The mobo should not be related to panel type. DC2 panel does use different out put signal which is eDP while the normal screen uses LVDS.
It matters if you want to switch the graphic card since regular card such as K2200m can only output eDP signal which is used by DC2.
I think if possible it is easier you just buy a dreamcolor display like z24x.

I use a 17 inch not a 15 inch. I think that's the issue lol
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk -
They were, and as confirmed earlier, they still are 10bit. The only exception was 8730w DreamColor, which was 8bit. Up until 8770w, the motherboard connector had both LVDS and DP lanes (not eDP, missing a couple of pins that made it eDP later). DP for the DreamColor (DP -> ColorBoard -> LVDS -> Panel) and LVDS for the rest of the options. With ZBooks they switched to eDP only. You would still need, not only the display, but the proper cables (Motherboard -> Color Board and Color Board -> Panel), as well as the Color Board itself. Good luck finding any, not to mention all, of them
Sadly with DreamColors it is always the case that you better sell and get a DreamColor machine, than hunt for the parts. Unless you live, or have a friend, in China. You can get all of the needed parts there.

The other sad thing is that I am selling mine for 1500 amd Noone wants it so I have to upgrade myself. How can I find out the item numbers of all those you listed lol. Where there's a will
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk -
Unless someone tears apart the DreamColor assembly - you can't. That's what 8740w users (myself including) did, but parts still don't show. It's because how HP dealt with DreamColors - they only store the whole assemblies, not separate parts (cables, color board, display, housing). So again, the only cables and color boards (for 8740w, since that's what I'm searching for) were from disassembled machines and they are RARE. I don't think that it would be any different for newer machines. Well actually they finally made the color board available as a spare part for the G3 (since it was failing in previous models, not very often but still, and you'll need the whole assembly when that happens, yeah right). You would still need the cables. As I said - China (TaoBao) is your only option and you don't need part numbers for that, just write "ZBook DC" (w/o quotes) and they'll show.

I think the DC2 panels are all LDVS. The one in my Zbook 15 G1 definitely is. The motherboard has a jEDP1 connector on it so there is some kind of secondary signalling board in the lid converting EDP-> 50 pin LDVS. They also offer actual EDP displays (SVA TN, UWVA IPS, UWVA QHD) in this model so no signalling board is needed for those panels.
The Zbook 17 also have a jEDP1 connector on their mainboard. I think (weirdly) HP has an EDP->40 pin LDVS (for non-DC2 displays) and an EDP->50 pin LDVS (for DC2 displays) for those models, because all displays for Zbook 17 G1 / G2 are LDVS. -

Hahaha. I'm talking to some Asian guy who is selling me his top panel on taobao . In the 5 minutes I've spoke to him I learned more than HP and anyone else.
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk -
Care to share what exactly you have learned? I for one told you everything I know.
Huh, that would explain the "LED board" they have in the parts list. That's a rather odd decision, or they might have literary tons of left-over LVDS displays, which would explain this decision. -

There is very little difference in the k2200m and the k5100m only for a small amount of performance and less memory in it (alot). His advice was to wait it out until the maxwell cards are good to install.
-- On a side note for this I am very confused as I just finished talking to nVidia Tech support about the k2200m. Every single document or tec spec for the k2200m says it is maxwell architecture but this
person swears it is kelper because of the K. can someone help me out with this.
Talking about the screen with the guy in china he did mention everything you all said but he went into alot more detail and showed me pictures of all the components that is involved and mentioned how they all relate. My options were as said here to replace the entire top half which would be the easiest or to get the dreamcolor panel, board and cables. He said that the connection for the 15 and 17 are the same. He put a 15 screen on a 17 and visa versa. so t shouldnt matter as long as I have the parts needed for DC2triturbo likes this. -
Can you ask that guy about 8740w? I made quite the list from everything I could find, so another confirmation/list would be nice. About the MxxxxM not working in earlier ZBooks is a bit odd, since they do work in EliteBooks, at least M5000M does so in 8740w. Intentionally crippled earlier ZBook BIOSes? If so, don't expect them to work at any point in time.
I think that the K2200m is based on a downclocked 860m, which is Maxwell. The 8 series was a mix of Kepler (mostly), Maxwell (only the soldered 860m) and I think older architectures as well. Not to forget the desktop GTX 750. Just like with the consumer Maxwell version, I think that's why it didn't got the MxxxxM - not enough parts to fill a line-up, like when the actual MxxxxM was released. Haven't gone thoroughly through it, but at least the most of the parts are Maxwell.
It's better to either have the whole assembly, or the whole machine. Sourcing the parts one by one has another downside, and is one you mentioned - you can use whatever ColorBoard you can find, but the displays vary one from another, even if same model, let alone if different (which is the case with 15" and 17"). Calibrator should fix that though. -
win32asmguy Moderator Moderator
Yeah, I figured the color board was probably what stores the presets (and it does it in NVRAM, so you keep calibrations across reboots and re-installs). I think the "LDVS Signalling Board" part is actually a more simpler version of the DC2 board, that just converts EDP->LDVS (40 pin). Maybe just at the time HP was designing the Zbook 17 in 2014 they couldn't get a good enough supply of eDP 17 inch panels.
K2200M is definitely Maxwell - it is a GM107 part, just like Geforce 860M. You can also see its desktop equivelent K2200 which is more available (and reviewed). Its a very fast quadro card, mostly because of its clock speeds. Its probably the first Quadro Nvidia made that wasn't intentionally clocked slower than its equivalent Geforce part.triturbo likes this. -

