Not dirt but oils from using the trackpad. The Zbook has a matte finish so its harder to see the discoloration. Both can be cleaned off relatively easy, but they are oils, so if you leave them on there for a while it could permanently damage the surface.

Here is a Zbook 15u configuration:

HP's Small & Medium Business Online Store

Basically, for $350 more than a Elitebook 850, you get:
    1. Faster Broadwell processor
    2. UWVA (IPS/AHVA/FFS) Display
    3. PCIe SSD
    4. AMD M4170 dedicated graphics
    5. Better build quality
    6. In the USA, 3 year onsite service (Elitebooks are mail in by default)

Overall, I think it is worth it. Hopefully once resellers get these it will be a bit cheaper. Around $1600 would be perfect.

The Fn and Ctrl key on my 820 seem to be inverted somehow. I tried toggling the Fn key check box in BIOS with no luck.

The problem is present in both Windows and Linux Mint.

Any ideas? This was not the case when I bought the laptop a few weeks ago,

Nice selection and info! This is a very good alternative and that price is still very good considering the features!

When I saw zbooks on photos, they seem to have less smooth surface than Elitebook 800s. Is the surface (especially palm rest area) comfortable to rest for many hours?

Must be an optical illusion. The palm rest is smooth and has a similar feel to the Elitebook. The Zbook 15 and 17 are somewhat more uncomfortable for extended use given they sit taller on a desk and are heavier than the Elitebook when you use it on your lap.

    Hi.
I am the happy owner of a HP Elitebook 840 G1. I've bought a basic i5 version, and i have upgraded it to M2 SSD + 1 GB SATA magnetic drive + 16 GB of RAM.
I have bought this WWAN card http://www.ebay.fr/itm/271655631563?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I have checked everywhere to ensure this Huawei ME906E is similar to a HP WWAN card known to be working with this laptop.

And yet, after installing this card in the appropriate M2 slot and connecting both antennas (red on main, blue on aux), which are not easy to plug on the tiny card, the computer stays forever on the HP logo on the next boot and ESC can't get me to the BIOS.

It may be that there some whitelist in the BIOS. However, this card should work. If there is some kind of whitelist, i may need to flash this card with some software to make it looks like an HP one, but how should i do this?

I don't want to give up as this card from ebay is only 25% the price of the official HP part.

    Thanks for your help.

I think there was a BIOS update a while ago that fixed it hanging on boot with a wireless card? Maybe go take a look at the last 2 or 3 BIOS updates and see if there is anything in the release notes? I know others in this thread have had wireless card issues, so do a search in this thread too.

    Hi.
Thanks for this tip. However i have updated today the BIOS to latest 1.30 with no effect on my problem.
I can't be sure if this card is working or not, if it is blocked by a whitelist from HP or if this card has to be modified to look like an HP one.
Unfortunately, i have no other computer with a M2 port to test the card.

I won't be buying a 200 bucks WWAN part from HP directly. So i am wondering if this port could be used for something useful, like a second M2 SSD for instance.

I am curious to know as well. I have a base model 820 G1 without a WWAN modem and am interested in getting some sort of a 4G connection in the near future. I wish to know precisely which card to get (it must be whitelisted) and if it is adequately supported under Linux.

I think i may need to flash my Huawei ME906E with HP's lt4112 firmware to make it recognized by the whitelist.
The only way i could do that myself is buying a M.2 to miniPCIe adapter, then connecting the card in an Acer netbook i have, and flashing it with HP's software, unless Acer have a whitelist of their own (which is very likely to be).
I wonder if it could work with a M.2 to usb adapter made for SSD.

It could also be that my card is dead, hence the computer freezing on the HP logo at boot, but i don't think so anymore after reading the previous post from whoelse.

Yes. Basically there are standard ME906E that works with normal laptop but will not work with Dell or HP. The part no. are not the same unless you can flash the ME906E to HP version of firmware it will not work. I returned mine and bought Sierra WWAN and it is working ok.

