    this tool should be working on atleast those laptops since they have the exact same bios.

    HP ProBook 4230s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4330s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4331s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4430s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4431s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4530s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4730s Notebook PC

    on other laptops, the probook tool might work, but there is a probabilty that it might need some custom settings.
    reading this thread from the start should give you an idea about how to know those settings on your own laptop.

    Byte 50 of my EC is definately gpu temp.

    It changes woth the gpu temp and corresponds to the correct value

    Do you know why it doesnt stick though?

    Is there anything that can be done ?

    Does anyone have any idea as to whether this would work for for an AMD based 4535s? Thanks.

    when the gpu temps were at 70c, what was the temp of the cpu cores?

    anyway,

    I do not recommend running a fan control software when there is something generating 70c.
    I do not recommend running any fan control while enabling any dedicated card.

    Use this fan control for up to 55c~60c max or so (imo).

    Do you think we can modify the bios directly. Like hex edit the bios as the bios should contain the EC thats flashed.

    We then just flash a modifed bios with modified EC ?

    did you get a chance to look at actual cpu cores temps at that time ?

    i am really interested in knowing how was the cpu doing at that time, since the cpu and gpu share the same heat sink and fan.

    we just need to edit the acpi file, which should be better than all those tools imo, but we cant find someone who knows how to do it.

    Where in the acpi file does it show that the fan turns on when it reaches 40c ?

    You could easily help us find out.

    - download aida64 and RW.
    - open aida at sensors page, open the EC in RW and look at byte 38 - http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/4600/eccputempbyte.jpg
    - Start editing it to find out at what temp the fan turns off. Use Binary/Decimal/Hexadecimal Converter. 31c (1f) is the temp where the 4530s turns the fan off.
    - Observe in the EC byte 47 (2f). It controls the fan speed and you can edit it in RW. Try that and see if it works.

    Same as above. Just help us test! It takes 1 minute to find out if you can lock the cpu temp by editing byte 38 in the EC and change the fan speed by mainipulating byte 47. Supereasy.... :cool:

    Don't waste your time. It takes someone who works with this stuff to help.

    The tool that we test these days (ProBook FanControl) reads the real CPU temp and displays it in the tray icon. If you want to monitor more temps, just have aida64 open at sensors page. It has all the info you need.

    Let us know if what i wrote at post 58 works for your model.

    jhonq do you know why byte 38 and byte 50 don't display the cpu temp or gpu temp if you haven't opened aida64 ?

    From a shutdown if you startup the pc and open rw everything byte 38 and byte 50 do not relate to the cpu temp or gpu temp, its static value .

    Seems weird

    Thanks for replying jhonq, but I don't have the 4535s yet. In fact I've been following your progress on this for a few weeks and reading yours and others posts here and elsewhere while I've been saving up for a new laptop, and while I really want a 4535s this controllable fan issue is a deal breaker to be honest, as I really can't stand any fan noise at idle or low loads. It would almost drive me as insane as having a glossy screen!
    So I guess my question will remain unanswered until either someone tests this on an AMD machine, or I risk buying one and do it myself!

    As i've said many times on this topic, the values for cpu temp (byte 38) and gpu temp (byte 50) are SOMETIMES "stuck" after a standby, maybe at restarts and i've seen it even at cold boots! The issue is known and under investigation!.

    To fix this and have them unstuck, a tool that "fingers" those values using ACPI is needed, like aida. I have also tested NHC with the same succes as aida.

    That is why i post this again, untill something will be implemented in ProBook fan control to wake those values:

    For proper use of the new tools and to activate the ability to turn off the fan, users MUST start aida64 and open sensors page, at every cold boot, maybe restart, and after a standby. You can close aida64 after it "wakes" the ec for proper byte 38 editing.

    lazydave80, as posted here, the 4530s shares a bios with these series:

    HP ProBook 4230s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4330s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4331s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4430s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4431s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4530s Notebook PC
    HP ProBook 4730s Notebook PC

    It's not a guarantee that the 4535s EC works the same way, but i quess it must be similar.

    I wrote post 58 and with that info, any hp user can open the EC in RW and observe where the cpu temp byte is and if editing it to something low sticks!

    Easy...

    Yeah, thanks again jhonq. I don't see why it shouldn't work but I'll have to decide whether it's worth getting the 4535s as it might not.
    I'll keep an eye on this thread anyway as it's great seeing things unfold, and I might get lucky if a 4535s owner happens to come along... :)

    Offtopic : I i were you, i would stay away from that model or any other model in the similar series. Just for oane reason. The screen is craaaappy. Sure, most 1366x768 screens suck, but this one is particularly bad. Washed out colors etc. You just have to look at it next to a random sony for example and you would run away.