@triturbo yeah I'll definately ask him about the 8740w for you.
I am ready to buy one of these monitors full top half but the most worrying part is I'm in Canada and I'm afraid the shopping and timing will slaughter me haha. His reviews have been great and he evens guides people with Skype or any video chat how to set up the panels.
I have no idea why the Nvidia tech support argued with me but you'll never know maybe he was just there to annoy people.

So its a choice between the k5100m and the Top monitor DC2. What would you all go for. Both are priced the exact same s its really hard and both dont mind waiting for funds to arrive in paypal from my bank.
TaoBoa person ( a different one ) will sell me the screen also for 600 CAD plus shipping air freight in a week where as the others take approximately 3 weeks, -
Depends on what you need most. I would go with the DreamColor and get a more powerful FirePro/Quadro later, since K5100 is getting old (that's of course if they fix the BIOS). BTW Have you asked the EliteBook guy if he tried the W7170m? Maybe the incompatibility is just with Quadros.
BTW How do you communicate with these guys? Do you speak Chinese, also I know that you have to have Chinese phone number in order to register there. -
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
I used google translate at first and asked them if they speak english and you would be surprised how many do. They use alichat and alipay instead of paypal altho some of them have their own ebay account or are setting it up.
I registered with a canadian number so you should be ok to just sign up and let google translate the website and pages for you. shipping is cheaper than expected only 40 dollars but a lengthy time
EDIT : who should i go with the american guy or the chinese guy, The chinese lad just sent me a DHL report from a shipment he sent to estonia and it took a week.Last edited: Sep 12, 2016 -

It's not an upgrade I am looking to talk to them about. I is after a repair service to get a new replacement because something oddly has gone weird with this laptop.
I explained it all to them the 1st tier is understanding and wants me to fix it but the customer relations is the scum of the pile, they call you name and degrade you just so you will go away and hang up. Has anyone had any problems with keys occasionally not registering as they type on their ZBook 17 G2? Upon further inspection, it seems the "n" key on mine needs to be pressed directly in the center. If it's pressed near the edge, I can see the light underneath it turn off, but it still might not display "n" on the screen.
It's sad that such an expensive laptop has such a low quality keyboard. I've never seen a laptop keyboard that seemed this cheap. I've seen $500 Dell laptops with better keyboards than this. -
Padraig O Cuinn Notebook Consultant
My keyboard had issues with the shift key. It would select everything and then jump between the asterisk and space. I got it replaced and the tech thought it was very paculiar incident.
Apart from that one incident I think he keyboard is nice. Definately better than dell's but the thinkpads have the best for me. With the new ones I'm not sure who wins they are solid like the zbook keyboard and have a Nice shape. If HP made their keys slightly bigger it would be a very rough decision to make.Last edited: Sep 18, 2016 -
Allow me to join the lounge as a new (again) ZBook 17 G2 owner.
A little backstory: This is my 2nd ZBook 17 G2, my first one had some major issues with the BIOS chip and the FirePro drivers (4710MQ, FHD, FirePro M6100, base config). Very frustrated with my Windows Notebook experience (3 defective laptops from 3 different brands in a row) I made the switch to a top-spec MacBook Pro. While the Macbook was a very good computer, I kept finding myself longing for another ZBook, it's sleek dark exterior and imposing presence just did it for me. So I did a little digging and was quite disappointed to find it largely discontinued in Switzerland. The G3 was no option for me, since in my opinion it is downgrade in every way apart from updated internals. So I took to the used market and found a guy selling a new in box top-of-the-line 17 G2. Long story short, I trade him the MacBook +cash for the ZBook and so far I couldn't be happier. I felt a strong sense of "Welcome Home". Anyway, here are the specs of my new "old" ZBook:
-Intel Core i7 4910MQ
-32GB RAM (4x8GB)
-Nvidia Quadro K5100M 8GB
-512GB Z-Turbo Drive (M.2) + 512GB Sata SSD
-HP Dreamcolor Display w/720p webcam
-CD/DVD/BR Writer, Fingerprint Reader
So far, the only little issues I've had with the computer is that the Dreamcolor display emits a high-pitched noise when it's on. Apparently this is a wide-spread issue and I've learned to live with it. Another little thing is the signature ZBook rattling bottom cover while typing, which is an easy fix. Hope I'm welcome here! -
You are welcome

well thankfully the clever technician came to my place and managed to take out the screw and put a new one in without costing me 2k for the new board. Everyone was really happy with this out come.
The only thing I am yearning for now is 2 2.5 SSD cards.
as it stands my unit looks like this:
2 X 1TB Toshiba ZTurbo Drives
2 X 1TB HDD
M5000M 8GB
DreamColor 3
Xeon E3 1575M v5 @ 3.0Ghz - 3.8Ghz
64GB EEC Samsung DDR4 RAM

Anyone that has their ZBook 17 G3 is there any chance you can get send me velocity that was included. I have tried every potion with support to try get the exact version that was included but they don't seem to know how to obtain it. All the links they give me are the wrong version or for their thin client stations. It also is not the RGS velocity. These is not the right one. It came preinstalled with the ZBook.

