The standard Seagate 320GB 7200.4 drive is quite noisy, it has a high level of ambient noise -- as in, when you turn it off you can hear a noticeable decrease in noise. It also has a lot of vibration. And on top of all that, performance is so-so. It's a good idea to replace it.
I have a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB (WD5000BEVT) and it is very quiet. However, performance is meh since it's a 5400RPM drive -- I think it is a bit slower in general use than the standard 7200RPM drive. If you are looking for a great 5400RPM drive, the Seagate 5400.7 640GB is supposedly the best out there -- quite fast and lots of storage.
For 7200RPM (which I recommend for performance reasons), I would point you to a Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB (WD5000BEKT) or Hitachi 7K500. I have the 7K500 in my 5310m and it is an excellent performer. It is quieter than the Seagate that came with the notebook and has very little vibration; a win-win in my book.

I must little redo my previous post, in that sense that I have newer line from Hitachi, exactly Z7K320, which is only 7mm thick. Otherwise is working splendidly, with more place for the rubber.
@PapaPrem
Thus this is the one which I can recommend. And generally SSD drives are very good and are getting cheaper every day. Take a look on these two Kingston SSD V+ and Kingston SSD V
The 5.4 drives are very slow for this notebook, I would like to argue you out of themIf you insist on the capacity get 7K500 as Charles said.
Note: For WD drives the acoustic mode can be controlled via WinAAM, it requires restart of the system and then you will be able to switch them into Silent Mode. For original Seagate or Z7K320 this is not possible.
Question, anybody here have any experience with some screen protector for this notebook?
(Not for keyboard, I know about this one and don't need it. Would like to protect screen only.)

I'm having a weird problem and was wondering if anyone on this thread has experienced this.
My machine is sitting on a desk for a couple of hours and I move it before attempting to use it; the touchpad stops responding for several seconds and, in some cases, will not respond even after several minutes. The workaround in that case is to put the machine into standby and then resume.
I thought the first part might have to do with HP's drive protection scheme but have no evidence for that belief.
Thanks. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
I have not experienced that problem. On a similar note, when I come out of standby it takes a couple of seconds before the keyboard and touchpad work. I have seen that on other systems but it is very pronounced on the 5310m.
What BIOS are you using? Try updating to the latest and see if that fixes your issue. -
Here they are normally in distribution - which is in the Czech Republic.
I executed three tests with disabled internet, explorer, firewall and hp related services. Avg. results are:
Seq Read 88.61 ___ Write 86,28
512K __ 29,77 ___ 34,32
4K ____ 0,352 ___ 0,720
4KQD32 _ 0,674 ___ 0,640
Settings were 5/1000MB
Also I noticed, that when idle it's whistling. Looks like some windows setting but have no idea which one cause that curse?
Is there another thread with more drives to draw a comparsion? -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There is actually a whole thread going on your hard drive:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...gle-platter-320gb-7200rpm-7mm-hard-drive.html
It's a pretty fast drive.
Whistling sound . . . that is probably the sound of the platter spinning. Not much you can do about that I'm afraid. It wouldn't hurt to ask in the thread I linked, though -- Phil would know. -
-
-
Yeah I have that delay too. Although I dont consider it a problem.

Can I get some comments on the quality of the webcam? I would be great if someone could post several pictures from the webcam under various lighting conditions and a video if they can be bothered, but any sort of comment will be appreciated.
My main concern is the quality of the webcam in a video chat. I have heard that some 1.3-2.0MP webcams are only able to do video at lower resolutions, like 0.3MP. It'd be great if you could clarify what resolution the webcam can do video chat at, if motions get blurred, and the clarity of the video. -

Hmm ... in looking at HP's website today I came across a reference that HP made a 6-cell 62 WHr battery for the 5310m. In googling this I have been able to find a few places making reference to such a battery actually existing and even a few machines that were sold with the 6 cell battery inside (one site estimated it gave around 11 hours of battery life iirc).
However, I have been unable to find a 6 cell battery for sale. Anyone know of a place that sells these?
Okay - I at least found a place that sells the battery. It's in Australia. Here's the page: http://www.spotit.com.au/buy/74353_HP_FL06_Notebook_Battery_BQ352AA.aspx
Here's another link to the same product: http://itelecshop.com/ecommerce.php...LETT-PACKARD&product=HP_FL06_Notebook_Battery
Vendor Code seems to be: HCN6757
And ... here's a listing from the HP website in England: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/sm/WF06c/A1-329290-329223-329260-329260-4196208-4196211.html

Hmm.... In looking at the physical shape of the batteries and at the battery in my 5310m they are very different. Was the 5310m available in the US physically different than the model sold elsewhere throughout the world?
On HP's Hong Kong website the battery is also sold, but it also says it is compatible with the Elitebook 8440p?! -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
There is a larger battery available for the 5310m. The six-cell battery is extended and sticks out the bottom, so it's not the most aesthetically pleasing add-on. Pictures of it are posted in this thread, see if you can find them.
Also, you should be able to get it from HP directly. I don't have the part # handy. -
Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
It's not that big a problem for me if the battery is not aesthetically pleasing.
Thanks for the feed back, though. I will look throughout the thread in here and see what I can find....

