    I have broke mini pci wifi card on mine 8540p during panel replacement.
    I found here on market broadcom 94311 and intel 4965agn card. Can I use them or only intel 6200 or broadcom 94322, officially supported in service manual.
    thanks

    non-whitelisted card will NOT work in HP notebooks, so either get the whitelisted one or try to find a non-whitelisted BIOS. I guess it's easier to simply get one of the "permitted" cards.

    I suggest getting either the 6200 or 6300. in my experience these work very well even in case of pretty bad wifi signal.

    my 8540w has a 6300 Ultimate. I have also changed the original crappy 1000-N for a 6200 in another machine, a 6450b.

    important: take care to get the HP/Lenovo version and NOT the other ones!
    HP/Lenovo parts share the same hardware, the cards even have both the HP and lenovo part numbers printed on the stickers. In fact, the Intel 6200 I have installed in that 6450b was actually taken out from a Lenovo (!) business-class laptop!

    There is no modded non-whitelisted bios for the xx40 or xx60 Elitebooks nor is there going to be one anytime soon due to HP making those bios RSA protected. They've even set a trap for older xx30 and xx10 Elitebooks so upgrading to F.20 or newer results in a RSA protected bios being written without being able to roll back to the older version. Can't believe they paid a bios programmer to create engineered sabotage with these older systems.

    Well it indicates HP wish for users to upgrade systems to gain newer comms tech rather than upgrade wifi/wwan components. It's nasty stuff and should be illegal imho.

    good to know, never actually needed to use non-whitelisted BIOS, but...

    concluding from my experience (not with a hp 8540w though, since mine has always had a 6300 ultimate) - the thinkpad part is exactly what you need to get. mine was also taken out from a thinkpad. should be something like this one:
    Mini PCI-E Cards :: 802.11N :: HP/Lenovo Intel Advanced-N 6200 Mini Card-622ANHMW-FRU:60Y3191 - JUSTOP.COM - Computer Hardware, Laptops, Notebooks, Desktops, TFTs, Printers, Servers, Wireless Networking, Software

    (note it has both the hp p/n 572509-001 and lenovo FRU 60Y3191)

    Yes! I think so.., because its one of the best i have seen in recent days and its my next laptop. Really good enough specs to warrant an upgrade and not too expensive but I would like to wait for a price drop.
