Hmmm. I recall an issue with a Zbook 15 G1 where it had some drive write corruption and timeouts unless the Intel RAID driver was loaded for the SATA controller. It happened regardless of if the controller was in AHCI or RAID mode, and started occurring around the time Windows 10 Anniversary Update was released.

Either way I hope you end up getting a replacement on the way. No point in losing any more money over this issue.

Here's latencymon on a fresh Windows 7 Ultimate install (minutes old) with nothing installed besides latencymon and the nvidia driver. Again, ataport.sys is causing massive spikes. Idling on the desktop.

Update, after changing some BIOS settings and shutting down the machine, the ZBook now refuses to boot at all. It just sits at the HP splash screen with the press ESC to enter BIOS message. However, it is completely unresponsive and I can't enter it. Also, Caps Lock and Num Lock flash 5 times, whcih according to HP means "The embedded controller has timed out waiting for the BIOS." Is my board fried? I do have next day business support with a CarePack.

Since its not working at all now I would just call them and tell them to fix it.
Btw did you update the Intel firmware as well? When I update one firmware I update the others as well because I know that combination has been properly tested by HP

Which Intel Firmware do you mean? I only updated the BIOS and the Chipset drivers when I could still get into Windows. Now nothing works and I can't even enter BIOS, even after multiple resets/CMOS battery pulls etc..

I'll give support a call and will report.

The blinking code I get is 3 flashes while the screen is off, then 5 flashes once the screen is on. According to HP, that means "CPU not detected". Wonder what could have screwed this thing up so bad, there was nothing external done to it, no shocks, no water, nothing.

It sounds like power delivery to the processor may have failed. Its possible that something may have gone wrong during the bios flash which caused the power circuitry to run out of spec. It would explain the extra heat and performance problems.

Case is created, will update. Let's hope that CarePack comes in handy.

In other news, the ProBook 430 G4 is quite a zippy little machine. Also, it feels really nice having something super light and portable.

    Fingers crossed*

Btw I found all new laptops now are quite good as long as you put a ssd in them.
Only problem is that these dual cores are not able to handle any serious workload or multitasking.
Even with our Zbook 17 I am running into bottlenecks with the quad core.

Yeah, we've come quite far with laptops. The biggest difference I noticed with the little 13" ProBook is how I was able to work for about 6 hours without needing a charger. My ZBook makes it 2 hours tops. :D

Final Update (I hope): The tech (who was very friendly btw) replaced my system board this morning and so far, all is good. Installed Windows 10 LTSB and all drivers, DPC latency is back to literally zero. Happy to have this machine back. Now to figure out what to do with the ProBook :D

Also, while setting up the new board in the BIOS, we did all security and firmware updates to the CPU. I hope I'm set now. BIOS is version 1.14 now, I'm not sure if I'll update. Machine works perfectly so far.

The thunderbolt 3 controller only supports display port 1.2, so the ports will be limited to that version of display port even though the nvidia card supports 1.4.

Thank you very much for your answer. How then the new Dell Precision do support displayport 1.4? Through the separate dedicated mDP connector? It's surprising that such a connector is not added to the new G4 ZBook station.
Can I attach an external monitor with the connector of DP 1.4 to G4 ZBOOK?

Yes, the Precision's have a dedicated mDP connector.

You probably could connect a BenQ SW320 to the Zbook 17 G4, but you would likely not be able to run it at 10-bit color at 4k@60hz. In this case the precision makes more sense.

Another option (if you are more daring) would be to get a Pascal Quadro desktop card (P1000 or better) and put it in an eGPU. That would give you four displayport 1.4 ports, far better than any laptop can do right now. I did something similar with a Zbook 17 G3 + Akitio Node + GTX 1070, and you essentially get whatever output ports the graphics card is capable of without any limitations.

Hi all -- long time no post but I've been lurking here and would like to run something by you folks. looking to replace a 2011 era pavilion 17" laptop with core i7 sandy bridge hardware. Used for photo editing with Lightroom, and a catalog of about 8,000 photos. Haven't paid much attention to the laptop industry since then. Anyway, is my observation correct that the high performance 4-core processors are just not to be found in the consumer sector anymore, except in gaming platforms? That is why I am here, actually -- it appears that in order to get real performance one needs to consider the likes of a zbook 17 G 3 or 4, where one can configure for a pair of 7200 rpm HDDs plus what appears to be one or more m.2 SSDs ("mini card").

my other observation is that HP's business notebooks appear to have good displays -- unlike Dells which I see are rather pathetic in terms of color gamut. thanks for listening

For photo work I'd shop for a used G2 with the Dreamcolor and a fast processor. 10bit is 10bit after all.

Hi guys - quick question if I can. Colleague's using a fully loaded ZBook 17 (i7 Extreme 4930XM, 32GB, K5100M, DC, dual drives) - it originally had 230W charger. Colleague somehow swapped the 230W for a 200W somewhere (imagine some lucky person in the office has got it by mistake). Would 200W have problem powering this machine? It's just the supply of the 230W is rarer than expected.

