    Hi,

can someone do me a favor and post the normal "idle" core temperature of his 8470p (i7-3520M)?

Mine is running under Windows 7 and the CPU temperature is around 55 Celsius after a while
doing just very basic work (writing some emails, reading websites etc.), CPU utilization 5-8%.

This temperature already leads to increased fan speeds and a hot air stream coming out, which
is specially inconvinient when you are right-handed and use an external mouse.

A friend of mine has a 8470p with an i5 CPU, and the temperatures are roughly 10 degress lower.

    Thanks!

This is perfectly normal, at first i was also sceptic but they tend to run rather hot on idle conditions.
So you have nothing to worry, you can get it down with maybe +-5 degrees with a good repaste of the cpu but still your fine :).

    Nothing to worry

Thanks, but i´m not worried that the CPU may be getting too hot and finally dies or anything like this.

It´s just the noise of the fan and the hot air coming out on the right hand site all the time which really
    bugs me.

If this is really a normal condition for the 8470p with this CPU configuration, i will return it.

I have an i7 2670QM and i did a repaste with Antec Formula 7 and my idle temperatures are around 51-53C. I too am being bugged by the noise of the fan when it kicks in. I am running Windows 8, and i did notice in Windows 7 my idle temperatures are around 47C. A bit weird :/

I will do a fresh installation of W7 on a different hard disc to exclude the possibility that my current software installation is causing the mayham.

Beside from that: Is repasting really worth a try?

I am not sure what kind of paste HP uses from the factory, but i only noticed minimal difference between them at full load, so unless you really want to open up your laptop, i say not worth it. Perhaps invest in a laptop cooler, which should help the flow of air throughout the chassis of the laptop. Look for one with movable fans so you can position them where needed.
