Okay, since my local TigerDirect had the Samsung U28D590D in-stock within $25 of Amazon (and most resellers are charging more), I took a trip over and plugged in my Elitebook 840 G1. I updated the drivers to the latest Intel, which was a full version over the HP OEM ones.
Unfortunately, it seems it's limited to 2560x1440. I can only assume this is the limit of the i5-4300U / 4400 GPU. I tried using resolution override, and it was a driver/system bandwidth limitation. It let me define 4K at 30Hz, but it still wouldn't drive it directly out the DisplayPort.
I still decided to get the Samsung U28D590D as I didn't want to drop over $400 on a 2560x1440 panel when a full 3840x2560 panel was under $600. I also didn't mind the "imperfect interpolation" in upscaling the 2560x1440 output up to 3840x2560 -- 2:3 -- on the monitor. That was the nice thing about seeing it at TigerDirect too, I could make that evaluation.
Especially with my personal Clevo P650SE on the way in the near future, which should be able to drive it natively at 4K out of its ports.

Hi guys, got a conundrum here. I have the 840 G1 - on the whole happy with it but had a whole bunch of Windows / software related issues that HP will not entertain fixing. They are basically saying they'll replace hardware or give me a refund.
I picked up a ProBook 640 from eBay very cheap (not my ideal machine but decent enough for the time being). On unboxing I found the 640 had no backlit keyboard. It was a custom model. Other 640 machines come with backlit, and my 840 is backlit, the keyboard looks identical so my questions are...
Can the backlit keyboard be sourced anywhere? I can't seem to find it?
Would the keyboard from the 840 work in the 640?
Could anyone with experience here let me know your thoughts please?
Cheers -

Apparently while the 840 G1's older Intel i5-4300U/4400 will refuse to push out 3840x2160 on DisplayPort, unlike a newer i5/i7-*H/4600 series, it will let me use a DisplayPort->HDMI adapter and send 3840x2160 ... at 30Hz. Now running full 4K.
I have a 2nd Samsung U28D590D on-order now. Hopefully I'll be running dual-4K by the weekend.

P.S. Get the HP DP->HDMI Active Adapter for use with the UltraSlim Dock 2013. I was seeing a bit of cut-out and flicker with the Accel Active Adapter. -

Hello, I want to upgrade a HP elitebook 840 that is now with 4 GB of ram on a single slot
Some website are explaining that dual channel is not well supported by laptops CPUs
Do you think is possible to use in the second slot a module of 8 GB DDR3? Or dual channel must be used with a module of same size? -

The only complaint as of late is that, as vendors get more and more focused on thinness, they are solidering memory and other components on the board. This then limits expansion and, to a lesser extent, could possibly limit performance. It also reduces cost, as people replace entire systems than upgrade these days.
riccardosl said: ↑Do you think is possible to use in the second slot a module of 8 GB DDR3? Or dual channel must be used with a module of same size?Click to expand...
In the case the sizing doesn't match, depending on how the memory is allocated, the TLB pages it, etc..., there can be cases where there is a reduction in performance as all pages are addressed over one channel, when the pages are only allocated on one DIMM. But even then, depending on the TLB, interleaving and other access, that is not always an issue, as many TLB lookups and memory reads can be in-flight.
E.g., keep in mind that it's not uncommon for it to take 9+ cycles to even begin an actual read request from memory ICs.
I.e., SRAM cells of cache on-die or at lesat on-package (depending on level) might be in a single or a few cycles, but DRAM cells are still much, much slower, like in 10s of nanoseconds.
Synchronous clocks are only for the burst. It's not the actual "clock/latency" of the DRAM cells. -

Sigh. Well, I've only had one issue since replacing the WLAN module. I uninstalled the HP connection manager a while ago. The latest LAN driver causes issue. Try the one I linked. There's an issue with LAN/WAN switching with the latest one.

Upgrade HP Elitebook 840G1 display from 1600X900 to 1920X1080IPS??

Anyone done this before?

Hello.
Just bought a new G1 840 (FHD!). Very nice unit, though I'm still getting used to the keyboard.
One thing that did not occur to me when evaluating notebooks is the side of the power outlet. My laptop is oriented on the left arm of my couch, meaning that the power cord is sticking out and is a pain to deal with when moving the laptop from the arm to my lap on a daily basis.
I recognize that it's not feasible to re-arrange where the power inlet is on the 840. However, I do wonder if there are alternative power cords available that don't stick out so far (2 inches??) and would provide more of a flat experience at the power inlet.
Anyone?
Thx.

hi JonDeutsch,
There are after-market power adapters that have a "L" shaped power adapter-heads. Check out ebay or if there is Computer-mall near you, a store should have it. I bought mine at a Computer mall in Hong kong

Hi
It is not a IPS screen which should be better. The colours are washed out and have a narrow viewing angle. I have a 1600x 900 IPS on a bigger display and have no issues.

Thanks for the link. So, that eBay post does not indicate it supports the g1 840. How do you know (or how will I be sure) that it'll work with this laptop properly? Thanks!

