yeah, I'd like to know too. I've had my 5310m for over a year now and I've noticed a drop in battery life so I'm definitely looking to possibly upgrade.

Best source for 5310m batteries I have come across is via ebay and usually from Chinese retailers. The 8 cell battery (4100mAH), which is the most powerful battery available for the 5310m, can be found there for $49. I just purchased two of them a few days ago.

On amazon you can find the 4 cell 2800mAH batteries, iirc....

    Hello all!
First problem with my 5310m after 17 months :(

The last time I used my hp probook 5310m, I shut it down with the "hibernate" option.

Today, when I tried to turn it on, the fan went really noisy (like at full speed) and the screen didn't turn on neither. There were just a red light in front of the notebook and the battery led was red. I couldn't hear the hard drive working so I guess nothing was working.

As the fan was still running I pushed on the power button during several seconds to shut it down. It did shut down but the power led (not the red one, the white one, above the keyboard) was still on. So I removed the battery for 10 seconds, and then put it back.
Although there is no charging cable plugged in, the battery light is red. And the PC won't turn on...

+A friend of mine has the exact same computer. We tried with his battery and that didn't help (battery light red, can't turn PC on)

    What can I do?
Is there any tricky key combination to turn the computer on in that case?

    Cheers

    <strike>Hey guys.

I'm having problems after purchasing an SSD that I wanted to install in my 5310m. The SSD in question is a Corsair Force Series 3 120 GB.

I've installed the SSD, but it is not detected by BIOS or the Windows 7 installation program. Is there anything that I'm missing? Do I need to install some kind of driver? I've updated to the latest BIOS (F.0D), which didn't help.

Maybe the 5310m and the SSD I've purchased are incompatible?

    Any help appreciated.</strike>

    Edit: The drive was broken.

    Cheers
    Anton

    Hello there,
Nope, we couldn't find any solution... sadly.
We brought it to a local computer specialist who thinks that the issue comes from the part of the small part of the motherboard which controls the energy distribution.. :(
One solution might be to change the motherboard then..

    Hello All,

I just ran into a problem with my 5310m recently. I went to the HP website and tried to update a video driver and after i updated, my Aero is no longer functional on my laptop. Also, it seems like my HD video playback is a little more choppy than i remember.

    The latest driver is sp44877.exe

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my aero back on? I tried every windows setting and it seems like my driver has "decided" that my computer can no longer handle the Aero functions so its been shut off with no way to turn it back on.

Does anyone have the old driver that i can roll back too? Please let me know if anyone else has this issue and advice on how to fix this issue. Thanks.

Download the driver package from Intels webpage. It is most likely a newer build and it should run flawlessly (it does so on my computer).

Very good laptop, have been using it for a year now. But lately the fan has been slightly noisier than before, I guess there is some dust etc inside which needs to be cleaned. Hence a question - can one do a little bit cleaning inside of the laptop by himself?

    I have a problem.
My 5310m has some hairline cracks at the left display hinge...you can see them if the notebook is closed.
Does anybody also have the same material fatigue so I can talk to repair shop

And is it normal that windows say there are only 2,9GB to use?
    I have 4GB installed.

    @ Studiosus
You can use the manuell for disassembly...but beware of using a vacuum cleaner, you must hold the fan in position that he can not rotate...and use a bios update

    Hi guys,

I have big problems with my computer. It won't start. When I press the powerbutton the white light turns on for a second or two, then it turns black and nothing happends.
When I connect the charger the little light besides it doesn't turn on (the orange light is usually turned on charging).

I also experienced some strange problems before this happened. Windows warned me that my portable hdd wasn't running at the highest possible speed when connected to my usb-ports (guessing that windows believed that my computer didn't have any usb 2.0 port, just the old usb 1.0).
Then my computer clock changed time and date.

So what do you think? Is it just the charger that's broken or is it perhaps the motherboard or something like that?

I've tried to do the thing when you remove the battery and charger and long press on the power button but that didn't help.

Please guys I'm in desperate need for help!

    Thanks in advance,
    Andreas

sounds like your cmos could be corrupted, but the question would be how that occured.

Do you get anything on the screen, or do you hear the fan or anything, hdd etc when you power on?

only thing that concerns me is your RTC battery could be dead, but that shouldn't stop the computer from starting it should just tell you your settings are wrong.

You haven't done any bios updates recently have you?
only thing i can suggest is to do an 18 hour discharge, remove battery and power supply for a day, then plug power lead in and try to turn it on.

also, does the green light on your power brick come on? (if it has one) and if so, does it turn OFF when you plug it into the laptop?

