I don't get the point of all these different models. ZBook 14, Elitebook 840, Folio 940. It seems like they're all the same.

In the theory, yes. But all three of them are now in the UltraBook class, and all three seems to use ULV CPUs. The differences are very minor in general. Between the ZBook 14 and the Elitebook 840 G1, the only difference appears to be the different GPU and a slightly different outer design.

HP should have made the ZBook 14 a true succesor to the 8470w. Now, they have three 14" Business Ultrabooks which are nearly the same (and they all compete with the T440s and the E7440) and no more 14" model with Standard Voltage CPUs and an Mulitbay like the 8470w had.

^^ they also should have made a true successor to the 2570p! These ultra-low voltage gimmick cpu's make me laugh. I know, most people can get by using those but there are some professionals who require more power on the go. I need a quad core to run my virtualized network environment but I don't want to drag around a 15" machine.

I wonder if there will be a follow-up model to 2170p also. I found it very interesting because it apparently is dockable with the big boys docks. Something that 25x0p models were lacking.

All in all the laptop is nice keyboard is heald by 2 screws and clips not 3 like the 8760w and 8770w I was not too sure at first about the color in the pictures on line but it looks black in real but you can also see the difrent color also a bit like a crow bird there if you get what I mean. it's nice one thing I did notis is the ram I have 16 gb of gskil and it timed at 10 10 10 1600 and the laptop is stop during the boot process and say the ram is not compatible and should be replaced power off or enter to keep booting so that is not cool.

I like the old keyboard better the new one it heled by 2 screws and on the left side the rest is just clips and there are some metal but some are plastic, the rest is on par I would say metal base aluminium top. Don't get me wrong I like both I just like the 8770w look better but the zbook has optimus witch is perfect and the FHD is LG I will get the exact # I am not at home and only with my dell e6230 smaller to bring on trips. I will also take pics soon.

It's DDR3 1600 no L at the end. Like my 8770w the logo is not lighing up thow it is much biger there is not back lite. I will take some picks tonight and post some side by side of the 2. Mine came with an intel 520 180gb ssd and a 7200rpm HDD and 8 gb ram as a replacement for my defective 8770w.

Sorry that lasp post made no sens lol so here we go

Ne the logo has not back light the logo is biger and like the mac logo in sort of acrilic / plexiglass type material.

The ram I have is DDR3 and not DDR3L and it's 1600 timed at 10 10 10 and worked in the 8770w not a big deal just a bummer. as for hard disk in the new one I have a intel 180gb SSD and a 500gb hdd in the 8770w I had so of the 256 gb SSD hardware incripted witch I may keep I will ask HP.

The new one as in zbook I think I like it more as the build quality is vary good like the 8770w and the 8560w I had before I liked the keyboard on the older model a bit more the new one the keys are more shalow and a bit softer I don't mind it to much as I don't type a lot so not a dealbraker for me. Love the optimus I will try and get some numbers on battery life so far the quadro K3100M is as powerfull as the K4000m in the 75w TDP once more not a big deal with optimus. I will get the exact model of the lcd I know it's LG but could not find to much info on line about it. I will have to look at my temps as 2 cores are most of the time 5 degrees less then the 2 others It's most likley just less use of core 3,4.

That's it for now will post picks tonight and some side by side.

    Thanks for the photos.

Looks pretty nice, except the lid cover design doesn't look as 'premium' as the previous generation in my opinion. Headphone/mic combo jack is odd as well, it's a 17" workstation, there's enough space to include separate jacks!

Looks like the side exhaust vent is larger with one row of longer vertical grills instead of two rows of short grills, which should help keep down the noise. I agree in the first picture the gleam highlights the older radially machined cover.

I don't like the "soft paint" on the cover ether as from past experience it can be rubbed off. The one jack you are right there is plenty of room on a 17" to have both and not a combo. I do also miss my latch for the screen but they did put magnets to keep it closed just not as strong as the mac one but there ok. I also don't like having only 2 screws to help with the keyboard, if the clips that hold it in place on the right hand side brake you have to change the palm rest, as the keyboard is lower on the chassis to fit the speakers the keyboard is now completely over the cdrom so there is no room for a third screw. This week end I will be re installing the os on it with all the latest drivers and will let you know if there is any improvements in performance.

    Thanks for the photos!

Honestly, I am disappointed. Screw the big speakers and rather give me a full size keyboard, not one designed to fit into a 15.6" notebook. This is supposed to be a workstation, not a multimedia device.

The soft touch section of the lid is for better signal with the various radios. (Wifi, etc).

If you look at the previous 8770w, there's a plastic bit at the top of the display cover to allow for radio transparency. Dell does the same thing with their business laptops too.

Now that you've had it for a few days, how does the ZBook 17 feel? Any extra thoughts compared to the 8770w?

I'm considering purchasing a very similar build than what you have and would love to see some benchmarks (or at least a Windows experience rating ;) ) on your beast!

To setup 2 hard drives in RAID can you have them in Primary and Secondary Storage (and an optical drive in upgrade bay), or *must* the second drive be in Upgrade bay for the RAID to work?

In page 7 there are some screen shots. I do like it I have the new FHD screen and it's nicer then the 8770w it's an LG with very wide angles. Also the build quality is somewhat on par all it is it little things that you don't see like how the keyboard is held in place and no latch for the screen it's no big deal but for me optimus makes it all worth wile. Also the i7 4800 is fast over all I have to say I like the zbook more for my needs. I will post a windows experiance to night but I think it's like 7.7,7.7,7.6,7.6,7.9 in win7 did not install windows 8 yet the system did come with both dvd's.

    Hi guys,

Currently getting a zBook 17 built which was supposed to be delivered in a week here in Australia, though just got an email from my HP rep "There is currently a shortage/delay on production of the laptops regarding the new Wireless Adapters. The current ETA is showing December, I expect it should hopefully improve before then but in the laptop I built was using the new 802.11ac which is the new standard being industry standardized mid 2014, superseding the 802.11n."

    Bugger.

My question was can the laptop just be built with the existing 802.11n module, and I can just drop in a 802.11ac module later when it arrives (as it looks like the WLAN module is relatively easy to access).

The rep said he wasn't sure, and possibly the new 'ac' module requires different antenna's but again he was just guessing.

Can anyone confirm or deny? Or alternatively, is it even worth worrying about having the new 802.11ac standard? As long as I get enough wireless speed to play BF4 ;)

    Thanks guys.

According to wikipedia 802.11ac uses the same frequencies as 802.11n just wider bands so the same antennas should work. Just make sure you get the card with 3 antenna attachments, i.e. the Intel 6300AGN I think, cause the 802.11ac card has 2 antenna attachments for the wireless and 1 antenna attachment for the bluetooth that's on the same card (if you choose that card with bluetooth).

Hey everyone, I got some good news and bad news.

The good news is that the HP ZBook 14 was released sometime yesterday. The bad news is that, from what I currently understand after talking to HP's Call Center representatives, the Zbook 14 will only have the integrated Intel HD 4400 graphics.

Here's the most recent email sent to me by HP's Call Center rep:

    Hi Dayne,

I wanted to get back to you regarding the 14” ZBook & the Discrete: AMD FirePro M4100 (1 GB GDDR5 dedicated) graphics card.

I checked with HP’s CTO (configure to order) team and they advised that this is not an option, the graphics card cannot be changed.

I apologize but wanted to let you know what I found out.