Sadly, I'm considering asking my work for a replacement for my zBook 17 (1st generation). Trying to decide whether to request the zBook17 G3 as the replacement or drop down to the HP 840 G3....
The current zBook 17 I have has had serious CPU overheating issues... it would stay stuck in turbo on all four cores at 3.5 - 3.6GHz forever, so overheat at well under 40% CPU load. Cooling system was replaced twice, followed by full motherboard and CPU replacement the 2nd time. Only 1-2 months after mobo/CPU replacement it started having crazy Intel video driver crashes. The screen would flash black and then reappear with a little message saying "The Intel Video Driver crashed and has recovered." or something similar. It would typically run for a few minutes with no problems, but then it would start and eventually it'd be happening almost every 10 seconds. So obviously I went into BIOS and disabled the hybrid graphics. So now it runs only on the Nvidia K610 and I'm lucky if I might get 90 minutes of battery life when I have to go to a meeting or training.
The battery life and sheer size/weight of the machine are the reasons I might consider downgrading to the 840 G3 laptop. Otherwise, the specs my work chooses for the zBook17 G3 would be a nice upgrade from my existing zBook 17 "G1".
1st = zBook 17 G3; 2nd = zBook 17 G1 (mine today); 3rd = 840 G3
CPU: i7 6820HQ; 4800MQ 2.7; i5 6300U
RAM: 16GB, 4x4, DDR4; 16GB, 4x4, DDR3; 8GB, 8x1 DDR4
Storage; 256GB SSD + 1TB 7200; 512GB SSD + 1TB 5400; 256GB SSD
GPU: Quadro M2000M; Quadro K610M 1TB; Intel HD 520
For a sheer power standpoint, the newer zBook 17 would be nice, but it's a pain in the tooshy to lug around -
My ZBook 17 G2 fans would run constantly until I cleaned the fans of accumulated dust. You can use a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment to suck dust from the vents and if you're comfortable removing the keyboard (don't remove the keyboard cables) you can also use the vacuum on the fan.

Is k1100m good enough to run 2 HD videos from Netflix or Amazon Prime simultaneously on Zbook 17 g2 with dreamcolor and not experience any lag? Or surf the Web while a 4k video from YouTube is playing (also no lag)?
Im looking at some zbook 17 g2 on ebay and all the dreamcolor models have k1100m GPU, or at least the ones in my price range. If k1100m is going to struggle with streaming two HD videos at the same time, I will probably add a few more hundred bucks to my budget and get a newer computer, like precision 7510/7710, think p50/p70 or the 3rd generation g3s.
Any input will be appreciated.

Hello,
First of all sorry for my bad English, I’m from Germany, school English was about 20 years ago. After company insolvency (not my Company) I’m owner of 2 Notebooks:
HP Elitebook 8740w,i5-560M@2,67MHZ, 8GB, AMD HD5800 and ZBook 17 (F0V51ET#ABD, maybe G1?), [email protected], 12GB, Quadro K610M, Display 1600x900. Sandisk SSD and Win 10 on both.
The 8740w is fully functional, but the cover and side case are broken by hitting the sidewalk… Big luck the display still works fine. Zbook works like a charm and it is still in warranty.
The Zbook is great for Office & Internet, nice haptics and design, I really like it. I want to do a GPU upgrade for casual gaming (Final Fantasy and other MMOs), and after reading this thread I have to look for K3100m, K4100m or K5100m if I understand right.
After trying some (direct X based) games on both machines it looks like the HD5800 performs noticeable better (and good enough for me) than the K610M and the Intel HD 4600 (both individually tried). I’m not the hardcore gamer anyway.
Is it possible to run the HD5800 in the Z-Book? Seems to be the cheapest way for me to upgrade.
Otherwise, how big is the difference between the K3100m and K610m? Is it worth an upgrade for casual Gaming? Are there any (maybe older) AMD based alternates without changing the cooling system or modding? And what about the warranty when changing the GPU?
Maybe sell or exchange is an alternative too, but the Zbook is the best piece of hardware I own until now. I am grateful for some good advice. -
If you have the time to play around, you can try to swap the HD5800 in the ZBook. The thing is that most likely you'll need new heat-sink, since the one you have now would be half-size (due to the fact that the GPU is MXM-A, where's HD5800 is MXM-B). You can safely try to see if there would be picture on the screen, since this version of HD5800 is tied with the 8740w, just don't make prolonged runs, or the non-covered components would overheat and fail, rendering the whole GPU dead. If there's no picture you can try to flash DELL/Alienware vBIOS on it and try again. Good luck!
