Long story short. I want to install Server 2008 R2 & Hyper-V on this laptop and work entirely off of virtual machines.

I am down to these 'other devices'
    Ethernet controller <grrrr>
    HP Integrated Module
    PCI Siple Communications Controller
    and the infamous unknown device

Installing all the softpacks for Windows 7 cleared up most of the unknowns. LAN support is what I need the most as I don't want to install Hyper-V with out it. That and the activation period will lapse making the whole experiment moot.

Server 2008 drivers are not listed on the driver download page as what kind of idiot would install Server 2008 on a laptop?

    :)

I get the feeling I will be dropping back to Windows 7 and VM Ware...

    Server 2008 = Vista
    Server 2008 R2 = Win7

Try those drivers. It's possible that support page has several types of ethernet controllers listed, so either find a way to check what yours have or download them all :)

I downloaded and installed all the Windows 7 drivers, that is how I got this far.

    Ed,

You need to download the latest ProWinx64.exe from the Intel site. I just went through the same pain as you and this has got me up and running. Now I just need to resolve the Intel wireless card, shows installed, but no joy actually using it.

This exe contains the latest drivers for the Intel 82577LM adapter you have in your 8740w

The simple communications controller could be the intel AMT drivers as well.

As for the intel wireless, is wireless zero config turned on in services?

Tip tip, just setting up 8740w with server 2008 r2 and this was giving us grief.

I'm in the same situation as the OP now. I still have the same other devices without drivers. I also haven't been able to find some Nvidia graphics drivers that don't cause the laptop to crash booting up.

Dan, did you manage to get all this working? Anyone else?

    Ta,

    Rob

Okay, turns out there are known problems with the high performance Nvidia drivers and Hyper-V.

I scratch installed 2008 server r2 and installed the latest nvidia 64bit Server 2008 r2 specific drivers no problem. Aero enabled and running fine. I then added the Hyper-V role. No problem there either except I couldn't start a machine for complaints about bios settings.

Then I rememebered I hadn't enabled Virtualiation Technology in the BIOS. I updated that and then the machine fails to boot, it gets to the window loading screen and restarts prompting safe mode.

Disabling the VT option in BIOS restores normal service. But I still don't have access to Hyper-V, which means I will have to uninstall the drivers.

Any pointers from anyone who may have already wrestled with this much appreciated.

    Ta,

    Rob

If anyone is interested. I've installed SP1 RC, this seems to have fixed everything. Latest Nvidia graphics and Hyper-V have been stable since.
