Hello guys. I got my probook 4720s and here's the thing:

i got my laptop in December 2011,someone gave it to me as a a Christmas present.it was like new ..
from December to June i was playing Wow and other games like 5 h / day and i had no overheating problems..
after June when the hot temperatures and the summer came my Probook started to overheat and shut down (but only when i play games 1 hour of continuous gaming)
in July when outside was like 30-35+ degrees celsius there was no chance for me to play any games or run any programs for more than 30 mins.
From there to now every time when i use any apps that use the video card (i think) it get's to overheat and shutdown..
(and if i run any game in 5-10 min shuts down)
For example even if i use the webcam software it's overheating
Now the summer is almost over so it's starting to get cold outside but my Probook continues to overheat even if i run light apps.
Note: i never keep my laptop on my knees or on the bed.

So my guess is something is wrong with the video card and also maybe the Processor is not working properly anymore.
I am thinking maybe i can put new thermal paste? it will make any difference?
Also is there possible to upgrade my i3 processor to i5 or i7 maybe? i think the i7 processors may work better with the overheating problem..
i am presuming if i can upgrade the Cpu i also can do the same with my graphic card??
that would be awesome to improve my laptop specs and get rid of the overheating thing..

If you have any suggestions or any tips help me please.

(sorry for my bad English but it's not my native language)

    Have a nice day !

What are the CPU GPU and HDD temperatures according to HWMonitor or similar program? If the fan sounds like it's working hard, maybe your laptop needs to be cleaned of dust.

    Check out a few things:

    1) Look in service manual or parts diagram and determine locations of heatsinks and fans. Make sure they are clean. If you already have a can of duster, use it.
    2) Ensure you have newest BIOS. Be aware of issues with F.2x BIOS revisions, not being able to flash older versions or mod BIOS anymore. Usually newest non F.2x version will be fine. Read the release notes in question.
    3) In BIOS turn on the option "fan always on with AC power" this could help if nothing else has.

Also do you close the lid of the PC and use external display or docking station? Could try to leave the lid open.

If all this fails just contact HP through their chat or phone. They will probably replace the fan in this case.

    Hello.

I have similar problem but it seems to me that in my case there is some kind of a problem with fan speed regulations. When my 4720s is AC powered the fan works all the time with the same speed (very low speed). When temperature rise it doesn't speed up. After few minutes of high load CPU i very very hot. When it's battery powered fan doen't work at all and cpu reach >85C and computer shuts down. I have tried all possible setting in power plans, BIOS upgrades (at this moment I am at F.21 version), new operating system (windows, linux, DVD-booted linux). Still the same problem.

    Does anyone know whats wrong?

I have never had problem with overheating in this model.

Whats more, since the overheating problem, when I try to shut down or reboot my pc, after the system shuts down, the display is black but LED in power button and on the AC socket keeps blinking for 20-25 seconds. It never happens before. That's weird.
