Hi, i have a second hand 8770W and having a problem with it, i contacted HP, gave them the serial number, and they say can't help me, because the serial number i provide is invalid. Their technician said, maybe there was a previous repair and the serial number was not programmed in the machine, or something. And there is no sticker with the serial on the notebook, i messaged the previous owner and waiting for his reply but still.

    Any ideas guys?

I saw your post in the calibration thread and it got me thinking...

Could that laptop be an engineering sample? It might be the reason for missing serial number. However I don't know how to tell difference between normal production unit and pre-production sample.

The other reason could be motherboard replacement but tech forgot to add SN into it. Previous owner is the one who would know that.

Good point here about the engineering sample! that was the only that crossed my mind as well, i didn't knew about the motherboard replacement possibility though, until the HP tech told me. By the way HP System Information gives me a 10 digit alphanumerical serial number, it's not blank, it's just not valid for HP. Sadly until now the previous owner is out of touch...

If you have the original box, the serial number will be on that also.
