Currently i am looking beyween alienware 17 r4 and zbook 17 g4. At least proper repasting and repadding resolve heat issue for alienware. But i prefare workstations. So i will think i will give it try.
P.s. i also hate it. I think that laptops for such price should not have such problems.but for some reason conpanies prefer to use toothpaste instead of normal paste

Yeah there are a lot of people who repaste straight away when buying a product. Workstations are good but dont forget there are gaming workstations also
-
Yeah, you are right. But i do not like asus, msi and etc.
One more moment. Do you have dreamcolor display? Does it worth it? -
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
I do have a dreamcolor monitor but i will say this to anyone who wants to buy one and only if my opinion really mattered about the choice. DreamColor monitors are great but thr normal 4k monitors are th3 exact same. DreamColor is only a module attached onto the 4k screens to enable manual switching of colour profiles without hastle. If you are happy with a 4k ips with almost 100% argb. Then go for that.

Hi Chaps!
Looking into buying either a Zbook 17 G1 or G2, or a Dell M6800... My heart says G2, but my eyes tell me otherwise:
I've seen one G1, one G2, and 3 M6800's.. The G1 and one of the M6800 were okay, but the G2 and two of the M6800 had visible pixel columns (faint vertical lines basicly), which I guess comes down to the the manufacturer of the screen. Unfortunatelly the G1 was ugly on its outside (lots of scratches, delaminating screen bezel, etc.) and the 6800 has a poorish CPU and a K3100m.
Has anybody else experienced such on the HP's? Will my eyes ever adjust to it, or should I just avoid these panels because it will annoy the hell out of me everytime I look at it?!)
First I thought I'll get the G2 & upgrade the screen to DC, but after some reading I've learned that it's not too straight-forward / cheap.
Cheers! -

I remember reading a while back about some people having a constant high pitched sound and an occasional flicker on their ZBook G2 DreamColor screen. I've got the high pitched noise on mine, but I never saw any flickering until recently, when I started working with more black and gray backgrounds. It's not noticeable with a white background, but on a black/gray background I can see it happen maybe once a minute. A couple years ago I had HP replace the screen twice, and both replacements had the high pitched noise. Wonder how common these problems are.

Hey yall,
I hate to necro a dead thread, but I've got a dilemma.
I recently acquired a HP Zbook 17 G1 F7W21UT (yes, the Dreamcolor with the K5100m). I have updated to the latest HP bios available for it, L70 v 1.44 8/8/2018
I also recently purchased a Dell MXM GTX 970M to place inside a 8770w. I have not yet flashed any sort of bios on it. Here is the item, in case https://www.ebay.com/itm/123438242912
I attempted to install the above GPU into the system, but I am unable to get the system to boot at all. The UEFI bombs out and just sits there, zero attempts to get to the OS.
At this point, I am unsure if the GPU is actually dead, or if I am getting blocked by the UEFI. I've never encountered a scenario like this, where a BIOS/UEFI locks out video cards, so I'm as yet unsure what the symptoms are. My area of hardware modding expertise is more on the desktop than laptop side.
I am also completely unsure how I am going to flash anything onto the card if I can't even get the system to boot with it....
Can anyone assist? Should I start a new thread for this? If the GPU is indeed dead, I've got a couple days to return it at this point, so hopefully someone around here can assist.Last edited: Nov 27, 2018 -
I think you would have a better chance for an answer in the " Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades" forum

I'll post there then. Thanks!

Hi!
I have a silly question, exist the Zbook 17 G2 with out MXM card nvidia or AMD, only with the intel 4600?
The is one in the used computer store that in the device manager only appears the intel 4600.
Exist a version of the motherbaord without the mxm slot? or maybe simply someome strip the GPU.
Thanks! -

