I rang up HP today to figure out where I could buy an 8560w, and they said the laptop had been pulled from the hpshopping site because there was a hardware refresh going to take place in a couple of weeks. It'd be keeping the same model number, and the changes were internal only.

Anyone else know anything about this?

The truth behind this has nothing to do with the refresh. There's simply no big demand on these in Canada. The next gen is months away, not weeks.

He said they weren't next gen - they were still 8560w, but they were getting upgraded specs. Same chassis and all that. That he expected them to be up sometime shortly after the 17th or so.

You think that's not the case, though? I was going to wait and see what happened with this before looking for something else. I would imagine if they're not coming back he would have tried to sell me on a different model instead of taking my contact info and promising to get in touch in a couple weeks when they're out.

Oh, I thought you meant the new gen hardware (Ivy Bridge + kepler/7000M). If they are just changing some specs, could be. But since you are waiting anyway, why not to try other options? You can get a great deal on the Precision M4600 (can also get one with IPS screen). HP Canada is always way behind the US branch in terms of specs and price. Dell is more synced, IMHO.

The M4600 I built on Dell.ca a few days ago was a lot more than the equivalent 8560w. And that was with some crazy Dell coupon, too. I like Dell's Canadian presence more, but not sure that I want to pay much of a premium for it. I'll take another look, though.

$2379 (after $650 discount) for the Dell, compared to $1497 for the HP (XU083UT). Only real difference in spec is that the Dell has an nvidia 1000m, but I don't want an nvidia gfx card anyway.