    Hp is cheap but you get what you pay for. Meh, i guess that's what we have this for...

    Yeah, I have read about the poor screen quality. There is sample variance though and there are many videos and pictures online of screens on both the 4535s and the 4530s that I'd be more than happy with. As long as it's legible and ok for a bit of light gaming. Matte is the most important thing. I hate anything glossy as much as I hate intrusive fan noise!

    BTW sorry for keeping things off topic. I'll stop bothering you now! Good luck with your fan control guys!

    i do not know how much heat does the amd processor produce, that is the main point,
    so how much will you be able to control the fan depends mainly on that.

    the screen imo is not that bad, its fine, not the best, but atleast it is not shiny.

    Found a very simple and effective solution to the "stuck EC" issue. It involves having AIDA64 load at startup with a temp tray icon. Just follow my lead and trust me, it will not bother you at all!

    1. Open aida preferences, go to general and set it just like you see in the next picture:

    [IMG]

    2. Hit apply and go to "Sensor Icons", tick "Show sensor icons", clear all and select just one randon sensor from Temperatures (i went with CPU Package), hit configure if you like some other text color etc and apply.

    [IMG]

    3. The end result where we see the big blue icon (HPFC) and a smaller black one (AIDA).

    [IMG]

    4. Hide what you don't like/need...

    [IMG]

    5. Profit! :cool:

    jhong, where can I download the HPFanControl you are using? I'm currently using TP FanControl for Thinkpads, which works, but not perfectly, currently I'm using the manual mode at 255, which makes it almost silent in idle, but the lack of control is frustrating, I would like to try yours.

    THIS IS IT!

    The final version is live.

    HPFanControl by troubadix - Scroll to the download area and you will find the link to download HPFanControl. All the info needed is inside the .ini and on this thread.

    Please send a shout-out or some $ via paypal to troubadix, as he wasted time for us, making his two year old thinkpad tool compatible with our HP!

    jhonq so I am quite confused.

    Can you please explain what the differences are between Probook FanControl by Grantig and HPFanControl by troubadix ?

    Do they both still need aida64 open ?

    Thanks

    @jhonq,

    Great work, thanks for the testing and following up with them, you have done great stuff :)

    and obviously thanks for troubadix

    Working fine so far.

    a hint:
    disabling one of the cpu cores , reduces heat significantly.
    highly recommended if sitting in a an area with high ambient temp.

    disabling hyper threading does not make a big effect, but could still help a little bit ..

    some approximate results:

    1 core + 2 threads with 100% cpu usage,
    produces the same watt usage of
    2 cores + 4 threads with 20% cpu usage.

    closing 1 core, fan off, results in around a lower temp by up to 5c.

    No need to be confused! :D

    Both tools try to get the same common sense outcome ---> Let the user decide at what temp to start the fan, with what speed, when to increase/decrease fan speed and when to turn it off.

    This is the luxury we now have, as anyone can test them (soon for ProBook Fancontrol) and stick with the one they enjoy most. Maybe HPFC has more options in the .ini, like automatic tray icon color change when the temp gets to certain levels etc. For example, as it's default set, TPFC has a blue text icon. At 56C the icon turns magenta and at 70C gets red. :cool:

    Yes, as of now, BOTH tools require AIDA64 to work issue free at cold boots/after standby. That's why we have post 68, with easy to follow instructions on how to autostart to tray.

    Remember, read the HPFC .ini for options description and how to set it up!

    --------------------

    I would not disable one core or hyper threading, unless idle temps are something like over 60 (mine are ~48-50C for the i3 2350) and you realy want it fanless.

    ----------------------

    The default fan settings (user changable in the .ini) are like this:

    Level=50 255
    Level=56 128
    Level=65 82
    Level=70 74
    Level=75 59
    Level=80 49
    Level=82 0

    The fan starts at the lowest speed (128) when cpu temp gets to 56C and turns off when it drops to 50C. As the .ini explains, you can easily chose at what temp to start the fan, just use common sense!

    jhonq thanks for the explanation.

    I think the way probook fan control calculates cpu temperature is better, as its more robust, than using the gpu temp.

    Also I'm sure fan level 128 doesnt exist.

    The lowest fan speed I could get was 88 which is 58 in hex . When you set byte 47 in RW everything to something higher than 88 the fan never reaches this.

    Byte 46 shows the current fan speed and this always stops at 58 in hex which is 88.

    So I think the lowest fan speed is 88 and the only other one above this is 255 which is off

    jhonq you can check this with RW everything you will see byte 46 in EC doesnt go above below hex value of 58

    Also maximum speed of fan is 44, which in hex is 2C

    Hmmm, seems to work, not sure if I need Aida, but I got the HP Fancontrol working, manual setting at 255 is nice and quiet, the fan is not off, but very low, and the temperatures are fine, do I need RW? And how do I start the Fancontrol automatically after restart?