Anyone using a Zbook with a Thunderbolt G2/230W dock?
I have a Zbook 17 G5 with one and, while it looked like it would support 3 monitors well, it has all kinds of issues remembering monitor assignment, waking them all up (at the same time!), remembering where certain windows were when it went to sleep etc and is generally being a PITA.
I can post actual issues, but wanted to wait until I see if anyone else is using a similar setup. (I have an old Zbook 17 G2 with an Advanced Docking Station (mechanical dock, of course) which was fantastic and has never given a moment's trouble.
BTW - I **love** the G5 - great machine. Not so much the dock and its firmware. -
please write a review or make a youtube video review of ZBook 17 G5.
im also interested with this model.
did you buy customized or pre-configured? -
please make a review here or on youtube about 17 G5. -
Hello! I'm thinking of getting one of these laptops to replace my Hp Elitebook 8760w. I know you can upgrade the GPUs in these laptops. I have experience with upgrading the GPUs in the 8760w. I was wondering if all of the the displays are LVDS or if they are all eDP, or is it a mixture of both like LVDS on some panels, eDP on others?
Edit: I was thinking of also getting a G3 model, but the one I can afford is only an i5 model. Also, will my old power brick work with the newer models? -
I have a 17 G3 with a quadro m1000m and a TN 1600x900 (I think it is LVDS, but i am not sure). I like the machine, but that display is not good.. Look for the fullHD ones and up.
Recently I have been looking for a GPU upgrade. The GTX 980m apparently is mostly plug and play and hassle free, but there is success with the 1060 with minor issues as well. I am not sure if the 1060 will work with my 1600x900 display, though.. -

Hi Folks,
I just converted my G1 ZBook 17 to DreamColor. Yaaay! It was scary, but less painful than I feared…..the whole process was completed in a single morning. The most difficult task by far (!!) was sourcing the two cables and the decoding board. It took me almost two years to research and to hunt down those parts. The decoding board is becoming impossible to find, even in China. The seller only had one in stock.
My problem now, is how best to calibrate the display. HP discontinued the DreamColor Calibration Solution (part B1F63AA) recently, so I have a couple of questions to those who know better:
1. Will an open OEM X-Rite i1Display Pro work with the X-Rite HP Calibration Tool 2.2.0? I know that there are three versions of the i1d3 (retail, open OEM, and proprietary OEM) of which the HP DCS is supposedly the last, but is it? I suppose I will be told to test it, but I can’t just yet because the calibrator is still on its way to me. Does HP use a different unlock code for its OEM i1d3?
2. If hardware calibration fails, I suppose that I can still rely on ArgyllCMS to calibrate the GPU, but how do others feel about this?
3. Is the HP Mobile Display Assistant 3.05 good enough? It’s basic, but the display looks acceptable with it.
On a related note, I see that the Nvidia control panel refuses to allow the selection of 10 bits per channel mode on my Quadro. My impression was that the DreamColor panel is 10 bits and so is the Quadro. Is it the cabling? There is an eDP connector on the motherboard, but it has to go through the decoding board in the lid. Perhaps the signal is degraded there somehow? -
Following up from my first post, I can report that the open OEM X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter arrived. I tested it with the HP Calibration Tool, but unfortunately it does not work. Apparently, I need the proprietary OEM HP device, which is no longer available. I then tried the Mobile Display Assistant, but was very (!!) disappointed with it. It’s too basic and inaccurate for my liking.
So, I calibrated the display with ArgyllCMS, and the results are awesome! It achieved close to 99% coverage in both SRGB and Adobe RGB with an average dE of 0.17! Kudos to DreamColor technology, and to ArgyllCMS for accuracy.
The 10 bpc problem also sorted itself out when I rolled back the graphics driver. I am pleased overall. The effort was well worth it. -
So i finally bought HP ZBook 17 G2!
What a piece of art.
Beautiful machine i must say.
Specs:
i7 4910mq
nVidia Quadro k5100m 8gb
16 GB of looks like crappy samsung 800mhz ddr3
And terrible hdd 500 gb ,noisy one
Screen:Looks like TN Full Hd 3d?
It is so so...
I replace hdd with kingstone hyperx 256gb ssd with win 10 on it from my hp 8560w and just backup drivers so now working like a charm...
I read a lot abbout hp z turbo drive m.2 pcie ssd and i allready have headacke..
What abbout Dream color panel update?
What abbout GTX 1070 or 1060?
To be perfectly honest quadro k5100m is perfectly capable card to play my favorite games (fallout 4) on high to ultra and medium settings mixed on 60FPS where i was nicely suprised...
Any thoughts and ideas where and what to upgrade?
Thank you guys