I also upgrade the hdd to 850 evo ssd. I use Samsung migration tool to clone the drive, swap the hdd out and during boot, the bios prompt me to reset the M2 cache. I did and is about the see the M2 as a separate drive. The Samsung software suggest I should use ACHI so I did but get Missing Bootmgr message. I boot with win7 cd, go to prompt and use bootrec to fix the mbr and boot. It fixed the boot issue and now I am using ACHI and the smaller M2 as drive D.

If you go back and read through the thread many of us have tried all that. HP is supposed to be sending me a Broadcom BCM943228HMB 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 combination adapter to fix the issue permanently. In the meantime I've been using an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 card from a Lenovo T series in my 840 and it's been problem free.

That Broadcom adaptor still won't be near as good as the Intel 6205.

Must say, that you guys struggling with issues on Windows with this machine. This machine was made for Linux. So unbelievably stable (including wifi) and great performance with 6 hour battery life (standard issue battery). It's incredible.

    Hi.
    Indeed!
I have bought a M.2 to miniPCIe and the card is recognized properly in an old Acer Netbook.
However, every firmware update i have found from HP refuses to flash this card.
I can't find any Huawei firmware update.
Unless someone has magic firmware available, i am stuck.

Now, i hesitate avout buying a genuine HP card or going for a 4G USB modem and using the free M.2 port for something else. However, i don't know if it is bound to WWAN cards or not.

I have an HP 840 G1. It suits my needs very well, but this problem with losing WiFi after sleep is driving me nuts. Intel says to ENABLE power saving in properties, but disable 'allow this device to wake computer'. This does work for a while, sometimes a day, other times a few days, but problem always returns....

I have noticed another oddity. If I go back to Adaptor power management settings I see that 'allow this device to wake computer' has been enabled again. I check it randomly and see that it is changed back to this setting just as randomly as the problem with WiFi after sleep. Is this the case for anyone else? Thanks for your reply.

The 7260 blows. Nothing you do will fix it. HP is over nighting a Centrino to me after a battle. The one in there now has been excellent. You can get them on amazon for $15 and be done with it.

No it doesn't. It's Windows that blows.

Have a 7260AC running on Linux (with the correct firmware) and stable as hell.

I have nothing against Linux, but for a variaty of reasons most of us must run Windows.
Tinshield, is HP sending you the 6205 you are testing or the 6235 (with Bluetooth) since it would be a more comparable replacement? I need WiFi with Bluetooth. I too, would like/need to stop this endless loop and just move on to something I can use, not troubleshoot, day after day. Don't mind spending a few bucks to get it done.

Just a 6205 which is what I have been using and that is fine since I don't use Bluetooth on my laptop. It's actually my account manager that is getting it for me. They couldn't resolve a replacement through support.

I have a 820 g1 and was wondering if anyone knows what the wwan m.2 port is wired for, will is support a second m.2 ssd? does it have sata or pcie lines or neither? Have looked around for the answer, but have been unable to find it. I assume it will be the same as the 840 and 850. Thank

Basically the card is the same but the firmware is different. The generic firmware will work with many laptop but HP bios will not accept it. You either have to flash the firmware or order the version compatible with HP. Huawei and Gobi hv different pn with the same WWAN that made for IBM, Acer, HP etc. Need to check the part number b4 you buy then it is good.

Only PCIe card out there for the 820 G2 is the Sandisk A110 which I am pretty sure is based on AHCI.
Not sure of the speed but I would expect around 800 - 1000MB/s.

Hopefully more will follow, I am not in a hurry, I can wait for an NVMe drive if it makes sense. Question is if all PCIe m.2 slots combined with v2.3.1 UEFI are NVMe
compatible or there is more to it.

With the 820 G2 I wouldn't wait unless you have the Intel i7 inside.
It is a nice snappy notebook but it is still only 12 inch so not that suitable for things you would normally use high speed drives for.