    It's the same thing if the EC is woken by aida. GPU temp is reliable for models with the gpu inside the cpu.

    Meh, minor detail. Just tested and it's like this: 128 manual setting in HPFC reports a "35 RPM", while setting the fan to 88 state reports "37 RPM" and i can FOR SURE hear the fan spin a little faster. So yeah, fan level 128 exists for my 4530s. Might be some minor differences with your model.

    Again, byte 46 must be used with an interpreter, so just ignore it as most of the info it displays is usless for now.

    either 2310m or 2350m, when on power saving ( @0.8ghz ) they are exactly the same,
    my problem is the really hot ambient temp at some times,
    light load can push the temps easily to over 62c,
    disabling one core was the only way i could achieve 55~60 under light load.

    at the moment, sitting in a well aired place, light load temps is around 51~55.

    No need to disable cores and cripple performance. Just edit the ini to start the fan at 63C (or later) and turn it off when it drops to 57.

    First two lines should look like this:

    Level=57 255
    Level=63 128 (or 88, whatever fan speed you've found is the lowest for your model)

    Easy! :cool:

    Yup, I am still trying to figure out the right balance between cool/quite/performance.

    I heard of something called "Core Parking" which should allow disabling the extra cores when not needed using windows power profiles, still havn't got them working yet, and there isn't enough documents to read about them, or to verify if core parking is available for Core i3 and not just the high ends i7.

    I did work for a bit with both dual core and hyper threading DISABLED, but the performance decrease was ridiculous, so i enabled HT, and now the snappiness is back.

    TBH I prefer having the fan off for longer periods, than to get that extra bit of performance that I do not need for what I currently do, just some browsing, emailing, a little bit of coding (reading and editing files), but when i start to require some virtual machines, i might have to enable the fan a bit, even if just at 128.

    some of the newer ati should have switchable graphics with intel's built-in one, should be possible to disable the ati gfx from windows, and if that didn't work, should be able to disable them from bios.

    As far as I know, it's not possible to disable the ATI GPU, but AIDA can see the fan for the GPU, so it must be possible to control it somehow.

    During normal use where I don't stress the GPU at all, the fan control works fine, I got a nice silent notebook, which is not even hot, but as soon as I play a full HD video, specially when connected to my TV, then the fan goes wild, and stays that way, until the movie is over.

    Does the Elitebook 8760w have integrated graphics also ?

    If you switch to integrated graphics the fan should stay off

    Also the fan doesnt turn on until the GPU temp gets to about 70C .
    So if you managed to keep the fan off I reckon your GPU will probably explode

    I dont suppose its possible the fan to spin slower than 128.

    I guess this is the slowest it can go ?

    Hello, i found fan noise issue very anoying on my 4330s. HPFanControl worked, but it has many bugs and i dont want to risk to burn my laptop when it disables real CPU temp (changes it to 31, but i dont need to shut my fan off). So i need some help. Sometimes i change fan speed to slowest manualy with Read & Write Utility, but if someone could write a simple bat or compile program to change it when executed it would be really great. My idea is to execute it with speedfan from events section when certain temp is reached. I tryed to do it by my self, but my programming skills are realy poor. I think for those who know, it shouldnt be hard to create those simple tasks with HPFanControll source code.I also need a reset bat, which sets 47 bit to 255.
    And sorry for my poor English.

    Poulius, HPFanControl works very well and can do whatever you like. The problem is with speedfan. That progam has a service started that messes with the EC and causes inteference. I advise to unistall it.

    Just read the HPFancontrol.ini. You can edit in the ini hp32start=00. This way the program will not set a fake cpu temp, ever and the fan will not turn off!

    From there, just look at the levels section in the .ini and you can set them as you like. You can have the fan spin at the lowest speed all the time, and when the temperature reaches something like 60C, make it spin a little faster. At 65C faster and so on... It's ridiculously easy, you just have to read!

    The problem is, that sometimes when it sets temp to 31, fan can be turned of and sometimes not. But its not the biggest problem, if it succeed and turn off fan, the next time i boot it doesn't reset that bit value, and fan is not spinning at all. That means it doesn't register my cpu temp and don't turn fan on. If i don't react to this, i think it could be equal to burned laptop. That's why i don't prefer changing cpu temp bit. By the way, if i unplug power, everything resets.
    When i change bit values manually, same strange happens, sometimes fan can be turned off with 255 value, and sometimes it resets its speed to normal with this value despite that cpu temp is set to 31. This is my feedback what i see wrong with this software. And the other thing, when i set in ini file HP32start=00, log shows that HPFC is sending this value to 38 bit, as i understand this means every second my cpu temp gets reset? Am i right? And i don't prefer smart mode, because it sets fan speed by gpu temp, and sometimes my cpu gets 70 celsius and fan doesn't start. This is why i wanted do do it with speedfan and simple speed programs. Or maybe there is a way to keep real cpu temp and calculate fan speed with it?
    By the way thanks for fast response ;]

    It seems there is a bug if hp32start=00. The value gets sent over an over. Will notify the author.

