There was a sale on Newegg for Geil 8gb sticks. I spent ~$165 for three of them (two for me, one for my wife's netbook). I'm starting an MCITP Enterprise Server Admin course on the 28th, so it's likely I'll have multiple Windows guests running at the same time. That 16 gigs will certainly help!

You have to go into the BIOS at bootup before Windows starts up. It is there in one of the BIOS menu/features. Just go in and start searching the options because it has been too long for me to remember the exact option to click.

Is anyone else being given the option by the HP Assistant function that checks for new updates to download updated software for ATI video drivers when they don't actually have an ATI video chip? I am getting this on my i3 Sandy Bridge generation two with integrated Intel graphics. Odd.

Probably has a similar whitelist to the 2560P. See INFO: 2560P WWAN/WIFI whitelist. Someone would need to deconstruct the 4430s bios using PhoenixTool and identify the wifi card contained for a 100% accurate list.

With HD streaming and brightness set at 60% you should be looking at around 2:45-3 hours (with the standard 6-cell).

Good morning fellow users... Today I just wanted to do something which was in my mind before I purchased my 4530s... In a few words I wanted to watch some content from my 4530s to my Sony Bravia 32 inch with HDMI, So I bought a cable from e-bay now I am waiting for it to try out...

But Here's what I've been reading around...

Intel HD 3000's do not display well tru Hdmi to external monitors...!!??
Is this true ...erm I mean anyone here tried it out yet ?

Ok so I'm debating between the 4530s and an Asus...
One thing which is confusing me is that the specs show the probook as being much thinner (and relatively lighter) than most laptops. Yet when I read reviews here, on amazon or newegg, NO ONE mentions it... Some people mention it being lighter than the average laptop but no one seems to comment on the actual thickness. Is it actually thinner or did they just write the specs from the smallest point on the computer?

Specs say thickness=1.13" (2.87cm). That's actually significantly thinner than most yet no one comments on it. Is it noticeable?

Unfortunately there are none where I live so I can't go check it out. Size and portability (for a cheap price) are important to me as I travel somewhat and use Linux so I don't actually need an insane amount of power for what I do. However, if it's just as thick as the average laptop I think I'll go with the Asus as it gives a lot more bang for your buck in terms of power vs the extra thickness+weight. I travel, but once somewhere I basically use my laptop as a desktop (meaning I don't carry it everywhere or go in coffee shops with it).

    Here are the two:

What kind of problems have you read about? Specific for TV screens or any kind of display?
My 4530 with intel hd 3000 card has had no problems with a hdmi-connected external monitor (eizo) in 1920x1080 resolution. Works great both in windows and linux environments for all desktop work and movies that I've tried.
Haven't connected the computer to any regular TV-screen with hdmi ports yet so I can't say anything about that type of scenario.

I found some info that there were problems the HD3000 lessering the quality when connected with a TV from hdmi... and they concluded it was
from the pci-chipset on the intel forums. Even some other brands not HP.
Your model has an ATI chipset too or just HD 3000 like mine ?

OK 2 hours ago I received my hdmi 1.4 cable ... installed and all working good ... phew
Just 1 question tho , can I make my lappy screen go black while in cloning mode cause when laptop screen goes sleep or dims the same does the TV... Since they are in seperate rooms can't move mouse in front of tv only in front of laptop.

On my tv it works if you switch them regularly using Fn+F4 and switch it projector only. If not, then I'm sure there are programs out there that would do the trick :D

[I hope I'm following proper 'thread starting protocol' here.
I posted the following question to HP Tech Support, HP notebook forum and Windows forum: no help whatsoever, no attempt at an answer.
I am no expert, but I think the answer to this is probably staring me in the face. The knowledge base here is mind blowing to me, maybe someone can help me with this, thanks!]

I have a new HP ProBook 4530s laptop running Windows Prof 64 bit.

This laptop is only 4 months old, but the hard drive is failing, according to constant notifications, and repeated BIOS hard drive diagnostic tests.