Does anyone know if the Zbook 17 (G2) will support a eDP panel, and if I could find a eDP cable for it? The motherboard seems to have a eDP socket on board

I just bought HP Zbook 17 G2 DreamColor.
The white color on the screen is too yellowish at 6500k color temperature. Have to set color temperature 9000K or more in "HP Mobile Display Assistant" to offset the yellow. On the other hand, my 8770w has the same dream color panel, but the white color is not yellowish at 6500k.
Can someone offer any insight on this? Both panels are LGD02FC. But both showing completely different white colors at 6500k color temperature.
I am thinking about getting an x-rite display pro but I am not sure whether it would make things better. Will the yellowish tint go away after calibration?
Or, Could it be due to a defective panel? Defective decoder? Is there anything else that could be defective? -
Hi guys! Brand new to the forums here.
I just bought a Zbook 17 G1 with the Dreamcolor display. I'd like to share my issues with the forums here in-case anyone else has these same problems, this way if someone else is struggling, they can find a solution, and maybe we can all collaborate to find more *permanent* solutions together, as everything I've done to remedy my issues are just temporary solutions ( at least to me ).
My current specs :
Core i7 4700MQ
Quadro K610M ( I plan on upgrading to the 5100M )
32GB of Kingston HyperX Impact ram
As others may have pointed out, on the Dreamcolor display, by default, 10bpc color depth is not selected in the NVIDIA Control Panel. This causes severe color banding on the display, and it looks worse depending on what you're doing. On the latest NVIDIA drivers supplied by HP, if you try and select 10bpc in the control panel, the screen will flicker black, and then it will revert back to 8bpc again, making it impossible to even select 10bpc. Now, if you revert back to driver version 385.73 ( which Windows will also install by default at first system launch if you don't update any drivers via HP's website ), you can get your GPU to output 10bpc, HOWEVER, something I was noticing is that every time my computer would wake from sleep mode, it would revert to 8bpc. I wanted to test this, so I would change some settings in the control panel to alter what the laptop did when I closed the lid. If I set it to hibernate when the lid was closed? Same thing ( reverts back to 8bpc ). If you restart the laptop, it will remain at 10bpc. It will also stay at 10 if you put it into sleep mode manually by either clicking it in Windows, or by putting it to sleep via the function key on the keyboard.
So I concluded that it ONLY does this if you have windows set to perform an action such as hibernate or sleep when you *close your lid*. I've yet to figure out if this is an issue on NVIDIA's side or Windows side. Either way, I've remedied this by setting windows to "do nothing" when I close my lid, on both battery and A/C power, through the settings. To avoid the laptop from draining power or staying on when i'm not using it, I set it to go to sleep after only 5 minutes of inactivity on both battery and A/C, this way if I forget to put it to sleep manually, it will do it on it's own. It's a bit frustrating since I tend to put my laptop to sleep a lot, and I'd rather just be able to close the lid and be done with it, but after a couple of weeks, it's become habit just to quickly put it to sleep with the keyboard prior to closing the lid. This avoids me having to go back into the NVIDIA Control Panel and changing it back after I wake my laptop back up.
The only other issue I've experienced is with the brightness of my screen. It seems that unless you have HP Mobile Display Assistant installed ( which I got from HP's drivers page ), you simply can't achieve the full brightness your screen is capable of outputting. So strange. You will also have to have the Display Assistant set to run at your computer startup. When you do this, something you will notice at every system boot is your display initially appearing darker than usual ( even though you never changed the brightness level ), and then once the Display Assistant starts in the background, your display might flicker for a second, but then it'll be where it should be in regards to brightness. And it'll be MUCH brighter at 100% than without the assistant installed.
I hope I was able to help some folks experiencing these same issues, and if anyone here has come up with their own solutions to these problems, please let me know. I'd love to just not have to deal with these at all, haha.slnotebook likes this. -
Hello, can I upgrade the zbook 17 g1 GPU to a m3000m or any other of the maxwell gpu?