    As i have advised, please uninstall speedfan an stop using it. Read my post here and have aida autostart to tray. That way if you set fake cpu temp to 31, it will reset ok when TPFC closes.

    So how do you want to set it up? You want the fan to be on all the time at the lowest speed and increase at a certain temp?

    It would be nice it could stop when cpu is cold, but as i already said, i don't want to change to fake cpu temp. So i would be happy, if it could adjust speed by CPU temp, not GPU at bit 50. That's all i want for now. I wanted to make speedfan do exact same thing i mentioned here.

    The only problem is with speedfan, as i have explained. If you remove it, you can fake cpu temp with no worry. When HPFC closes it will reset it for sure. Just use aida to monitor all the temps.

    You will not be able to keep the fan off if you don't fake the cpu temp.

    We need to find out what AIDA64 does and implement it into one of the fan programs.

    AIDA64 takes ages to start up and detect sensors

    I am still asking if someone could create shortcuts to change 47 bit to these parameters (if possible invisible cmd windows):
    255 = 0xff
    128 = 0x80
    82 = 0x52
    74 = 0x4a
    65 = 0x41
    59 = 0x3b
    49 = 0x31
    0 = 0x00
    I am sure it could work with speedfan, just need to make events where it executes necessary shortcut.
    If needed i will compile it by my self, i only need code sample which changes 47 bit value.. :/

    Have you follwed my guide on setting up aida load to tray? I takes ~10 seconds to load from a cold boot and it's IMPOSIBLE to notice it if you hide the tray icons from windows. I know how long it take to load because i can se the HPFC tray icon show 20C at boot, as the EC has the GPU temp stuck. After 10 seconds aida loads in the baground and the gpu temp is read right and all is perfect. Yeah, it would be nice if the tools could send those acpi commands, but that's all we got now.

    You still don't get it that speedfan is the issue here? That is the reason HPFC can't reset fake cpu temp on exit. First, you can't have the fan off (ff) if you dont fake the cpu temp! So if wou allways want the fan on at lowest speed, just download tpfc_v062.zip, start it in manual mode with 128 speed and that is that. But you just missed the whole point of what this thread is about...

    If you just read the .ini and follow the steps i have explained, you can use safely the latest version of HPFC as it will not burn your laptop, and will keep your fan off llong persiod of tiems.

    Can you read what i need? I need a simple code. Don't blame speedfan, it has nothing to do with it.. And i have read all the ini. I have already modified it. Yes aida64 helps to prevent reset fail, but its not about that, i want to use speedfan instead of tons of other apps which could crash and ruin my laptop. HPFC is awesome but it just don't have simple features i need like fan control by cpu temp (not GPU temp which acts differently). Don't try to understand why i need it, just understand what i need because that's what i ask and if it is not possible then say instead of accusing me of being stupid.

    First of all:

    - There is no simple code for what you want. You can't just have "invisible cmd windows" to send commands to the EC. It's way more complicated than that. You would have to write an application from scratch. No one will bother with that.

    Does your laptop have a dedicated gpu or not? If the answer is no, gpu temp = cpu temp, all the time. So it's a very reliable value to use for fan control.

    I blame speedfan for everyting. I have tested the tools with it started and it caused issues with writing to the EC. Uninstaling it made everything perfect. It can also crash and ruin your laptop, if we start thinking like that.

    hm :/ I thought it is not big deal to make it, i even tried to edit TFFC source code by my self. Ok im giving up for now. Waiting for new release of HPFC ;] BTW is this a bug? log:

    Yeah, that's the bug when hp32start=00. It will be fixed in the next release, at the and of next week.

    However, the whole point of the program IS to fake the cpu temp value, by having hp32start at something like 31, as this is the ONLY way we can keep the fan off.

    I understand what you want to make with speedfan events, but the sad thing is (as i've said like 5 times :) ) speedfan installs a service that fingers the EC all the time, causing issues when other programs want to write to the EC. If you would uninstall it and set hp32start=31, you would see that at exits, the fake cpu value will be reset 100% of the time.

    You didn't answer. Do you have a dedicated gpu inside the machine or not?

    No graphics. GPU temp is same as CPU, my mistake, sorry.
