The only question is will there be a 16:10 screen in a 17" elitebook in the future or will they also go to 16:9? (Most likely, they will.)

Unfortunately 16:10 screens have pretty much gone the way of the dodo and they aren't coming back.

    Basically.

16:10 went the way of the dodo in 2009; almost 100% of the new notebooks that have come out since then have been 16:9.
Considering Dell is going 16:9 with their next iteration of the 17" M6500, HP will too. :(

Even external monitors are nearly all 16:9 now.

Number one reason, as is usually the case, is economics. Going back a couple of years when the transition was taking place, manufactures realized they could cut more 16:9 screens than 16:10 from the same standard substrates. More screens equal more profits with no major increase in capital costs for machinery to increase the size of the substrates.

Number two reason is probably entertainment. More and more people are using their desktops or laptops for viewing it. And the standard entertainment HD geography is 16:9. Even when the geography is wider, the 16:9 format gives a better presentation with less overall black space.

Though I, like most of us here, prefer the 16:10 (my 8740w), using my 8540w as my main mobile machine has taught me to appreciate 16:9. Constant usage for all applications trains my eye to see in that aspect ratio while envisioning video production. The old adage ". . . make lemonade" applys.

my 28" tv is 16:10 and any video I watch is stretched to 16:10 on my 8510 no black space , and so much better for everything else , maybe 5% of my time is watching video . Guess I.m stuck getting the MSI l15 laptop . :-(
