    Hey,

is anyone using here the HP Java Card and Protect tools? I have a 2530p and like to add a smartcard-reader for the expresscard slot. Problem is HP wants about 130$ for the official Samrtcard Reader + Java Card.

So is it possible to buy a cheap 3rd party smartcard-reader and use the offical hp protect tools java card with it?

I know the original smart card reader was a USB rather than a pci-e device. The USB ports in the expresscard are not whitelisted so the smart card reader itself will appear on the USB bus and allow you to install it's driver.

The only reason why Protect Tools may not work is if it checks the smart card reader's USB VID :pID and fails to refuses to work upon detecting it's not a HP VID. HP does that with some of it's software to ensure you run their rather than third-party hardware.