The computer actually started now! Not sure if it will next time I try but now I at least got the chance to backup all my stuff.

But I'm wondering about the 18 hour discharge thing. I don't think my computer has been charged for the last day or so so perhaps the discharge thing was the reason why it started? I checked the battery level when it started and it was almost fully charged (95%). So low battery shouldn't be the reason why it didn't start?

Do you have any idea what went wrong?

    Thanks for the quick reply!

a bad battery calibration can screw with the bios sometimes. but it shouldn't have done that. you should calibrate the battery by flattening it (running it till the machine powers off) then charge it with the system being off

I'm trying to fix my sister's ProBook 5310m (I'm rocking a wonderful HP Mini 5102).

She said she was using it and it stopped charging. Then the battery ran out, now it is completely (yes, completely) unresponsive. She took it to a repair shop, they tested the AC adapter, and tried replacing the PCB where the adapter plugs in. No dice.

I just took a first look at it and immediately saw the battery cells popped (now bulging heavily) and don't know how the repair shop missed that. Probably what caused the problem?

I went ahead and tried replacing the motherboard with one I had ordered for ~$180. The rest of the laptop is in great shape and I'd hate to give up on it already since it's only a year and a half into it's life.

Any ideas on what could be the problem? Next troubleshooting steps?

Will a 5310m not receive power from the AC adapter when a battery is not plugged in or if the battery is blown? (The white status light next to the plug does not light up.)

    Thanks!

It'd be best to start a new thread concerning this matter. You will find more responses from others who don't have an HP 5310m but those who are knowledgeable in this area of laptop-atry.

Laptops are able to function without batteries if they're plugged in to the wall socket.

Thanks for the response V_Chip. Every laptop I've owned works without a battery plugged in, but figured this would be the place to check if it were the case with the 5310m.

I've got a MyDigitalSSD Bulletproof 32 gb card installed in the mini pci-e slot at the moment and it's not even registering in Windows. BIOS doesn't show any indication of a boot option for mSATA. I recently updated to the latest BIOS available on the HP site.

Kinda was hoping this would work. Does anyone have any ideas?

I havent used this notebook in a few months as I primarily just use my desktop. Today, after deciding to use the 5310m after such a long time, I noticed that both "Shift" and "Enter" keys are getting stuck whenever I press them. Anyone else had this issue? I never spilled anything on it as I probably only lighlty used this laptop less than 10 times in the past 2 years that Ive owned it. What would be the best way to fix this issue without causing any physical or water damage? Thanks!

P.S. I keep a piece of the thin foam (cut from the white packing cover that was used to protect the laptop while shipping) over the keyboard. This is to protect the screen and bezel from keyboard damage while traveling. Im not too sure if this would contribute to the problem.

You can easily pop the keys off of the 5310m, most all of them lift from the bottom lip (use a small piece of plastic to pry them up a little if you can't get it with your fingers--guitar picks work well). While this might not fix your problem--cleaning underneath--it's probably your best bet for doing anything before replacing the whole keyboard. The wider keys (caps, shifts, enter, bksp, and space) all have metal guides that keep the movement even. Make sure to clean that part off as well to ensure that's not why your keys are getting stuck.

I doubt the foam did anything.

Thanks. I gave that a shot and it worked for my Enter and Right Shift Key. I used Isopropyl Alcohol to clean under and around the key and the metal guides. However, removing the left Shift key was problematic. It was pretty tough to get off for some reason and I ended up breaking the retainer scissors clip underneath the key. Luckily, I was able to buy a malfunctioned 5310m keyboard from Ebay for about 7 bucks. I'll just use the retainer clip from the same key on there and have some spare retainer clips/keys to boot. Does anyone else here have a problem with the bezel getting scuffed up to due to the keyboard/frame hitting it while the laptop is closed? Im thinking the rubber protective bumpers just aren't large enough.

Has anyone been successful in getting Bluetooth working with 64-bit Win7? If so, where did you find the drivers?

sp44774.exe from hp.com has not been working for me.

I'd be careful with overheating, it might be the sign of something going wrong and using a cooling pad may mask the problem.
At least the vents and coolers should be cleaned properly.

I suspect my RAM module died because I delayed cleaning and the laptop got so heat 2-3 times that the autoprotect turned it off.