If you want speed now you can setup a striped partition inside windows which will double the speed if you stripe across the M.2 and a normal SSD.

Only thing with striping is you lose data if even 1 of your 2 drives fail.
I use it in my Zbook 17 to store games (excl save data) to reach 1500MB/s across 3 SSD's

    Hello,

what is the maximum angle, the HP 820 Display can be opened ?

I read a lot reviews, according to the pictures, it's definitely not 180 degrees.

    Hi.

Would anyone knows how the led of the cam works on the 840 G1?

I mean, is it lit by software or is it connected to the cam? The idea is to know if somebody could be spying at you without lighting the led.

Does anyone else experience loss of Intel USB 3 functionality in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 with the 840 G1?
Running the custom modded Intel USB drivers now from Windows 7 that has been adapted for Win 8+ instead of the Microsoft drivers normally used for Windows 8 and 10 to see if that resolved the issue.

Very frustrating and random. Might work fine for days, then suddenly the USB3 ports simply disconnect any devices connected. Reboot restores functionality.

Windows 10 works like piss on the 840 G1 if anyone wonders by the way. Constant problems with the switchable graphics drivers and BSOD/complete system lockups.
Running latest BIOS/firmwares. The HP Security Suite does not work either, so forget SSO login using your fingerprint from POST.
Had to completely disable sleep in Windows 10, because if it went into sleep, it would fail to restore and reboot.

    Windows 8.x works better, unfortunately.
No need to remind me Linux is superior, this is true, but not for the 840 G1 when it comes to boot time, sleep states, battery life and some other functionality like fingerprint login etc.

    hi every one
i have an HP elitebook 840 G1 and i messed up with partitions; now i have a C partition for windows and D partition for data.
i like to restore it like it was befor (factory setting); for that i need the origina l partition schema and if possible a downloadable image from original partitions (named i think HP_TOOLS and HP_RECOVERY)
Note that i don't have restoration Kit; and when i ordered one from HP i get a regular windows 7 installation DVD and an application&drivers DVD

    Config:
    HP Elitebook 840 G1, 1920x1080 LED, i7-4600U / 16Gb DDR3 / Intel HD 4400/AMD Radeon 8750M 1Gb / 512Gb SSD / Windows 10 64_bits

sentinelle, thanks for your input. Never tried fiddling with it myself actually, might give Windows 10 another go later on. Staying with Windows 8.1 for now since it kind of works as well as 10. Just a minor difference in the amount of GUI annoyances like Metro etc.
Do you have stuff connected on the USB 3 ports all the time? If so, do you sometimes get a random "hardware device disconnection" sound? USB 2 works fine. Just the ports on the right side. Will attempt running Linux for a few days and see if I experience the same.

And about your partitioning problem, you can manually make them, but for what purpose? I assume also you remembered that your laptop does not have a DVD drive, unless you have an external one since you ordered the DVDs. That said, its possible to make an ISO of the DVD, and make a bootable USB-stick with it. The recovery HP branded Windows DVDs will probably make the partitions you are looking for, but there are no tools in there any normal user would use.

vigorito, you can technically do a RAID 0 (stripe) config on it, but will likely limit the total drive space to about 64Gb. *Correct me if I am wrong guys.
Also, there is really no point incorporating a tiny 32Gb SSD for this purpose, they are basically meant for rotational drive cache.
You can install one 2.5" SSD in the HDD-bay, and a SATA3 M2 SSD in the 2242 sized slot with the same size and then do a stripe for maximum benefit.

After installing windows 10 all videos (on YouTube, Netflix, local mp4s or wmvs) won't play or play with noisy stutters every second.

Tried hp elitebook support and they refuse to help except say to dl drivers manually which didn't help.

Oddly the problem goes away when the laptop is docked and hooked up to two other monitors and it can play videos on all three screens just fine then. But undocking and the problem returns.

This an 850 g1 with switchable graphics.

    Any ideas or help? Thanks.
