i have an Elitebook 8530w laptop with Windows 7 x64 SP1 and i have recently purchased a gobi2000 wwan card. the card does not run up front so i had to patch the bios wo whitelist it. everithing went well to this point.

i have downloaded the latest drivers from the Elitebook8540w laptop on HP website and proceded to the instalation. It installed 4 devices in Device Manager. One in ports, one in modems, a network card and some System device.

    The WWAN card works perfectly.

The GPS does not. I am missing the NMEA driver and i cant seem to find out how to install it. It doesent show in Location and sensors nor does the NMEA driver appear under ports in Device manager as it should (from what i have read). I have tried modifying the install file to DEV1=GPS=1 and 0, reinstalled windows, etc. nothing works. Please advise.

i am also attaching a picture of my WWAN card [IMG]

i may be on the wrong path, but have you installed HP connection manager and actually turned it on

by default the GPS is hardware turned off until you enable it using hp connection manager.

use the one on the page for the 8740W its a newer revision.

secondly, which driver version are you using? 18 or 19?

    Thanks.

i have upgraded my drivers to the ones you advised but there is no change. I do not have any entry in my HP connection manager for gps. also i have discovered that there are only 3 children in the usb composite device in device manager.

i do not know that you are refering about driver version 18/19.

    attaching some pictures to help

    hiya again.

ok your connection manager looks very much different to mine. you should see if there is an update you are missing.

because, gps is under the actual WWAN section.

i haven't got it installed on my machine, and i have no gps either.

so you need to install a newer version.

    hang on
    HP Connection Manager V4.1

This is the one i recommend you to use, as its made for the un 2420

and are you using this driver?

    --- update ---

just installed the 23 driver, and it's installed my GPS. it's in the location sensors area of win 7

so should fix your issues (still haven't got connection manager installed!)

hey there. i have the exact drivers specified in your links. the reason connection manager doesent look the same is that maybe they have it themed or something. you can see the above pictures with the version number of hp connection manager.
could this be a hardware problem. can it be that the gps part might be damaged and the wwan is not ?

yes unfortunatelly that does not appear for me. this is the problem i'm having cause i dont know why it's not there. do the maybe make a version of the board without the gps? this is the attacked picture of my ports and there are no undetected devices. i even tried adding that nmea port as legacy driver and it wouldn't work.

there are some of the earlier boards without GPS yes, but they are hard to spot. can you do me a test.

Connect to your mobile broadband, and reinstall the driver (while it's connected)

when you connect it switches the gps on.

its the final thing i can think of, otherwise you just are unlucky with the card :(

thanks for your help. it appears that i am indeed unlucky with the card. if i wanted to make sure this is one of the older cards is there any way i could check it up, other than the fact that it has no gps.

No problems. Can install the non-whitelisted bios and use a $30 MC8781 with GPS off ebay with better connectivity software imho.

    See:
    (1) unwhitelisted 8530W bios
    (2) 2530P: Adding a MC8780/MC8781 3G/HSPDA WWAN card with GPS

    update
i got a replacement for said card and the GPS still does not work. I was already using the moded BIOS as Gobi2000 was blacklisted on my model.
The prices for the Gobi2000 are arround 20 quid which should be comparable to $30.
I am now thinking of buying a gobi1000 which should work out of the box as its the card provided by HP for my model. i have a few questions though
Does gobi 1000 have a gps?
do you think it would work once i change it or it might be something with the 8530w series and they dont allow GPS?

    also:
i am planing on using just the windows interface for the GPS and i want it installed in the control pannel->sensors. does the sierra card provide better performance than the gobi?

hey. you need to get a modded bios that whitelists foreign hardware(as in not certified by HP for that model). i dont remember where i found mine but you should be able to find one with some google searches.

If I enable the card GPS on an HP notebook, and then I install this card in another nootebook (non HP), will its gps works?
Is it possible to enable this GPS without using HP software?

Thanks and sorry for bumping up an old post.
