I called HP the other night inquiring about a 128GB SSD for an EliteBook I was thinking about buying, and the guy couldn't tell me who the manufacturer was.

He gave me a part number (WX806AV) but a number of generic SSDs come up in Google on websites without pictures claiming to be HP SSDs.

Does HP make their own brand? Or is it a Samsung or Intel SSD with an HP sticker slapped on to it?

    Thanks

This. Could be something else too, depending what they get cheapest :)

I guess also it depends on supply and so on. So the manufacturer of the "WX806AV" could change over time...

Well I would like to know what I'm buying before I purchase it.

Dell was able to tell me beforehand. Why not HP? Is it a secret?

In general, lower level support personnel are reading from a manual...if it is not in the manual, they won't know the answer to it.

Have you tried getting to someone higher up the "food chain"(managers etc)?

for the 8730w there was once a firmware update for the Intel SSD so somewhere the information is stored. (but if they used also a different SSD which got no firmware update you still don't know if they only used Intel and still don't know the model...)

Yeah, I did. Her supervisor (in India) didn't know, either. lol...

It turns out they are useless. That's why I came on here and asked. I'd have more faith in you all identifying what make SSD drive they use than I would from HP.

As far, as i know in HP one can find only Intel and Samsung SSD. If it is 128GB SSD it must be Samsung. It is version of samsung 470 from consumer market.

So HP just slaps it's own sticker on it and calls it an HP SSD?

I knew they didn't make their own which is why I asked. Especially if I bought an EliteBook and needed to know more information about it.

    128 are Samsung 470

and own firmware, what means that you can upgrade only firmware provided by HP. As far as I know HP firmware for Samsund do NOT support TRIM: HP Communities - ProBook 6454b - TRIM supporting firmware for Samsu... - Enterprise Business Community.

It is better to buy SSD separetly.

I agree. I made a mistake when I bought my 8740w with a SSD on the primary bay. My Micron (stock drive) 256G SSD has a custom firmware not upgradeable with Micron firmware updaters. I contacted Micron and they told me that if HP don't release a new firmware upgrade, I will not be able to upgrade my SSD. Big fail. On the other hand, you can safely order a hard disk (mechanic) and you should have not any problem (I have a Hitachi 500G hard drive, ordered with the system, with normal firmware).

On a side note: Samsung drives ALREADY support TRIM, granted. That thread is old (I sent a post long time ago in that thread as "Chema P.") and HP is shipping Samsung SSDs with TRIM since some time ago. I had a stock Samsung SSD, included in an old 8740w, and it had TRIM (the drive died prematurely though).

My 8760w model LG673 came with a 256GB Samsung SSD and supports TRIM.

Yes, Samsung SSDs have (probably had) TRIM , but crappy HP BIOS (since F.20 release) did not pass through any Secure Erase command to storage devies.
