So I get it that Windows-based setting is persistent. It is done once and then the system on every reboot detects the mouse connected and automatically disables touchpad. If so then it is perfect solution for me.
Thank you very much for your kind help.
Ted.

I'm planning to buy ZBook 17 G4 with 4K DC screen. There is no NC review yet and the feedback is scarce. If there are owners of G3/G4 with 4K DC, could you please tell how good/bad the screen is for gaming and watching video? I heard that modern DC screen is worse than G2 DC in terms of brightness and colors but I wonder if it is any good being compared to the modern home/gaming laptops. What about the response times? I know it's kinda ridiculous to buy a workstation for films and gaming, but the thing is there aren't many decent 17" notebooks out there at all and most of them are gaming laptops with poor build quality, glossy screens and so on.
On a separate note, does anybody know if HP workstations officially supports Linux? I have little doubt that Ubuntu can be installed on any notebook, but I wonder if there are any compatibility problems with proprietary drivers or HP software on Linux. -

I haven't gotten mine yet as they are still building it up. But I am going to give a review in comparison to the G3 both fully stacked.
Redhat is HPs official professional Linux build. They have their own deb unit.soodesune likes this. -
I looked at the specifications and can not understand why HP has indicated DisplayPort ™ 1.2 in the new G4 laptops with HP Pascal graphics?
link
http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-zbook-17-g4-mobile-workstation-(energy-star)-p-1nl44ut-aba--1
1 RJ-45; 1 USB 3.0 (charging); 2 USB 3.0
1 power connector; 2 USB Type-C™ (Thunderbolt™ 3, DisplayPort™ 1.2, USB 3.1); 1 HDMI 2.0; 1 headphone/microphone combo; 3 USB 3.0; 1 VGA
This is obviously some kind of mistake .. the Pascal graphics card supports the output of DisplayPort ™ 1.4 -

Maybe for the mobile version it is only 1.2. But I will have a check with the lead techs and ask for you.

So yesterday I finally received my ZBook 17 G4 DC. Today I've already left it at the local HP service center. The problem? Severe backlight bleeding at four different places. I don't have photo, but it looked like this: The guy who uploaded the video says he bought 9 of them and all had the same problem. Given that, I wonder if the local HP service could help me at all. I'm not sure if they can get a spare DC panel and even if they can, who says that new panel wouldn't be defective as well? If the service guys say they can't or won't replace the panel, I'm not sure if I should take the money back or just keep it as it is. After all the backlight bleeding while annoying isn't something you see all the time (it is visible only on black background and only in dark environment). I just don't like using a defective product, buy maybe it's the new normal nowadays?

Yikes I hope my one isn't like that at all. Sorry to hear about it. Can you not get them to service it where you are
-
I bought the notebook from a reseller. They can neither exchange nor service it. All they can do is take it back and return the money. But I'm more interested in keeping the notebook, just replacing the screen. So I contacted the authorized HP service partner. They took the notebook and in a day or two they will report back if they can help or not.

To anyone who switched to a G3/G4 from a G2: How happy are you with the newer ZBooks? I currently have a fully loaded 17 G2 and I'm not terribly convinced by the new ones. Cheaper build and more compromises feel like the biggest drawbacks compared to the G2, which is a freaking tank. I'm also considering a Thinkpad P70/P71 as my next work laptop.
-
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
I agree that the builds for the g2 were much better and more solid. I'm sure if you opened the g2 out and threw the guts in it from a g4 it would be perfect
-
I would stick with my G1 but I need Thunderbolt 3 and 64GB ram support.
Like you said if only we could stick the G3/4 guts into the G1/2 shell. -
I see both the ZBook 17 G4 and the P71 in the upcoming reviews section on the site. I suggest you just wait for those detailed reviews to make a decision. Prior to purchasing ZBook 17 G4 I also thought about P71 and from the limited information I could get on P71 I figured out that it's easily even more a mess than the G4. P71 has the same Panasonic screen as P70. It has worse color specs than Sharp IGZO screens of the Dreamcolor G3/G4 and the backlight bleeding is also a common thing on P70 (still probably not as common as on the G4, where it seems to be ubiquitous). As for the build quality in general I seriously doubt than Lenovo can actually be ahead of HP, however only the detailed review or side by side comparison can tell for sure.

do you know this poll?
How do you want your next laptop to be built?
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/how-do-you-want-your-next-laptop-to-be-built.808062/ -
Just what I expected, thanks guys. Guess I'll stick with this G2 until the bitter end
I really want to try a Thinkpad P71, but the P70 seemed riddled with issues as far I remember.
-
Is it just me - or is the newer ZBook 17s, e.g. G3 onwards with IPS more likely to have screen bleed/imperfections than the earlier generations? Have not had as many screen issues with ZBook 15 G1/G2 before.
Sent in the 2nd 17 G3 with some backlight bleeding from the office - HP first said no issues found - I sent them the photos. They kindly replaced it. However, when received there is still small backlight leak on the top. Much less noticeable than before, though - still there. This is after sending it in for repair! Probably call quits whilst I'm still ahead.Last edited: Oct 24, 2017 -
I consider switch to zbook G2 but as I check the model I want buy has i7 4710MQ. I dont think it will be much burst.

Just out of morbid curiosity - apparently the ZBook 17 G3's battery is affected by a recent recall (among other laptops).
Has anyone got HP to replace it? Seems to be alot of work to go through to book it (in the old days it was just a simple battery swap - now got to remove the back cover!) Then again keen not to come back to the office finding everything's burnt. -
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
Not all of them are affected by the bug. It's only a portion of them. They said the g4 would be too but we don't have any that us affected. I would check all the units with the app

Can anyone tell me when you laptop reaches 0rpm does your laptop make a very weird humming sound that sounds like it's still spinning. I'm on bios 1.15 and following the performance advisor. The only way I can completely shut down the cpu fan is with notepad fan control. 1988 seems to be HPs idle state and no lower with cpu being 28° only

Just got a Zbook 17 G3 last week looking to upgrade storage but have seen people with issues.
so my questions are
1. M2.0 NVMe drives which ones work or has this now been fixed via a BIOS update?
2. SATA 2.5" drives are there any issues with these or can you put any in?
for information spec of laptop is
Windows 7 pro
XEON E3-1535M V5
M2000M GPU
16GB ECC ram I have upgraded to 64GB ECC (Lenovo 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Memory)
laptops direct have a fantastic offer on this at moment £47.98 per 16GB only any good for XEON CPU though -
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
No issues with any 2.5 drives. I've put lots on mine and it was perfect. Nvme there has been various information regarding this and I haven't touch anything other than what's been supplied. The ECC ram should work on anything it just won't give the error correction

I dont know how many of you have seen the zbook 15u and zbook 14 ultrabook G5 online but if the 17 inch pans out that way i will leave HP for good. Very low quality graphics options and an ugly silver coating

Hi all, does anyone know whether ZBook G4 17 top assembly fit G3 17 ?
-

According to HP they fit spot on. All i did was switch the screen on mine though.

The screen i have is the one that came with the dreamcolor LQ173D1JW32 Sharp 4k screen. Its the same screen on both g3 and g4

Is originally had a g3 4k screen and replaced it with a g4 4k screen. As far as screens go i am sure you might need different cables. EvDs or Lvds. The dream color gas its own module.
