Nice, I was hoping Lenovo would launch a W420, but this Elitebook sounds great.

Yeah, only problem is that the previous version 8440w was never released in Europe, I doubt this one will, but we'll know in june.

I can't believe they aren't showing FX1000M. I'm guessing the GDDR3 Firepro card offered is pretty weak...would like to be proved wrong though.

Every elitebook so far from the XX60 series is a downgrade in graphics...

Ok, ok the quadro 5010 should be strong in 8760w (but very expensive).

Only hope now that the m5950 will be an upgrade in 8560w (or it will be a terrible downgrade in 8760w)

Not only did they leave out the backlit keyboard for this model, they also left out the DreamColor display as well...What a shame. The larger models are heavy enough and this has the better weight/portability factor.

It should have at least come with an HD+ IPS display standard, like the Thinkpad X220. How disappointing!

Yeah, Dreamcolor on a 14" would be very nice, maybe next year - :)

So, other than the option for the i7-2830QM and the video card, what's the difference between this and the 8460p?

I, too wish someone made a 14" laptop with a solid display.

the gpu option baffles me, if they are going to do a workstation I suppose gpu is also a factor? So why choose something so poor

The 8440w didn't have a very strong GPU either. Maybe b/c there is no competition at this size. But if HP keeps this up, they will kill the last 14" workstation. They really need to start offering the low-end 15" card as a high-end option in the 14" workstation.

Or here's a crazy idea. Keep using these crappy 14" class cards but offer a ViDock built into the docking station. Then they can sell you a laptop and your choice of desktop GPU.

EliteBook 8560w and 8760w will have backlit keyboards, the EliteBook 8460w continues to sport the HP Night Light (a small LED light above the display that shines down on the keyboard) and no backlit keyboard

The vidock is going to be offered in the new vaio Z.

And I agree with you, its just a matter of time that the 14'' workstation class disappears. I actually dont need the enterprise class gpu, but I want something that I wont have the hassle to get an external monitor + vidock, otherwise I would just go for a more portable model, like the vaio Z or the x220 or even the 2560p.

Its strange that instead they start offering a cto premium option they go for the excuse that there is no market for it and stop providing it. The macbook 15 is going to steal some sells because of that decision, since its not that larger than the 8460w, some few millimeters. Granted that its not a enterprise class card, but its a powerful one, and with the advent of SB, its going to be though sell for software companies not to enjoy it.

In comparing the higher end configuration of a 8460p and the 8460w, it seems the primary difference is the price and the GPU.

AMD Radeon HD 6470m vs AMD FirePro M3900

Can anyone do a layman's comparison? It appears there really is no practical difference for basic video and laptop use.

I am trying to decide whether to buy the 8460p now or wait for the 8460w and pay the extra $$.

That is what I am trying to figure out.

I will use the laptop in a docking station 80% of the time driving a quality desktop monitor for web and video editing, but not multiple monitors.

Neither my kids nor I will be gaming, but will do HD video editing with Quicktime.

Other than that, use will be basic Office and web surfing.

As is often the case, the workstation graphics card chips and consumer graphics card chips come off the same substrates in production. A subsequent difference may include that within the binning of those chips, those in the higher level of the bin's quality range MAY be set aside for the workstation cards. This would make sense since workstation cards require specilized drivers and are subject to a higher level of testing. The drivers/testing are required to meet minimum levels to be certified with the professional software the card is targeted to run.

In your case, if you are only using consumer software to do limited movie editing, there is little reason to spend the money for the drivers, testing and certifications, since the hardware is the same. If, however, you dream of someday soon (within your expected usage life of this machine) graduating to professional movie editing software, then there would be a value to the additional money spent.

I've seen HP docking stations with dual DVI-D ports. Anyone know if either GPU (on the w or the p) is capable of driving 2x1600p displays via the dock? (or better yet, does anyone know someone in HP who can be asked?)

Based on previous models, is there a difference in terms of screen quality(and options) between the standard model and the workstation model?
