For the past couple of months I've had an issue with the screen blanking on my HP NC6400 which has the T7200 processor, 3 gig of memory, a 120 gig drive using about 40% of capacity. Prior to this time, it's worked flawlessly. When I first installed Windows 7 Home Premium (Feb 2010), and upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007 (Jun 2010) I didn't see any issues and I haven't installed any other software of consequence

Yet if I boot it up in Safe Mode with Networking, I can run for days without as much as a screen flicker. This makes me think that it's not a hardware issue like the screen or the inverter!

Running malware detection didn't identify anything extraordinary and I'm finding that I can't initiate AVG in Safe Mode.

I'd like to do a backup and start from scratch even if I revert back to Vista or XP Pro, but it appears the the resident backup function will not load while in Safe Mode.

I'd certainly appreciate hearing from anyone that may have some ideas, solutions, diagnostics, etc. that can make me rely on the NC6400 without bumping my wife off her notebook.

Thanks, in advance, for your input.

    Bill

It sounds like the graphics drivers got corrupted somehow. Try updating/reinstalling the graphics drivers, and see if that fixes the problem (if you haven't done so already)
