I got mine. Unfortunately I got a CMN15C2 display. Which is a TN display with a contrast ratio of 400:1. The 256GB SSD is a C400.

The 8750m can be over clocked, but it is pointless to. I haven't managed to unlock amd power limits, which means the gpu will heavily throttle after running for a while. Even at stock clocks it will throttle itself, but at least the throttling is consistent.

Took the precaution of doing a Macrium Reflect system image and an Easeus ToDo System backup first, but given the identical innards had a pretty good guess I could take my 1TB Samsung EVO out of the 840 G1, pop it into this guy and it would boot up just fine and it did. Et voila - Win 8.1 Pro and all my software and data intact. That saves me a full day easy. -

Are the battery slices for the Elitebook 800s compatible with the brand new 700s, the AMD versions?
I'm interested in the Elitebook 745 G2 with the 1600x900 display, though the price tag of $930 (combined with the battery slice's $220 price) is a bit high.
I attempted to haggle the price down with a HP sales representative last week, but he wouldn't budge even after telling him that I'm a college student. -

I'm about to buy a 840 G1 with an i7-4600U, Radeon 8750M, 256GB SSD and 1080p screen.
Any concerns about that laptop I should be aware of? -
It appears notebookcheck determined that HP allowed throttling of the Elitebook 850's i7-4600U and Radeon 8750M under full load to reduce power consumption even when there was still available thermal headroom: Review Update HP EliteBook 850 G1-H5G44ET Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Is there a way to circumvent the power throttling? -

I weighed my 840 G1 F8F35US-BLO with the non-touch 1600x900 screen and HDD. It came out at 4lbs. I thought this laptop was supposed to start at 3.48lbs? Apart from swapping the HDD for a tiny m.2 ssd I can't see what else they could do to get the weight down and that is only going to shave a fraction off. What model exactly would get it all the way down to 3.48lbs? When I weighed it I thought maybe I had a touch screen version but I don't. So it can't be that. Just wondering....
In any case I am probably going to return it as the screen is really poor quality for such a nice laptop. Colors out of the box are really muted and the screen washes out very easily at anything other than straight on. -
Ahh nevermind I answered my own question. They list a smaller 24whr battery in the datasheet so that must be the extra .4lbs or so difference. Funny that every model I see including mine has the 50whr battery. Underhand way to mess with the specs!

Very interested in this laptop but can anyone confirm if you can put a boot drive in the m. 2 SSD slot?

Just received a brand new HP Elitebook 840 G1 with Radeon HD 8750M and I have installed Windows 8.1 with integrated Update 1, however it seems impossible to get the notebook to wake from sleep. It will go to sleep but on waking the screen is black and it has obviously BSOD (without seeing anything) with the machine rebooting.
Event log show critical event, some rather another about "Bug Check". 99% sure it a video driver problem. Seen threads about this with no fix and angry people that are not happy with HP. Has anyone here worked out how to run Windows 8.1 with the dual Intel and AMD graphics?
I am on the latest BIOS, and have tried HP's Intel and AMD drivers, official Intel and AMD drivers, even modified drivers. I have also reinstalled Windows 8.1.1 several times and attempted numerous installs of the video drivers. I am not interested in back tracking to Windows 7 anymore, is there any way to get the HP 840 G1 to actually work with Microsoft latest OS namely Windows 8.1.1? -

It worked ok on a zbook 14 with the firepro m4100 / hd4400 back in november when 8.1 was originally released. I used stock drivers from hp for both the amd and intel card.

