The one thing lagging this notebook is the HDD which I'm looking at replacing with a crucial m4.

Ok it'll only get 3Gbps not the 6 as its an old SATA but you get the idea.

One thing worrying me is the captive nut on the original HDD and I don't see anything similar on the crucial SSD. What holds it in, just friction? Or is there a securing method not shown on the website? Just a bit concerned the SSD could work its way clear.

Also anyone know if there are any known problems around m4s in 8740s?

    thanks in advance
    Richard

I actually just installed a Corsair Force3 120GB SSD in an 8740w tonight. The captive screw you're mentioning is actually a part of the hard drive caddy. When you install the drive, you'll remove the caddy from your current drive, and mount it onto the SSD. It's actually a pretty easy install, as you only need to remove three screws to get the old one out (two on the plastic cover, and one on the caddy. The drive slips right out. Four screws hold the caddy to the drive. Swap them out, plug it in, and you're off and running.

Additionally, I don't know if I'm missing some step somewhere, but my Corsair SSD with a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro x64 is scoring the same as the WD Scorpio Black I just removed, 5.9. Any ideas?

Got the correct drivers? Update the chipset?

Is the SSD connected in ATAPI mode?

The SSD should be connected in AHCI mode for best performance.
AHCI mode is set in BIOS.
Install the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver(10.8.0.1003), only the driver via Device Manager, not the console.
    That's all.

Duh, yeah I meant AHCI mode not ATAPI. Showing my age now.
