It is possible to upgrade the HP 8440W CPU to a Core i7-920XM. The notebook is currently have the Core i7-620M and 4GB RAM.

When I power up VMWare Workstation 7, my notebook slow down. Any idea why?

Socket type is identical. So it must work.
what slowdown are you talking about. be more specific. Check memory/processor usage. Provide screenshots. You can download Defraggler - Standard for defragging files and check if paging file is fragmented. other tweaks.

920XM will run extremely hot even if it works. The cooling on 8440w won't handle the heat. Don't even bother.
