HP Zbook 15 G3 - FHD (SVA) - upgrade to UHD

Hi,
there was already a post about this issue, but the thread is closed already. So my current display is TN FHD SVA 15,6. It´s terrible (really bad viewing angles, low brightness, bad colors, flickering). I was thinking about upgrading. There is a better one - FHD UWVA, which is better, but I don´t think it´s worth the risk and time to upgrade to that one. There is also an UHD panel, which is brighter and even better. I use my computer as a workstation in my architecture studio (rhinoceros, photoshop etc..), so I would use 4K well, it´s also not very expensive - around 150USD.

The problem is, that FHD is connected with 30pin 13,5mm, but the UHD cable is 40pin 15,5mm. I guess it´s possible to replace that cable - if the male connector inserted into motherboard is the same. So the last thing, that could cause a problem is the dimensions of the panel itself.
I found a suitable panel on aliexpress, which is 15.6" LED LCD Screen LTN156FL02-101 4K UHD 3840x2160 PLS EDP 40PIN Display Slim. It shoud be compatible with HP and I found out it´s depth is 3.08mm. http://www.panelook.com/LTN156FL02-101_Samsung_15.6_LCM_overview_31519.html

So my questions are:
-anyone tried succesfully upgrading the screen?
-anyone at least replaced FHD screen or can measure somehow the width of the panel?
-do you know if the 40 pin cable is compatible with the board?
-any ideas on what could cause some more problems - power, compatibility?
-do you think that the panel I found is compatible? I could not even find a spare part number of the UHD panel.

The FHD UWVA panel upgrade is easy and takes all of 5 minutes. Just pop the bezel off, unscrew the existing screen mounts, lay it flat on the keyboard, unplug eDP connector, plug new one in and put it all back together.

For the UHD panel, they originally used a Sharp IGZO panel similar to what comes in the narrow bezel XPS 15. So it used extra mounting brackets that need to be installed into your existing display housing. The cable is also going to be of different length than the FHD panel because I believe the connector on the screen is in a different location than the FHD - and you have to be careful because the Sharp IGZO panel is the only one that has the connector in that location. Unfortunately HP only shipped the UHD panel as a complete unit to techs, so you cannot get individual spare parts like those brackets from them. You would have to get everything as a used pull from a salvage company or such.

Now, another option you could look into is the UHD panel on the Zbook 15 G4. I believe its a standard AUO B156ZAN2.0, and uses standard mounting brackets and the normal cable location. It also has even better specs than the Sharp IGZO (I really hate the anti-glare coating on the Sharp IGZO panel...). You would have to get the panel and the Zbook 15 G4 UHD cable, but otherwise it would be a drop in replacement. Oh, and if your display housing has a WWAN antenna installed, you would have to remove it likely as the UHD cannot fit otherwise.

 

Hi, sorry for long response time. I was deciding what to do next. I just ordered a new FHD screen to replace a current TN panel. You wrote to just pop the bezel off. Could you make me a favour and describe a little bit more how exactly should I do it? Can I use some of my plastic opening tools? There seems to be some kind of glue.. And the plastic is very soft, so I am really woried not to break it. Thanks!
