay.de/itm/171952582021
    Bezel: 781837-001

    Upgrade costs right now:

    ~ 130,-€
Now I am trying to sell my old display ;)

    /E:

It is possible to modify the original 820 G1 bezel and the back cover. All you need is a dremel (?). Use the old display and compare it with the new one. You will easily see, what you should modify / cut. It will NOT decrease the strength and stability of your 820 G1. So I've canceled my order of the bezel and modified it myself.. :)

    //E:

If you modify your cover and bezel... you will loose the feature of automatic boot if you open your notebook. It is solved with a small magnet that needs to be removed. Doing so it cant trigger the sensor anymore.

All 800 series system boards have backlight facility. It's just an additional power connector which supplies power to the keyboard's lights. You don't have to worry about that.

What you need is a backlit keyboard. This keyboard has an additional connector strip which supplies the power to the keys for lighting.

    Hi.

I have a new slice battery for the 840 G1. That's the one which piggy-back underneath the computer.
It gives about 14h to 15h according to the W7 battery application with Wifi and BT, 50% screen luminosity on and light use.

However, i don't have the instructions and the manual is not available on HP's website.

I would like to know if it is safe to charge the computer while on or off with the slice battery on. What about charging the slide battery with the computer on?

    Thanks.

    Best regards.

Took delivery of an 840 G3 and 820 G3 today. They made two changes that I think might irritate a few users:

    1. Easy access panel at the bottom is gone. You now have to remove the rubber feet to unscrew the bottom plate if you want to upgrade memory or storage.
    2. They've changed the power connector, so it's no longer compatible with old power adapters. It's angled, but it's not really much smaller than the older power connectors. Still compatible with the EliteBook G2 docking stations at least.

These design chages would most certainly irritate me.

    1. The tool-less bottom panel was one of the better things going for HP machines since the 2000 series. I wouldn't mind a slightly thicker machine given the feature of a removable bottom panel. Seems they've done away with it now for no good reason.

    2. The overall design aesthetic and the new location of the power button is certainly a reduction in design quality in my view.

Still will be better than a Dell no doubt.

I think the 800 G3 models deserves a new thread.

The new models have almost nothing in common with the older ones. This thread already covers 810, 820, 840 and 850, both G1 and G2. :)

I have a 840 G2 i7-4600u with the 1600x900 panel. I find the display to be pretty bad and want to know if I can upgrade to the 1920 x 1080 FHD display? I found it in the below link, but heard some place that it is only compatible with the i5 version of the 840 G2, is that correct? If not, is this a recommended upgrade for those that want a better display with better viewing angles? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I don't see why it wouldn't work on the versions with i7, it should have the same eDP 1.2 connection ( I have one with i5, upgraded to B140HAN01.2 ).

    I thought all G2's had Broadwell CPU's with model numbers starting with 5, e.g my G2 have a 5200U. The CPU model 4600U tells me it's a G1 with a Haswell CPU.

Check your model in computer properties in Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

Dear all, has anybody tried to replace a horrible TN Full HD screen on HP Elitebook 840 G3 with the IPS screen from G1/G2 generations? I.e. I am interested in installing B140HAN01.2 (aka AUO123D) in 840 G3. Does this work? Thanks!

In case anybody is interested, I've managed to replace a horrendous B140HTN01.2 (TN) screen to a much nicer B140HAN01.1 AHVA (kind of IPS) screen in my HP Elitebook 840 G3. Worked out of box, the replacement itself was very easy: just removed a plastic bezel with a pick and unscrewed four screws keeping the screen in place.

Unfortunately, couldn't find a genuine B140HAN01.2: received a fake TN with a B140HAN01.2 sticker on it from a ****ty seller on ebay (be careful, ask three times, and discuss the return conditions before ordering!). But I'm sure a real B140HAN01.2 would work as well.

I`m looking to replace the horrendous base wxga-TN-screen on my 820 G3.
Can some 820 G2/3 FHD owner give me more detailed information about the screen like the manufacturer, panel name?
You can easily get this information with tools like hwinfo64.
I took a closer look at the following panel: AUO B125HAN02.2. It my work on our laptops.

Here are some updates on screen replacement.
I replaced the LG wxga-panel with the following screen: Samsung full hd LTN125HL02-301. An international eBay seller sold me
the screen for just 55 dollars.
It fits in perfectly. I`m stunned by the viewing angles, colors and brightness.
It is so much better then the former screen!
If you`re a 820 G3 (wxga) owner just go for it!

since the screen is connected via eDP replacing it is a lot easier than it was with all those LVDS panels.

I like the 820 G3 quite a lot. I can get it for a decent price, quite a bit cheaper than the e7270, especially if I opt for the 1366x768 version.
Now what bothers me is that, there is no 12.5" FHD screen out there which has proper sRGB gamut support. Except one display.
And that is the one on the new Zenbook 3 UX390UA. The name of the display is B125HAN03.0. I can't find a place to buy it anywhere.
I really want a compact, sturdy sRGB laptop that doesn't break the bank. Why doesn't anyone create a 13.3" business laptop? sRGB capable monitors are available in abundance for that size.
There are 12.5" displays that exceed FHD resolution, and also have at least sRGB gamut, but they all require 4 eDP lanes, which I am sure cannot be supported and also they probably cost a fortune, if you can even source them. Anyone got any creative ideas?
Otherwise I probably will end up getting an Asus UX410UA, which is a very nice device, but I read quite a lot of negative stuff about ASUS (of course, this is true for every manufacturer) and at the end of the day, it is a consumer laptop.

Great post. Are the colors really that good? Because the color gamut of that display is still limited (50% NTSC I believe, so quite bit less than sRGB)

Just one question, according to NBC, the 840 G3 uses PWM backlight dimming. Can you confirm this?
Did swapping the panel help or change anything in this regard?

Anything with eDP connection at bottom right is compatible.
I would suggest getting an IPS display with at least 72% gamut.

When I get my replacement display + 840 G3 I will give you all the info. Stay tuned...

This is the name of the eBay listing:

Exact AUO B140HAN01.3 H/W:2A F/W:1 72% High GAMUT AHVA Laptop Screen 14" LED IPS

I don't recommend you buy it from that listing now, since the price has been increased massively since I purchased it.
There's a good chance I receive the screen tomorrow, if not I will definitely share my experience this week for sure.

There are two other things I am wondering about, firstly, the eDP cable.
In the service manual it lists one item number for the display cable:
"The display cable is available in the Cable Kit using spare part number 821174-001 for 14” computers"
As you may know the 840 G3 is available with a WQHD (2560x1440) display. Such a display requires 40 pin (4 lanes) eDP connection. The lesser screens, namely the WXGA and FHD one, use a 30 pin (1 or 2 lane) connection. How can the same cable do both connections? Unless the 821174 part number includes two different cables?
This does not appear to be the case --> http://thumbs1.picclick.com/d/w1600/pict/302144585340_/Brand-NEW-HP-Cable-Kit-P-N-821174-001.jpg

Secondly, is there a WLAN/WWAN whitelist on this thing? Just curious as this could be interesting to know for the future

Ugh, I can't believe it.... They sent the wrong screen :(

    The screen I received is a LG LP140WF1 (SP)(U1).
This one has 60% NTSC Gamut (about 85% sRGB) and it is glossy.
Let's see what their excuse is...