It is aggravating to not be able to have the latest and greatest software updates as soon as they are available, but I sure they will have a fix out soon if its a major issue. I share the same pain as I still don't have MST support on the docking station's DP hub so I still can't connect multiple monitors to my 850 under Ubuntu -
-
I managed to get the machine running with Windows 8.1 Update 1 (fully integrated), basically the trick was to remove all display drivers, making sure uninstall from device manager click uninstall drivers there too. After that only install the Windows 8.1 Intel driver (HP) the very first release (the second release will cause issues), then install the first release AMD (HP) 8.1 driver, after that can install the latest AMD 14.4 driver.
Yeah the throttling is really bad jumping between 570-670 and down to 300MHz, with 300 being throttled to half of the given time. I would understand the idea of the 8750M is for additional support in mostly business like situations for apps that would benefit from it.
Really though what is the point if throttling is so bad the 8750M is running half the power half of the time. Worse part is having huge lag and stuttering. Seem like a travesty to have to under clock the GPU down to 300MHz permanently to keep it level headed, and very weak at that.
btw. 72 C is the point of the throttling, keep it under that (play out in the snow during winter) and you should be good. Pretty much impossible in the real world. -
Every Elitebook 840 that my company bought will not boot unless the LAN cable is plugged in. It will get to black screen just after windows 7 splash screen, and then sit there. It will not do anything until I plug in the LAN cable, and then it instantly finishes the boot up. BIOS is up to date. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I am deciding between zbook 14 and 840g1. Zbook would be with top spec and combination of ssd + 750 gb hdd. Does anyone use this? Is it better to change both to 512 ssd?
Is zbook worth the difference in price? I dont to much gaming, mostly office and some lightroom work. I am looking form smth small and powerful enough to use it for at least 5 years..
Would be a faster option to have 840g1 with 4600u and radeon graphic and upgrade it to 16gb and 512 SSD instead of buying zbook14? -
EDIT:
Hm. Given the fact that the 8750M throttles excessively... Not so sure about buying this laptop. -
The unlock bins go up pretty high, I can overclock this too:
3.7GHz single core
3.4GHz dual core
The above I need to add on +0.0625v to remain stable, passed a 2 day test using the XTU stress test.
Otherwise under voltage works well also. Can sustain higher continuous dual core turbo speeds by lowering the voltage. Setting both single and dual core to 3.0GHz and then dropping the voltage -0.075v results in both cores almost maxing out for a continuous 3.0GHz, it the core speed drop slightly but not much and for a very short time. -
So effectively this laptop can allow high CPU performance, but the GPU is crippled.
Hm...
I found a used Elitebook 840 for $1000. The seller only has a 60-day warranty, and I'm not sure if HP would allow me to buy the $10 one year warranty for refurbished laptops.
Does the i7 4600U allow overclocking on other laptops? -
Did any of you guys with the Elitebook 840 figure out how to stop the CPU from throttling on battery power?:
Review HP EliteBook 850 G1-H5G34ET Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Part of the reason why I'm looking for a new laptop because my 11" Samsung laptop's 1.3 GHz Sandybridge i3 throttles to 800 MHz on battery mode even when Prime95 or MATLAB + VMware remote desktop is running.
EDIT: Have any of you guys tried this vBIOS editor to resolve the throttling?: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/vbe7-vbios-editor-for-radeon-hd-7000-series-cards.189089/
A major drawback is the risk of bricking the GPU. -

The CPU throttling is a bios option. It is something like "Disable Turbo on DC" or something weird like that. I don't mind the throttling. It does help battery life and keeps it running pretty cool while on my lap. Even the i5 4200u has 1.6ghz non-turbo speed so its a night and day difference from sandy bridge ulv.
You may consider a Zbook 14 instead. Its a little more pricier than the 840, but the Firepro M4100 doesn't throttle as far as I could tell. -
For all owners and future buyers of Elitebook 850 G1, there is 850 dedicated page here.
-
I just gave HP technical support a call. I asked them if the Elitebook 840 (with the Radeon GPU) had any throttling issues and mentioned a review website noticed that the GPU reduced its performance at 70C.
The technical support said that they never received any calls about throttling issues.
Hm... -
I'm considering the purchase of a month-old 840 G1 for a University student. She's into a little light gaming and watching movies; other than that it will be a word processor/internet device for the most part. It will be her only computer and what she really needs is something very sturdy. That's why the 840 G1 appealed to me - it seems to have a decent build quality. In the past we've purchased Lenovos for her.
The seller says it has the 14" 1366 x 768 screen. In reviewing this thread, more than a few guys have mentioned that the panel isn't the greatest. I also found that this rig can come with 4 screens
-(35.6-cm) 14.0-in LED, HD, AntiGlare (AG), SVA (1366×768), 200 nits display with and without webcam
-(35.6-cm) 14.0-in LED, HD+, AG, SVA (1920×1080), 250 nits display with and without webcam
-(35.6-cm) 14.0-in LED, HD+, AG, SVA (1920×1080) 250 nits capacitive touch display with webcam
-(35.6-cm) 14.0-in LED, FHD, AG, SVA (1920×1080) 300 nits display with and without webcam
My question is - should we expect the screen I mentioned above to be less than stellar? Is this the panel in the one you had, jbrierley? I realize that a TN panel has its viewing angle limitations but there's a TN panel in her current T420 and she isn't complaining. I just wonder if the panel in this particular 840 T1 might be significantly less attractive than the one in her T420.
Any comments are appreciated.