Edit: Wow ... Nicousse seems to have gone through the same thought processes I did and unfortunately got burned. AFAICT HP has still not corrected the listing error for the 5310m 6 cell battery part numbers, and it is still not available on the US website.
Here is the link to his post describing what happened: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...probook-5310m-owners-club-35.html#post6689200
However, I have noticed that the 5320m model is coming out soon (or is already available in some parts of the world) with i5 Intel cpu's. Who knows? Maybe the 6 cells will be more easily available in the US if the 5320m's become available?
At present I have only seen the 4 cell 4100 mAH batteries (and the 2800 mAH ones) available on eBay and other places. I would much prefer the 6200 mAH models though.... -
on another note, i have had this notebook for about 10 months, and it has been great.
it has survived falls, dings, and liquid damage.
so far the metal lid has a couple dents from my iphone hitting it, and the palm rest has a sharp edge on the right side now because it fell off my bed. it is sharp enough to scratch skin, making it a bit uncomfortable.
the liquid damage was when i had the notebook in a case in the back seat and a can of SunKist exploded all over it and soaked it for a good 5 min before i could pull over and dry it off. the only thing that was for sure done was the hard drive. but the notebook still worked after i took it apart [the basics] and cleaned it off with alcohol to get all the sticky residue off. now it turns on fine, and runs well the only problem is that there could be a short somewhere because the battery seems kind of loose and it shuts down if you hit it the wrong way. if i place a piece of card board in between the battery and the notebook it works fine.
other than that, i have decided instead of sending it to HP and having them fix it for an outragious price, i went out and bought another one, upgrading from celeron to core2duo [SP9300].
in the future i plan on purchasing an LCD from that website and trying to fix it myself. i have already looked over the repair manual and it seems pretty straight forward. i have taken apart my previous notebook [V3000z] to replace the lid, top cover, bezel, palm rest, keyboard and it was quite simple. the only thing was keeping track of all the different screws -
Ahbeyvuhgehduh Lost in contemplation....
Ack!
Sorry to hear about the screen damage!
Yes indeed ... most companies charge and arm and a leg for replacement parts, and the display screen is almost always among the most expensive of them. -
I've bought a used and unlocked Gobi 2000 from eBay, $55 USD with free shipping.
First I've installed the drivers (sp50075), then HP Connection Manager (sp44901) and I could connect to my Hungarian network. After modem has been set up with Connection Manager the connection has become available in connections tray window too (Windows 7 x64).
A location sensor is also available, but no software could get location info yet, although it is enabled in Control Panel. I could see in Event Log that access was requested.
Does anyone know if I need a driver or some special setup in order to have GPS working?

anybody have this issue? while updating my notebook i noticed a grey box in the middle of the screen towards the bottom. i cant remove it. what is it?

Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Does it go away after you restart?
Maybe one of HP's little utilities screwed up -- for example, the little bar that show sup when you change the volume. -
mmh, not sure if i should get a 5310m or wait for the 5320m. some talk about a spacebar issue and the 5320m has a 6 cell that will work better, but another thread talks about fan problems in the 5320m and cpu temps etc. so all in all, not sure what to do.
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The 5320m also has a built-in VGA port; the 5310m only has DisplayPort. Other than that, the only real difference is the CPU.
The spacebar problem should be fixed with newer 5310ms, and if not you can easily get HP to replace the keyboard under warranty. And of course, you can fix it yourself rather easily -- so I wouldn't consider that to be much of a factor.
The Core i3/i5 CPU does seem to run a bit warmer than the Core 2 Duo in the 5310m; that is only going to affect you if you are running the processor full-out (100% usage for extended periods of time). The original 5310m also gets hot as well, to be fair.
Lastly, the 5310m is available with a six-cell battery, you just have to buy it separately.
I would honestly boil it down to a price difference. The 5320m isn't even available yet on HP's U.S. site, so there is also a waiting factor involved. Check the HP Business Outlet and see what 5310ms are going for -- a while back they had Celeron versions going for $400. -
Hi, I can get a new one for 620 dollars, part type FM997UT#ABA. The issue is warranty, I am getting this shipped from usa to overseas, and so warranty will be an issue i assume (it will be local), so I need the spacebar to work. Does the part number above give any indication if the spacebar works?
thanks for your reply before. seems to me if its the same screen...etc, the ONLY real difference for me is the battery, and I can probably buy a 6 cell somewhere for it. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
HP business notebooks carry an international warranty:
So you are good to go.
And yes, you will have to buy the six-cell battery separately. -
charles, thanks.
really, the core i3 will give me a 15% boost maybe, whats the point, and i risk the 5320m having some other oddity!
the graphics...i wonder if that is improved since it will be on chip with the i3.
the battery, this is THE main reason for waiting, I am in two minds. Maybe the 4 cell works fine. I have a thinkpad that lasts an hour...and a 5102 that lasts...6.
Hi,
1. was going to buy FM997UT from USA. New. I assume it will have win7. Let me know otherwise.
2. The device will come with 320GB drive. I will want to replace immediately with a decent 7K500 and so how will I do this? can't just swap them out, need to somehow get the OS on the new one (taken from the thinkpad).
3. I hope it will use same charger as 5102.

