    Let the experiments begin! :)

I'm trying to find the correct PLL using this thread, credits to Moral_Hazard.

If anyone has ideas - share them please :)

setfsb shows Byte 09=65. So bit6 (TME) is 1. Means it's TME locked to prevent software overclocking. So can't overclock using setfsb unless apply the warranty voiding TME-unlock PLL pinmod.

There goes my dream of becoming an OC'er, huh....
Would having a 940XM change anything?

Maybe ThrottleStop can help You with the extreme CPU.

Unlike the QM series, the XM are the extreme CPUs. Unclewebb tells us here:

The XM series have fully adjustable turbo multipliers and just as importantly, they have fully adjustable turbo TDP/TDC settings so even when fully loaded, these CPUs can be tweaked, with the help of ThrottleStop, to fully deliver the goods.

So the options for overclocking the HP8740w are (i) pinmod the PLL to disable the TME mode AND then hope setfsb supports the PLL or (ii) get a i7 XM CPU and use Throttlestop to run higher multipliers.

Thank you for the info! I'll probably go the extreme CPU route.

...lookin for a few extra FPS? ;) I am actually quite interested in how much processing HP can be squeezed outta this thing. Especially now that you can crank the fan on-demand.

I'm sure we could get quite a boost.
Problem is I don't have the budget right now, even for a ES 920XM, to try this. :( Will have to postpone the project for a couple of months.

i don't know anything about o/c'ing - just an area of computing that doesn't interest me too much

    Wow, that's great!
Assuming, you are ok with opening your system and messing with the thermal compounds, here's what needs to be done:

    1) you will need to install the new CPU and replace the stock thermal paste. The first little problem is that in order to get to the CPU, you have to remove the GPU Heatsink and as a result, replace the thermal paste on it 2 (I believe HP uses Shinetsu). I replaced all the paste with OCZ Freeze, but you can use whatever you like, provided it's not conductive or too bleeding.

2)contact UncleWebb for further instructions. You'll need ThrottleStop and SetFSB to play with TDP/TDC and Multipliers.

3)Don't forget to keep an eye on your temps. I wonder how a single fan will handle the increased heat.

Aikimox, u can overclock your 840qm, using what u mentioned setfsb.
just find out your clock generator for ur HP. once u know it. there is 3 values need to be changed and it will be overclocked. if ur gonna buy the extreme cpu then your all set, even more potential to OC :)

follow this link it works for non extreme cpus no problems:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/476426-m17xr2-overclocking-guide.html

ps. changed to these values (29/98/39) you wil know what i mean when u read the guide. then your 840qm will clock at 2.3Ghz(4 cores) 3.6Ghz (1core)

    good luck guys!
