Hello. I have an nx9420, and few months ago i change the radeon x1600m for a quadro 1500m.

The problem is when i start a program that uses a lot of gpu like google earth, autocad... the laptop crashes and goes black screen and i have to restart. I have two quadro and with all i have the same problem.
If i disconnect the power supply the laptop works correctly ( i suppose that the problem is the power supply ) but sometimes (few times ) the laptop crashes totaly and whith or without the power supply connected the screen fails from bios booting, this show strange colours or flashing.

I change of card and the problem persist, and only works fine with the radeon. I have a 90w power supply, and i think if i change it for a 120 or 135w power supply i solved the problem , but i dont undertand why this few times that fails from booting with the power supply disconnected and with the battery charged.

Thanks and sorry if my english isn't very good.

Here's what I think, but I have to say that I'm not sure about this, and I don't know why you're having trouble when running on battery.

I have a nx9420 too, and the only thing I can come up with is that your GPU overheats because it runs on higher clocks when using the power supply compared to when using the battery.

The reason why it overheats is that you're using the ATI heatsink with the Nvidia GPU, at least that's my guess. ;)
Even if you're using the right heatsink it can still overheat, of course.
According to the service manual, page 5-40, you need part: 413489-001.

Or, you haven't mounted the heatsink properly, but since you have tried changing the GPU I doubt it.

1 - Try updating the BIOS if you haven't done it.
This BIOS is for both nx9420 and nw9440, meaning that it's for both GPU's. Video stability is mentioned here as an improvement.

2 - Check if I'm right, use GPU-Z: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility and connect/disconnect the power supply, does the frequencies change?

3 - Lower the clocks, either with Nvidias program, or some third party program. I know it's possible to do it with ATI but I have no experience with Nvidia, I don't need the extra performance so I'm using the lower battey settings even when I'm using the power supply.

If none of this helps then I guess you need a better power supply.

    Thanks.

The problem persist with the new 135W power supply and with the lastest version of bios installed.

I check if the clocks are higer when i connect the power supply, and these change from 200gpu/300mem to 450gpu/600mem.

I lower the clocks to 225/300 and the laptop is not stable ( the screen goes black) but the temperarure is not high incluide with 450/600 clocks, about 50ÂșC.

With radeon card all works fine. I have both radeon and nvidia drivers installed, but i dont think that the problem was this. Maybe if i formatted my laptop i can solved the problem?

    Thanks.

yes, you really shouldn't be using an ati heatsink with an nvidia card.

the GPU temperature may be 50c but i bet your graphics memory chips are not!

The screen going black screams overheat of gpu ram or bad contact with heatsink, especially as it's when you stress the gpu.

the quadro's do get very hot when they are stressed, when my 8740's paste died on the 2800M heatisnk my memory was getting up to 80-90c, when the gpu was 47c. bought some new thermal pads and all is golden.

but i would look at getting a new heatsink.

an install would be useful as having ati and nvidia drivers installed can cause problems.