The Intel HD graphics on the i3/i5 are better than the 4500MHD but still not good enough for games. I have no complaints about the 4500MHD, it works fine for everything else including HD video.
Some of the 5310m models come with Windows XP preinstalled however the XP license is just a "downgrade" from Win 7, and it comes with the Win 7 disc (mine did, at least).
Neither of those drives will work; the WD10TPVT is a 12.5mm height drive and the 5310m only accepts 9.5mm height; the second drive is for desktops only as it requires more power than a laptop can provide. Not only that, it would run too hot.
Look at a Hitachi 7K500 or Western Digital WD5000BEKT. Or, for a bit more, look at the Seagate Momentus XT. These three drives will work guaranteed. -
charles, you really are a star and a good reason for buying the laptop! loved reading your review.
So it comes with the discs, nice. A real rarity these days.
some performance charts here suggest no real advantage to the corei3/i5 chips over core 2 duo frankly.

It's kind of ironic the 5310m comes with discs since it doesn't have an optical drive.
I would just go with the 5310m . . . the i3/i5 are faster but as I noted, you have to wait for the 5320m and it is more expensive. -
trying to buy a 5310m is a little harder than expected, basically suppliers I have tried don't have any, HP have discontinued and I am a bit stuck (since i need it shipped to asia). i am assuming 5320m is right around the corner, maybe this week! i am waiting for more info from suppliers.

There are some in stock at PCSuperStore (where I bought mine):
Notebooks, Projectors - PC SuperStore
I am not sure if they ship to Asia, though. Also try CDW. Ebay may be your best bet after that.
And if the 5310m proves to be too elusive, either wait for the 5320m or consider a Toshiba Portege R700/R705. -
nope, the only time i didnt see it was in safe mode. but i did a system restore and only installed the drivers i needed. its gone now. -

There are pictures posted earlier in this thread; you can buy it from the HP Parts store. I am not sure of the exact part # though.
Glad to hear you got your driver issue fixed. -
Hey, everyone...
I've had the 5310m for a little over a year and I just ran into a problem today.
I just bought a monitor, a NEC EA231WMI, with a built-in displayport and I am having trouble connecting the 5310m to the monitor using just a regular displayport cable.
The odd thing is, I am sometimes able to get the two to connect. I am actually using the monitor at the moment. It did take me about twenty times, however, buts its working now. I've been troubleshooting for several hours and I haven't been able to find a noticeable correlation between steps work and steps that do not.
I've verified using other computers that VGA and DVI work fine on the monitor. So I fairly certain its not a monitor problem.
Initially I was using a $5 monoprice displayport cable and thought maybe that was causing an issue. However, after getting a grossly overpriced displayport cable from microcenter, I was still unable to connect the computer and the monitor.
I've updated to the latest intel graphics drivers from HPs website and installed a monitor driver from NECs webpage. At this point, I'm thinking its a software issue.
The only reference to a similar problem in this thread that I've been able to find is:
Does anyone have any similar experience connecting the 5310m to a monitor over displayport or any similar issues? Thanks. -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Hi rileston -- welcome to the NBR community forums.
You did most of the troubleshooting steps I normally suggest for such problems -- updating video drivers, etc.
Have you done a BIOS update yet?
Also, you are pressing [Fn] + [F4] to connect to the monitor, right? -

I have to admit, I haven't used my 5310m for more than a few minutes in some time. I have a lot of notebooks at the moment, too many to use on a daily basis. I figure it's not worth selling -- used computers aren't worth much -- so I'll keep it around for those times I want to use an ultraportable computer. -
I haven't had any of the physical issues that some others in this thread had
Processor is silent as well during normal tasks
I just switched over from a Dell Adamo 13 which I owned for 1 week and sold it (horrible keyboard), this 5310m is wayyyy better than the Adamo in every aspect!
I'm a very happy buyer right now!
And you're right, I got mine brand new for $560, so you probably won't be able to get much for a used one. -

Hmm ... after putting SP1 on the 5310m I have noticed that its performance seems faster somehow.
Anyone else experience the same thing? -
My 5310m has recently developed an issue where it no longer charges the battery.
I have multiple compatible HP AC Adapters and it won't charge on any of them, so I believe I can safely rule out an issue on that front. The battery status in Win7 reads "4% available (plugged in, not charging)" when I have it attached.
When I initially plug in the AC Adapter there is a red/orange light that flashes near the plug in place of the normal blue light that would come on if it were charging.
The battery was working fine, still holding a charge that lasted over 2.5 hours with normal usage prior to this issue arising.
I saw where someone in this thread had previously raised an issue similar to this, but it was barely covered and the issue seemed to be resolved by the AC Adapter.
I've really loved this laptop for the 16 or so months I've been using it and I'd hate to have to start looking for something new to try and fit my needs as perfectly as the 5310m has. -
is the warranty 1 year or 3 years? Also is it global?