HI Bspiral,
looks like an FHD 14" LCD screen is only about $90 USD.
The HD+ connector is: EDP-30P1L
Find out if the FHD connector is the same!
This FHD also has a 30 pin connector...if its the same as the HD+ connector, then you are good to go!
(Not sure if its direct plug and play. I"m guessing the connections cables are not the same)

There's a vide on Youtube showing how to replace the screen for 840: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gqp3zK__Ak
There are a few links in the description. One of them leads to a service guide: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c03943612-2.pdf
On page 66 of the service guide there are details on display panel replacement. Screen models, part numbers (can be used to search on ebay) are listed and detailed instructions on how to remove the screen. Inserting is probably done by repeating the steps backwards. There's only one connector, meaning all of the screen models are interchangeable as long as the size matches. It should be possible to upgrade 1366x768 up to 1920x1080 by just buying a corresponding screen. Unlike in the video it probably isn't even needed to remove the display assembly prior to replacing display. -

In my opinion the FHD screen is easier to read. The text is smaller, yes, but the display has more contrast and less anti-glare coating so it ends up being clearer than the HD+ screen.
As far as the replacement goes, it more or less has to be fully disassembled. The plastic bezel surrounding the LCD can't clear bottom chassis unless the hinges are unscrewed. Then again, with deals like the $600 base model that is on sale at Newegg, it makes pretty good sense to get the FHD screen aftermarket and install it yourself. -

hi win32asmguy,
very help information! thank you.
are you 100% the FHD screen is plug and play with the already 30 pin connector of the HD+ screen?
I assume the graphics card will just identify the new screen and scale appropriately?

If you can find an AUO B140HAN01.2 to install I think it would be perfect. I like that one a bit more than the LG panel, even if the AUO is AHVA, their own copy of LG's IPS technology. Electrically it should be very similar to the B156HAN01.2 that I used, so I think it would be very likely to work. -

The panel seems to have the connector in the right placement as a 820 display.
And a relevant thread about changing panels for X240: forum.thinkpads.com ⢠View topic - Upgrade Display on X240?
You might have to venture out and buy it for testing, maybe returning afterwards if it doesn't work out for you. -

win32asmguy said: ↑I don't think that it would work. FHD appears to be 2-lane eDP while HD is 1-lane eDP. It is most likely that the cable HP made for this model is only capable of 1-lane eDP as they do not sell it with a FHD screen. It should be possible to upgrade from the SVA HD screen to UWVA HD screen, however.Click to expand...

win32asmguy said: ↑Yeah, the screen is working fine. It's not a particularly hard upgrade if you have replaced or repaired laptops before. Just take your time and follow all of the steps in the manual carefully. The hardest part is removing the bezel around the screen without damaging it. Mine is bent out a bit at the corners slightly as it took quite a bit of force to get the plastic snap to pop out when removing it. If you had a plastic spudger that you could use to pop it out from behind rather than tugging on it, then it would probably not get damaged. Or, just order a spare display bezel with the screen just assuming that it will be damaged taking it out.
The AUO screen is alot better than the Chimei - very good viewing angles and the color is very close to sRGB. The panel is electrically compatible, the brightness controls work fine, and it gets the same battery life as it did with the Chimei display. The refresh rate is probably worse than the Chimei, my guess is around 20ms vs. 10ms. It is noticable, but a very worthwhile tradeoff in my opinion. The AUO display also has a very even backlight and very little sparkle mura from the anti-glare coating, so its a very clear and clean looking picture even on solid colors. Even better than the dreamcolor panel on the Zbook 15 in that regard.
Here are a couple of photos of AUO panel installed.
It is nice to see AMD offer some competition in the ULV territory. Actually having the 4200u in my machine for a few months now I think its a very good performer. If AMD can get this same level of performance that it would be a great option, and very tempting if the IGP is more along the lines of what the HD5000 is, while being a couple hundred dollars cheaper. I would kind of miss my Intel Wifi and NIC, though. It would also be bad if the drivers for the AMD processor/GPU aren't as optimised under Linux as the Intel ones are.Click to expand... -
Proud new owner of an 840 G1: HD+, 240gb SSD, 8gb ram, no discrete graphics.
I will add 256gb m.2 SSD and upgrade to 16gb DDR3L ram.
Decided to go with the 840 instead of the zbook 14 because of SIGNIFICANT cost savings and type of usage i'll mostly be doing on it.
Its amazing the low prices they now have on ebay for 840's with HP warranties!

I have HP support involved again. My 840's wifi issues are obviously hardware related.

Juste ordered one because thé price was right.
Was going to replace the HDD with an ssd and install Linux.
Anyone know what size drive it uses?
7 or 9mm?
Also what's the chip set for the WiFi? Intel?
I'm referring to the 820 g1 model with i5 4200.
Any known issues with Linux?
Hardware looks pretty standard. -

All hardware should be supported under recent kernels, except using multiple displays via the 2013 docking station, due to lack of support for the DP MST hub inside of the dock. Support is in kernel 3.17 but still needs some refinement in my opinion. If you are using a single display (connected to the dock) or VGA / DP connected directly to the laptop it works fine. -
