So I have a line on a DC display for my 8770w. The seller wants $700 for it. I keep hearing how amazing these screens are, but are they $700 amazing or will I have buyers remorse at this price? These things are so hard to come across now I feel almost obligated to buy it, but I guess I need that extra push.....

If I get this with the colorboard, can it be replaced only taking apart the display housing or do I need to tear apart the whole notebook for the replacement?

I guess I'll find out how amazing it is for myself because.... I bought that SOB.

It will certainly be a major improvement over the TN panel thats inside at the moment

Interesting update. Seller tested display before shipping and found 3 dead pixels so they are replacing just the panel with a brand new one. I assume that means that the color calibration stored on the color card will now no longer be correct for the new panel that's being installed. Do I need the HP branded Dreamcolor calibration kit to get it recalibrated?

No, you can use something less expensive, like a Spyder Express. I have a Spyder4 Express for my DreamColor displays and it works great.

With the 1080 yes great difference but if you are after the 4k version you won't notice it.

What a complete fiasco my DC attempt has been / is / was..... I'm going to go nuts.

So after purchasing the screen the seller told me they checked it for issues and found 3 dead pixels so they ordered a brand new panel to replace it with. Fine, extra week for a new panel, that works. 2 weeks go by and I still have no screen so I try to contact seller, no response. Open a ticket with eBay and seller responds that they shipped the screen to the wrong customer. A couple days of them tracking it down goes by and they locate it, send the person a label, and it's on its way to me finally.

The screen comes in today. Upon first visual inspection the screen is flawless, both the front of the panel and the 8770w case top looks brand new, sweet! Takes me about an hour to get it installed. Power up for the first time and as the screen flicks on I notice a big green blob bleeding through in a part of the screen when the screen is black! That instantly infuriates me but I go ahead load Windows, you can't notice the green blob unless it's on black, at this point I'm nearly contemplating keeping it just due to how amazing the screen looks and the time and money invested. I open up eBay (white bg) to send the seller a message about the green blob and then I notice about 5 dead pixels!!! I took pix for documentation, shut down, and put my old screen back in much to my chagrin.

I guess I'm not destined to DreamColor...... :(. Sending this garbage back to where it came from tomorrow. Sad day here, it really was a phenomenal looking display leaps and bounds ahead of the TFT junk I have back in it now.

Link below to pix of the problems with the screen. eBay sellers name is overstock4you and I highly advise steering clear even though he has some hard to find stuff listed. All is not what it seems.

I am giving seller one last chance. He is replacing the panel once again and sending it back. Fingers crossed that this panel is good.

    Congratulations!

Put it in Native color mode and then calibrate it with the Spyder Express. Post up the results. :)

To see the best results it should be calibrated with the HP Advanced Profiling Solution, which is no longer on production. The reason is unlike other calibrators, the HP APS stores the resultant profiles data in the screen Dreamcolor Color Engine so that you still get the full 1 billion colors. Otherwise if you do it in the video card the nuber of colors is reduced.

Thank you for the clarification. I still haven't gotten around to thinking about calibrating yet. Being pulled too many directions right now.

We just got a new unit today delivered at top spec and to my surprise the screen is much better it's a sharp144c screen but the brightness is automatically 100% and almost equiv to the gen2 in 4k.

Sorry if I'm derailing this thread, but is it possible to fit a GTX 980m on a 8760W? If so what manufacturer should one look for? I.e. GTX 980m made for Dell/Clevo?

Absolutely, it's really simple actually. These threads will get you started:

8760 and 8770 are for all intents and purposes the same machine.