I wanted to be sure that all back-up/system restore precautions were taken. Not much to 'back-up' because the laptop is new. The standard 'back-up' was easily done on a 4 GB flash drive.

I followed instructions for 'create a system image' in order to make a 'copy of the drives required to restore your computer if your hard drive or computer ever stops working' (instructions right on the page).

I wanted to create this 'system image' on an external flash drive. First attempt at storing a system image failed because: 'the drive is not formatted with NTSF. The G flash drive was easily formatted to NTSF. Repeated attempts at copying now failed because: 'the drive is not a valid back-up location' (!?).

I see absolutely no clear reason why a 'computer image' cannot be created on a flash drive that has been correctly formatted.

HP Tech Support claims that the reason for this is a 'Windows incompatibility with the program' (used to create a 'system image?).

No solution was given. According to HP Tech Support, this is now a 'Windows software problem', which doesn't make any sense to me.

Standard CD-R data disks (the only ones I have on hand now) are not big enough: 700 MB capacity, but a DVD-R data disk, which has 4.7 GB capacity, may not be enough (especially in the future) for the creation of a 'system image'.

Can anyone tell me what the deal here is please? Thanks!

Hmm. How old is the USB drive? I'm pretty sure you should be using an external hard-drive and maybe that's why windows just detects it as a USB.
And for tech support, I would never call HP unless it was for sure a hardware problem....all manufacturers like to refer to Microsoft for problems...

But that said, I would try an external hard-drive (doesn't even need to be that big) and give her a shot.....worked well for me.

Hope that helped and post back!

Just some info to add ... don't use 2.5 inch Hdd which use two usb ports...I encountered some problems with them seems windows 7 has writing issues in it self. Just go with a 1 usb drive its better (powered from socket outlet)

You are absolutly right VA1 ... I was cloning the screen so either a 3rd party programm or just go with projector mode. The 2nd option was my choice...I only had to do the little x 2 walk from room to room before I setled on my couch enjoying some movies !!

Can you tell me what the 'difference' is between memory storage on a USB flash drive (I bought a new 32 GB stick just for this purpose) and an external hard drive (other than expense)?
I'm just trying to complete this one recommended procedure; I don't have massive files that need to be stored elsewhere. 320 GB of memory is more than enough for me.

So I did some quick research and apparently you cannot supposedly create a system image on a flash drive. ( Where should I save my backup?)

Of course the are plenty of 3rd party software that could do it on a USB, but personally I would return the 32gb USB and buy a small (say 320gb) external hard-drive. You can buy a 320gb-500gb HDD for pretty much the same as a 32gb USB.

Difference between USB flash drive and HDD is that a USB flash stick is solid state meaning it has no moving parts. Speeds are much faster compared to an HDD and they are less prone to failure (usually last longer) but are much more expensive. HDD's are cheaper and have many moving parts in comparison but generally offer much more space.

That being said, I would suggest getting a HDD to create that image.

VA1: Thanks very much, that nails the question definitively for me, and for the Windows link.
I must have spent a few hours checking one page after the other on Windows help, concerning recovery, system image, etc, but didn't come across this page.

When in BIOS, go to System Configuration, then go to "Device Configurations" and you will find turn on/off fan option in the list...

    Hope this was useful...

The "fan always on in a/c power" option is also available with BIOS F.0A
Have been reluctant to upgrade to F.20 since that version is not possible to downgrade (just in case). The only so called enhancement is the BIOS update process itself, from HP website:
"Provides improved security for the BIOS flashing process. NOTE: After this BIOS update has been installed, previous BIOS versions cannot be installed"

But some reports with trouble waking the computer from sleep and even worse fan speeds with F.20. Can anyone confirm this or any other detected issues?

    Updated f.09 to f.20
I had no problem updating it and I am pretty sure you can jump back a previous BIOS version (I see the option in my BIOS). However, I still see no option for fan speed or even system config for that matter...

