    Hi All,

I am pulling out important side points from threads I have started because I believe they are worth discussing in their own right.

So how hot do the 8740w laptops run?

    a) Dual Core Setup / 2800M
    b) Dual Core Setup /7820M
    c) Quad Core / 2800M
    d) Quad Core / 7820M

I am talking about for general use rather than for a full on 3D render ! Is there much difference between duals and quads. Are the fans smart enough so they do not stay on all the time.

I notice from the literature that these "laptops" should not be used on ones lap, but on a hard surface !

    Thoughts appreciated.

i can answer (c) for you.

    in conservative mode (balanced)

    in room 27c

    GPU - 43c
    CPU - 47c

it spikes up to about mid 50's from time to time, but if i'm just preparing work on 3DS Max for example, it goes down to it's almost idle temps. thats without fan btw.

You are a star !!! :) If you were here I would give you a beer (Real Ale at 4.6%) !! :) That is if you like Real Ale :)

With winter en route perhaps a quad laptop on "lap" may be a way of keep heating costs down ... lol...

Thanks all. I have just noticed your room temperatures 26 and 27c. That is warm !!! Mine is 20C !!

I just measured my trusty old nx8220 Pentium M 2.13GHz with 2GB Ram and 128MB on an ATI X600 graphics chip. Wow !!!! Using the SIS utility I got:

    Motherboard: 54C
    CPU: 85C

surely not..... Time to change. No wonder the fan keeps going... Aaah just spotted a rogue printer process 90% CPU. Killed it..... CPU now down to a chilly 70C :) That interesting I wondering if the CPU is autodownclocking cos of the hot temp. I know desktops do this.

So 45- 50 for the 8740 is positively frozen compare to my current laptop !!

    Thanks,

    Sam
