    Hello!
I have an 8740W with intel i7-720. I'm interesting to replace this processor with Intel i7-640. It' possible? the mainboard of this configuration support the dual core??

    Thanks

yep it's possible to go from a quad core to a dual core, but remember you are limiting the speed of the memory to 1066Mhz, as well as only being able to use 16GB (max) of ram.

    good luck.

hiya what bios are you running on the notebook?

and are you running 4 memory sticks?

I wasn't able to get a 640M to test, so it might be a bit different to the 620M

Sorry to hijack the discussion, but is there any word on accomplishing the opposite - placing a quad core CPU into a dual core MB? My elitebook has an i5-520M. If I also get a quad core heatsink and stick to 8GB ram combined, would it work in theory? Or is an i7-620M as high as I could go?

yea, take 2 modules out and it'll work.

seems the 640M won't work with 4x4 modules

As long as your elitebook has dedicated video, then yeah it'll work. Otherwise you'll find out that you have no video, because the Gen1 quad mobiles don't have integrated video.