Thanks :) , Yes I used an hdmi cable...The tv is a bravia hd ready meaning it displays 720p or 1080i. Only drawback is that refresh rate is only 30 hertz not 60 but still i viewed some hd content with no hassle. I am loving this laptop even more with its great features.

    Hey guys.
I just installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64-bit as my primary OS on my 4530s...
Anyway, everything worked great... All drivers for Windows 7 worked fine except the GPU driver since it is switchable... Anyway I managed to get it working: first install the original VGA driver from HP site (for Windows 7) and then install AMD Catalyst for Windows 8 CP and it all works just fine (you can find it on AMD.com ...
Also tried it my HDTV via HDMI and it all works just fine...

You have tutorial integrated in Synaptics software how to use these stuff such as scrolling, rotating images, how to slide images and regarding vertical and horizontal scrolling...
Anyway if you have not installed Synaptics driver you can find it here (this driver is for Windows 7 64-bit):

SSD will increase battery life a little but the biggest improvement is how much faster and snappier your system will run.

I've been using SSD for all my computers for over a year and I seriously can't switch back to HDD. It's just too slow.

I concur with wyemarn. There's nothing like the speed of an SSD, especially if you've also maxed out your RAM.

    Hey all,

First post here. I'm contemplating whether or not to get a 15.6" 4530s, and I need a little input.

First, a little background. My current laptop is 3-year-old HP Compaq 6830s, which still works, but is starting to show its age, and running a bit on the hot side (but better now that I smartened up and got a laptop cooler). 3 Gb RAM, P8400 Core 2 Duo at 2.26 Ghz, running XP Pro.

I'm a medical transcriptionist, so I have a good keyboard and mouse to use. The company I work has set up a virtual machine on my current rig, and from inside there, I connect to a VPN. Trying to run a virtual machine on 512 Mb RAM can make for a bit of a laggy experience.

Beyond this, I also use my laptop to listen to music, surf the web, watch youtube, do some home movies sometimes, stuff like that.

So anyway, I'm considering this laptop, the i5 model. Here are some of my thoughts so far:
    - Reliability. It appealed to me that this machine is HP's business line, and that it has an aluminum body. Can anyone give me more detail?
-Longevity. I'd prefer something that I didn't have to replace for several years. I guess this is connected with reliability.
-Ability to handle several tasks at the same time, smoothly, including the virtual machine. If the baseline 4 Gb RAM comes a little short, I'm pretty confident that I'm tech savvy enough to get some more and install it.
-I don't really play any demanding games.
-I realize the battery life isn't the greatest. I'm not too worried about that, for my purposes.

So, what do you all think? Would you recommend something different for my purposes, or would this one work fairly well for me? Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Davis

Yeah, that update showed up in my list as well, and mine doesnt have the ATI chip, just the integrated graphics. I didnt install it and I just clicked ignore on it because I wasnt sure what it was.

Since no one touts, I will (try to) add something from my experience...
Well looking at the list of your needs, I think 4530s would fit your needs... Since you do not need dedicated GPU, you will be more than satisfied with Intel HD3000 which comes integrated in CPU (especially when it comes to battery life)...
Regarding CPU, if you are planning to use it for several years than go straight for quad-core Core i7 version...
Regarding RAM, well, mine came with 4GB in one slot so I can easily add 2 or 4 GB more...But for now I am good with 4GB...
And when it comes to HDD, you can go with SSD upgrade but again check what meets your needs...
Regarding build quality, I am very happy with it... It seems tough enough and at the same time very stylish, especially the brushed aluminum part...And it is quite light to carry around (compared to my old Acer Aspire 5520G which almost always "broke my back" :) )...
I hope you will find this useful... ;)
    Cheers

Totally Agree and I must add also that this laptop upgrades to 16gb of Ram, unofficialy from HP but tried and tested on this and another forum as well. Like Arminator said an SSD upgrade would push this machine to greater performance. That says it all...