    Hello,

I have Zbook 17 G1 mobile workstation with 200W Slim Smart AC adapter.
I need to know information about compatibility between Zbook 17 G1 and following HP Docking Stations:

-Will Zbook work with HP Docking Station VB044AV + 200W Slim Smart AC adapter?
-Will Zbook work with HP Docking Station A7E32AA + 200W Slim Smart AC adapter

Since I already have above 2 docking stations, I would like to avoid buying new one A7E34AA which is part number for Zbook 17 G1 in specifications.

From QuickSpecs about HP2012 Docking stations, there is mentioned:

    HP 2012 90W Docking Station A7E32AA
    HP 2012 230W Docking Station A7E34AA

    "AC adapter included
The HP 2012 90W Docking Station gives you an energy-efficient 90W Smart AC adapter for your Notebook PC.
The HP 2012 230W Docking Station gives you an energy-efficient 230W Smart AC adapter for your Notebook PC or Mobile Workstation.
These Smart Adapters help guard against power fluctuations with integrated surge protection."

From this specifications above, it seems that A7E32AA and A7E34AA are completely same in HW, but differs only in included power of AC adapter.
What is your opinion and experience?

The ZBook came with the 200W "slim" adapter as standard. The 230W adapter was shipped with the Advanced Docking Station 230W only IIRC. The 200W standard adapter will power his ZBook just fine.

Greetings from Australia! I recently purchased a brand new ZBook 17 (non dreamcolor) on eBay. All is well, except for a small imperfection right in the middle of the display. On a uniform image, I can see a donut shaped bright area, almost exactly where the HP logo is on the lid. This is harder to notice on a more complex image.

Being a perfectionist, I decided that this might be a good enough reason to upgrade the screen to a dreamcolor one, and managed to source most of the needed parts, including the 10-bit LG panel, the LVDS (dreamcolor) board, and the cable that goes from the JEDP1 port on the system board to the LVDS board.

The second cable, LVDS board to LCD screen, however, is proving impossible to find! I have two questions therefore to those with more experience than me:

    1. What is the part number of the ZBook LVDS to LCD cable? Can someone post an image of it?

    2. I did manage to find an elite book cable that almost fits. The part number of this is 6017B0308401 (SC/JA/JA). It has one white 20 pin female and two 50 pin male connectors. Unfortunately the ZBook needs one 20 pin female, one 50 pin male and one 40 pin male connector to work. The second question therefore is whether an elite book color board will work in the ZBook. Doubt it, but you never know! Thanks for any answers, in advance.

Colleague sent me a ZBook 17 with Quad XM + K5100M. Was expecting DC display. Screen might turn out to be a 1600x900 screen instead (587749-3G6 PNL,17.3 HD+ AG LED SVA 60% 200n,AUO 1). It's bizarre, like putting 16" tyre on a sports car.

Does anyone know if this is 40 pin, like the normal TN FHD screen? (got a spare FHD panel somewhere I hope to swap it in).

    Hi

Does anybody know, is there any heat problems with the HP Zbook 17 G4? I am going to swap my Thinkpad P51 to HP Zbook 17 G4, Because tinkpad has issue with the heat. It is heat up very quickly and CPU throttle. I did not find any stress test or any other information about the 17g4. So if anybody have one, can you please post some screenshots with the stress test(Prime95 + FurMark) and CPU\GPU temperature(HWinfo).

    Thanks.

Hey, did you contact Lenovo for service? Did you try undervolting the CPU? I have my voltage offset at -0.140. There is no overheating problem nor throttling on my machine, and I have the hotter running Xeon E3-1535 v6.

I contacted with lenovo. First time they have repasted it and replaced thermal pads. After 2 days it again begin to thermal throttle and heats up to 100 Celsius degree.in my humble opinion undervolt it is not the proper solution, i bought the laptop for 3.5K+$. good specs and i need to undervolt? I bought workstation laptop for performance. So i am not agree with it.

Currently i am waiting for heatsink replacement. But i am almost sure, that it will not resolve the issue. :( But i will give a try.

I also hope it. As far as i understand almost all modern laptops, have such issue... Thinkpad P51, P71. Dell precision and etc. But i couldn't find any suitable information about the Zbook 17 G4 and i hope that some body in these thread will reply with their experience. :)

Hi peeps sorry about the late delay. I might be the only person alive who has got a fully loaded zbook 17 g4 and can with all my confidence tell you that they are rock solid amd have zero heat issue. I have literally pushed mine to the edge with software. And it is right on. If there is a certain benchmark you want me to provide for you i will do it no problems at all.

Hi, finally somebody who have one. :)
It will be awesome if you could run Prime95 and FurMark simultaneously (30 minutes) and make screenshots with HWinfo64 sensors info. I understand that it is just syntetic and not realistic loads, but it at least it will show difference with other laptops.

here you go hwinfo was stopped and started a few times by accident but you can be assured it actually ran for 1 hour non stop.

I ran prime95 with all self tests and furmark was ran with 1920x1080 both at the same time.

Yes. I mean work tasks. :) because prime with the futurmark it is very extensive workload. And as i see you have max specs. I am looking for 7820hq + p3000. And mostly i will use just cpu. And as i see you have big difference betwen core temps. As i understand proper repasting should resolve the issue
