I have been looking for the 8740W with the Dreamcolor IPS type screen.
I have seen Dreamcolor 1.0 and Dreamcolor 2.0 mentioned.
Is the Dreamcolor 1.0 really a TN type display?
Did the Dreamcolor 1.0 every come installed on the 8740W?
If so how would you tell which screen you are getting if buying one off Ebay or from the HP Outlet?

There is somebody on Ebay that has a 8740W with the Dreamcolor 1.0 so I'm wondering if he changed the screen or it came that way?

I would get the 8760W but understand that they aren't available in the 1920 x 1200 configuration.

I would say this is a case of buyer-beware. Since the original Dreamcolor (1) panel was never offered on the 8740w, the Ebay offering is either a typo, i.e. an 8730w instead of an 8740w, or is an 8740w with the DC(1) screen installed by the owner.

Also, I do not believe the DC(1), a RGB-LED panel, was IPS. I seem to remember that only Lenovo, and possibly the fruit company, had available IPS panels for laptops that year. Not absolutely sure though.

Ok well this would lead to my next question.
Was one of the options for the 8740W the plain RGB-LED type 1900x1220 non-dreamcolor type screen?

What would the panel number be for the IPS type screen?

    Thanks for the info

I'm finding that it is very difficult to tell which of these notebooks have the dreamcolor display. I thought they would all be under part numbers such as XT913UA or XT911UTR but even these could be the regular 1920 x 1200 non-dreamcolor display.

Anyone have anyway to be sure on these?

hp themselves did not give the DC2 very user friendly descriptions with machines, the UVA or WVA part usually signifies its DC2.

There were no machines ever released with DC1 they aren't even pin for pin compatible with the 8740/8540. It will most likely be a TN panel.

The XT911UTR (R for REFURBISHED) can sometimes also have a TN panel, though this is quite uncommon for them to do so. the xt911ut is meant to have a DC2 according to the parts list for that specific number, but it does depend on where you are getting them. (some places can replace the screen with the much cheaper 1920x1200 TN Panel, you would need to check)

The XT913UA however is a dual core, and can have like 5 different screens in, ranging from 1440x900 to 1920x1200. It doesn't state DC2 specifically, seems it's a CTO upgrade only (customer specific order)

The only way to be sure, is to find out the part number of the screen they used, or in worst case, get them to actually boot the machine with MDA and it will tell you then screen manufacturer.

Don't let yourself be ripped off for paying a premium on a screen that *could* be DC2.

I think I figured out what the guy was trying to say.

He is saying that it is a 8740W with the dreamcolor 1.0 installed.
His logic is that it is the same panel used on the 8730W dreamcolor which I guess is true but it would not be a IPS panel.

Anyone know a good place to buy one of these?

    a machine with dreamcolor 2?

you're going to have to look hard, they are semi discontinued. You can get refurbs with DC2, for cheaper. it's tough now, but you can still pick them up.

HP still have stocks of the panels, but the ETA on getting them from the parts store or direct is 3-4 months

The HP Business outlet tells me that they have not seen a dreamcolor for at least a couple of years so there goes that idea.