I don't have Dreamcolor so I cannot help those who do.
This tells me that they do have low level support for Maxwell cards onboard the bios. I hope that helps.nowifirange likes this. -
I did, as well, have something to ask about from Zbook 17 G4 owners. Has anyone tried upgrading theirs to Polaris/AMD cards, like the WX7100 or RX480?
Looking into one and want to know whether that upgrade path is possible. -
Does the DreamColor panel have 2 or 4 wires coming from the right side of the monitor on a 17 G2?
-
Also, what manufacturer was the RAM?
Thanks -
I'm thinking whether to order with 8GB of RAM, then add more later as their upgrade prices seem a bit expensive.
Thanks -
I have a ZBook 17 G2 with Dreamcolor display and Nvidia Quadro K5100M GPU. It's always had a problem with dark scenes in videos looking very pixelated. Very disappointing, since I paid so much for the Dreamcolor and the K5100M was the most expensive GPU option. I have a ThinkPad notebook that's 10 years older than the ZBook, and it doesn't have this pixelation problem with dark video scenes.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm looking at the Nvidia Control Panel to see if I can fix it with any video settings. I see there is an "Output color depth" option that is set to "8 bpc". When I change it to "10 bpc" and hit Apply, it goes back to "8 bpc" for some reason. From what I read, both the Dreamcolor screen and K5100M are supposed to support 10-bit color, so I don't know why it won't let me change it to "10 bpc". -
Hello,
I have a Zbook 17 G1 and I tried to install a Firepro M6100 in it. It works fine, but temperatures were terrible (reaching 90 degrees in seconds and close to 100 degrees after about 2 minutes) and it didn't have any contact with GPU and thermal pads at upper part of the card, so my question is: do I need a copper shim in order to reach lower temperatures? If so, has anyone have any idea about which size?
Also, do you guys know any compatible 120hz screen for it? It's a no dreamcolor one (LVDs and TN, I think).
Thanks in advance.Last edited: Apr 29, 2021 -

Your 6100 should not be heated to 100 degrees. Experiment, this card shouldn't be very hot. Try to put several layers of a thin copper plate into a sandwich and if the temperatures improve and you have enough - and measure this sandwich with a ruler and then take an ordinary copper plate (not a sandwich) of the same thickness as this sandwich. -
I bought some copper shims on ebay and I'm waiting for their arrival. I'll let you guys informed.
Thank you for your help.Last edited: May 3, 2021 -
I don't remember very well what kind of signal you have - eDP or LVDS. -
I have a Radeon WX 4150 installed here, but hybrid graphics activated since WX 4150 is eDP only and I could overclock to 75hz. 85hz gives a black screen and 80hz causes screen to flash continuously.
I mean, better than nothing. Thanks.
Is there any way to install an eDP screen here? Even if I need cables, conversion board, etc?
EDIT: It's kinda useless for gaming, though, since framerate keeps going down because screen can't handle :sLast edited: May 4, 2021 -
but who cares? in any case, TN panel in such corporate laptops are exactly at the level of IPS "gaming" laptops, which quite satisfies many. -
Yeah, screen is gorgeous as I said, but 60hz is unfortunate.
With a converter, Will I be able to use a 120hz screen or something? I'm considering that it will going to use the same bus/slot, so will I be limited by that? -

By cutting the notebook CD/RW connection, you can apply the M4000M to the 15 inch ZBook. There is no temperature problem. FurMark shows him at 75c maximum.
There is small problem with M4000M, he will be limited to 75W, and not 100W. There is no way to fix, but he is still better than any other card you can put into ZBook 15. I try MXM 1050 Ti, and he does not work. M2000M is too slow, he does not have enough CUDA cores.
-
I have 2 Zbooks 17 G1 here, actually. G2 heatsink seems to work fine on them, so I'm not sure if this is actually going to help, but let's see.
But that's good to know it has a way to use MXM 3.0b cards in Zbook 15. Maybe I could buy one in the future for this. -
