    Hey Folks,

So I'm writing this after having found no answers online about this irritating problem that has affected my laptop ever since I had it: the "Inoperative After A While Backlight Intensity Function Keys".

As you'd imagine, I'd rather not have to reboot the computer and would like to know what software controls this function (Function keys 9 and 10).

This is the typical scenario: Upon a fresh start the brightness controls work perfectly. After a while, like when disconnecting the laptop and reconnecting it, or waking up from sleep, the function keys simply cease to function and I have to endure the blast of brightness as the screen operates at full intensity (I use my machine mostly in indoor conditions).

So my question is: does anyone know what hidden executables/utilities/services or whatnot HP uses to control the operation of these and other function keys, so that I could presumably stop the offending program/process/service and restart it?!

Hi, some general hints about programs\services (running on my 67** series HP's), may be useful:

Services ('Started' in computer management): Com4QBLEx, hpqwmiex
    Startup: QlbCtrl.exe
In Device Manager > Keyboards: you should see and entry called * with HP QLB

Download the latest HP Quick Launch driver for your model. Then uninstall the old one > shut down > power on > reinstall. Also, if you've experimented with disabling services (and forgetting what was done) you may have killed a service needed for the correct loading of the HP drivers.

Hey, thanks, Man! I'll be sure to try restarting qlbctrl.exe next time it happens.

I did try the latest driver, it just made the brightness adjustment look different, but the bug is still there.

Knowing what the exe and services are should give me some options next time it happens. I'll get back here to confirm whether this works.

    Thanks again for your help!