After cleaning the laptop isn't too hot except when CPU runs close to 100% for more minutes (i.e. Picasa is scanning faces and videos).
I'm using an 500 GB WD AV-25 drive instead of the original 7200 RPM one:
    WD AV-25
It feels that bottom is cooler where the HDD is compared to what I had before. It is also much more silent, it can barely be heared.
The specs may show it slower but in day to day usage I felt no difference. Same boot time, programs start in about the same time.

Have tried to install a Corsair single 8GB SODIMM, the 5310M didn't like it. Didn't want to boot. I'm not sure if this due to a faulty SODIMM, but i suspect it's just non-compatibility.

Anyone who did manage to get this module to work properly ?

    Today I tried a Transcend JetRam 8GB DDR3 204 Pin 1600MHz PC3-12800 SO-DIMM JM1600KSH module and boot failed.
Didn't even got to BIOS. Screen was black, only the power button was lit, and Caps Lock blinked about 5 times. No fans started, HDD was silent too.
RAM was not faulty, it works in other laptop.

The specification clearly states that only 4GB is supported, so I guess it's hardware or BIOS limitation. Either way there will be no support for more RAM, that would mean people wouldn't have to buy new laptop every 2 years and manufacturers would go bankrupt.

VAIO has a smart system. Some models have 4GB RAM integrated on motherboard, so by fitting 2 x 4GB modules one will have 12 GB RAM.

I couldn't find any postings through thread search and am therefore asking for help. I just installed an Intel 330 SSD 180GB in what I hoped would be an upgrade to the OEM Fujitsu 7200rpm. The Intel supplied migration software was a breeze to use and I'm running off the SSD and the WEI drive index is at 7.8 but there is no "wow!" feeling in terms of snappy performance.

Might this be because the CPU is a puny SU2300 or should I uninstall HDD specific software like the HP 3D Driveguard?

Also, the storage controller driver is the Intel ICHM9/M SATA AHCI version 8.9.8.1005 which might not be the latest though the Intel driver update utility is not offering an upgrade

    Thanks.

I thought I'd add some remarks even though the thread seems to be dead.

The laptop shuts off without warning when the remaining battery indicator is at 15%. I put back my hard drive and it will first give a warning to save data at 10% and then a hibernation notification at 7% battery life. I looked at the Advanced power settings for battery in Windows in both cases and they are identical.

For some reason, the Intel SSD is causing this shutdown without the intervention of the OS.

There's too much hype around SSDs. They are definitely one of the best things that happened to computers in the last 5-10 years, but it's not magic.
An SSD will not speed up browsing, streaming (YouTube) and anything else what requires network access.

It will also not speed up considerably apps what require lots of memory (i.e. photo editing). Such apps will be faster because pagefile access will be faster but still will require lots of pagefile access what is much slower then RAM.

One of the biggest problems with this laptop is that 4GB RAM is not really enough for Windows 7, whatever disk one uses Windows 7 will struggle with this amount of RAM.

Despite of the above the boot time is considerable faster with an SSD (I have 256GB Samsung 830), apps will start up faster, Picasa is lot faster, but really don't expect miracles.

Has anyone managed to remove the keyboard? I followed instructions on page 4-22 of service manual, but I failed at step 5 (Lift the rear edge of the keyboard until it rests at an angle) because it seemed that it's either glued either screwed to something and I was afraid that it will crack if I force it.

I've noticed the faster boot times too, though, since I usually only put the machine to sleep rather than powering it down, it is not important for me. On the other hand, I've now gotten used to not hearing/feeling the spinning/seeking of the hard drive.

I might spring for a newer battery since BatteryBar is showing 44% wear on mine. Maybe even the elusive higher capacity battery from the 5320m!

I've just tried to install 8GB memory module (original from HP) in my 5310m - fail.

Other question - did anyone have a success story of installing mini-PCIe SSD in place of WWAN module?

I'm having the same problem in Ubuntu and with a (IIRC) Crucial SSD. Battery life is absolutely horrible after going SSD, the OS no longer detects the battery is nearly discharged, and the laptop just dies at about 15%. Even stranger is the fact that it now uses a lot more power when sleeping - one or two days of sleep is enough to have nearly emptied the battery.
Considering going back to the old drive, even though it makes the laptop hum like a weary old transformer on some tables.

too_much_rope, I got a new battery and that seems to have solved my shutoff problem. It might be the case that the battery voltage droops more with age and the SSDs are more sensitive to that than hard drives.

I am usually plugged in overnight so haven't noticed anything unusual about current draw during sleep.