So, I have an 840 and bought the slice battery. My experience with the battery is good as far as extending run time, however, I've had an unpleasant issue with it twice. Both times I've put my laptop in my backpack on standby with the slice battery attached resulted in the laptop overheating in the bag. I am not sure why it even turned on or what happened. Haven't had an issue without the battery.
I've also had some issues with the wifi having trouble connecting but that seems to have subsided.
*Edit* Installed 1.20 BIOS. Will see if that helps the battery issue. -
What's the main difference between these models and the newer 750, 740 and 720?

nothing is different. my guess is this. the 8X0s G2 is going to get a make over slightly. but of course they want to keep the base model parts for the 840 G1. so they just rebrand it as the 7X0s with no i7 and no dedicated graphics.
but i like dedicated graphics so id actually prefer the 7X5s jus tfor that. but i couldnt down grade my 840 with 8750m graphics.
AS for the graphics side. i cant say that ive noticed throttling, but ive also owned the zbook 14. and the performance was less than the 8750m. but thats prbably based off the drivers are different. but i tested BF4 at the same places with both laptops and got better fps.
i can only wish the G2 models have something like a performance level of nvidia 750m or radeon 8850m/R9 m275 that would please meproviding the notebook is same quality not bigger. and the aesthetics are not dramatically changed. although if the probook 640/650 G2 has the same trend. ill go with that because they have quad core CPU with 8750m in the G1 so i can trade a few mm height and maybe 500g extra for the dvd drive included as a fair trade off.

My HP EliteBook 725 G2 J5N82UT shipped with:
Battery type: HP Long Life 3-cell, 46 WHr Li-ion, 11.25 V, 3950 mAh
According to the Windows battery meter it'll state battery life at around 5 hours maximum if its basically at idle, on power saver, brightness at lowest, backlight KB off. Do any of you have this battery in your 800 series and if so what's your battery life like?

On another note though, I saw this post here:
Official HP statement on Switchable Graphics and Open GL Fun... - HP Support Forum - 766285
But it relates to only the Pavilion and ENVY range, yet I am having the same issue on my Elitebook 840 G1 documented here:
Switchable Graphics Application Settings - HP Enterprise Business Community
Nothing I do seems to help, and it is very frustrating as I use the Unity Web Player, which does a lot of 3d rendering in a browser, yet my brand new laptop with a fairly powerful video card thinks it needs to use the Intel GFX to render this because the ATI driver forces firefox to use the Intel Graphics instead of the Radeon card, anyone got any suggestions? -

Right now I have it working as follows, using the latest (5 June 2014) firmware 2.20.000 release for the HP UltraSlim Dock 2013 ...
- DP#1: 2560x1440 (via an Active DP -> Dual-DVI)
- DP#2: 1920x1080 (via an Active DP -> HDMI)
In my case, I just want two (2) monitors, ideally the same resolution So I'm looking to add a 2nd 2560x1440, likely native DisplayPort. However ... with the price of 4K (3840x2560) panels coming down in price to within $100-125 of the 2560x1440 models, I'm now curious if I could drive dual (2) 4K panels using the two (2) DP on the UltraSlim Dock 2013?
Anyone know what each DisplayPort on the UltraSlim 2013 can do with the 840 G1?
Can the Intel HD4400 do this to start with? I've read a number of DisplayPort 1.2 solutions can drive dual (2) 4K monitors, allegedly the Intel HD4400 included. But the bigger question is, will it work through the UltraSlim 2013 from the 840 G1?
Or am I just safer sticking with adding a 2nd 2560x1440 for dual 2.5K for now? -
Has anyone sold their 840 G1? Though I love the grunt versus weight on this machine, and the quality of the build, I've decided to go a different route and have dropped to an MS Surface Pro 3. That being said, I've never seen a unit depreciate so much, so fast as this one has based on looking at units sold on eBay, and I've had multiple Dells and ThinkPads over the years. Just wondering for those who have bought theirs used, particularly recently, what they're running for out in the wild. Mine's a D8R82AV with 16GB RAM and the 240GB Intel SSD. Even now it still specs on HP.com for over $2,600. Taking the standard 30% off of that most of us got and halving that number I'm still off by about $300 from what I've seen them go for on eBay.
Are they really that unknown? Chaps my hide to see this go for $600-700, I've kept it in pristine condition, but I really don't run around with multiple machines and haven't for years. Still, highly tempted to pull the auction and see if I can come up with a better use for it; don't want to have it sit idle, it's such a good machine.
Any help appreciated in advance. -

I've got the 725 G2 now you got me wondering if the AMD version is going to fare even worse. I don't plan on selling it anytime soon but maybe in a year or two I would.
