that's because it's not for the envy 15 11xx series. the latest bios for the envy 15 11xx series is F.2B. look at the first page of this thread for the link, if you dont already have it.

It won't install on mine. It gets to setting up devices then crashes. after a lot of searching it seems the 4830 graphics card is causing the problem.
Until HP release some fix/drivers for windows 8 and the envy 15 with the 4830 graphics card it doesn't look good for windows 8 for me.

I'm running windows 8 on mine no problems at all. I just selected the windows 8 drivers for the video card from AMD's website and everything worked. Had to turn off adaptive brightness in power control settings to get the monitor to want to go to full brightness but otherwise it all works.

How in the world did you get Windows 8 installed? Did you do a complete format of the HDD and then install Windows 8 straight up? OR, did you upgrade to Windows 8? If so, which version of Windows 7 where you running before? Was it the HP supplied image or a different one?

I am having serious issues with my laptop. I cannot get Windows 8 Pro installed. I purchased the upgrade version and I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Pro that HP supplied with my laptop. I tried with my old installed which didn't work so I tried going from a fresh recovery image and it still didn't work. I then tried a fresh install with absolutely no drivers and it still didn't work. I then tried a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro except from a standard image that has no HP bloatware or anything like that. Still doesn't work.

I've tried pretty much everything imaginable and it still doesn't work.

Pretty much I'm about ready to through my laptop out the Window and get a new one. This is ridiculous!

If anyone can help, please let me know, I'm open to any suggestions. I'm going on a trip with some family next week and I'm trying to get it fixed before then, but it's not looking that way. Hmmmm

    Thanks guys

Like I said, I've tried going driver-less and it still BSODs or locks up at 90% in preparing devices.

I will try this once more and if I cannot get it to work I may have to just make a complaint straight with Microsoft due it it's fail install.

Also, that thread isn't much help to anyone due to the people not stating which drivers their actually installing.

AMD has NO official Windows 8 drivers for the HD 4xxx series cards, but they do have a beta unsigned version. With that version installed my computer will not boot into Windows 7 so I can do the upgrade, all it does it BSOD.

When they talk about the Windows 7 graphics drivers from 2009 I have no idea which ones they're talking about without a version number or something like that.

    ------------------------

I have had these issues since the first preview of Windows 8, and the developer preview and up.

Seems like it's definitely a graphics issue since it always goes black and never turns the screen back on and then says the install failed. I don't know what the install of Windows 8 is doing when it's "preparing devices" but at %90 it always does the lock up thing. It must be going through one by one preparing my PCs hardware, like USB, ethernet, audio, WIFI, graphics, and so on. It's safe to assume it checks the graphics card at %90, haha.

    ------------------------

I really want this to work so I will continue trying tomorrow and if I get it working I will make a real how to on how to get it running. All of the info I have found online regarding this topic has been useless due to the peoples vague answers.

    Thanks again!

This other user user PM'd this message about this which I think he won't mind me reposting here:
"Yes I managed to get Windows 8 installed. It was one hell of a struggle though. Basically I created a virtual machine of windows 8, then set the machine to not automatically update the hardware drivers from within system properties. I then made a clone of the virtual machine using clonezilla to an external hard drive. Rebooted my envy with the clonezilla disk in the DVD drive and restored the image I created earlier to my envy hard drive.
After it rebooted, I just installed the latest HP ATi drivers and everything seems fine. I've been using it for about a month now with no problems.
I hope this helps you out. I noticed HP state they won't be developing drivers for any computer made before October 2011. Not good support from them."

That was me. After a lot of looking around and finding the log file for the failed windows 8 upgrade I came to the conclusion that the best idea was to get a working image of windows 8 in a VM (not driver specific so I can remove any SID's). After cloning the VM to my hard drive it was fairly straight forward to install the Windows 7 drivers supplied by HP. As I said when I PM'd N123 HP don't have any plans to try and fix their mistake of using a custom ATi card in their motherboard. Unless Microsoft find a way to get the HP drivers to install (not going to happen as its relatively few people with this issue) at the detecting and configuring devices stage of windows 8 setup, we're going to be stuck with a machine that can't be upgraded. I only went through that much trouble as I don't like to be beaten, and I'm the one who has to fix the computers at work.

Thanks Andy. Can you use your method with an *upgrade * copy of windows 8? I.e. will it be possible to install an upgrade Windows 8 copy to the virtual machine if your original copy of windows 7 is On the computer running the virtual machine?

Ah, that process makes sense. The issue is, my copy of Windows 8 Pro is strictly an upgrade. When you created this virtual machine of Windows 8 did you go straight to Windows 8 with it or did you create a virtual machine of Windows 7 and then upgrade it?

The thing I'm confused about is when I installed a clean install of an OEM version of Windows 7 Pro (not the supplied HP recovery disk or partition) I still had the issue. I did not install any drivers or anything!

But I do know that Windows 7 loves to install drivers automatically. Does even standard Windows 7 while installing go online and download the HP driver automatically?

I see your guys are removing this 4830m driver that is installed, but I'm confused at to where in the process I would do this. Since I'm trying to upgrade, would I do that before I try the upgrade or during it?

Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate that people are still willing to help out with an almost 3 year old Envy! :)

In order to use the upgrade you need to have an OS to upgrade from. I used the full RTM version when I installed it to the VM. I would suggest installing windows 7 in VMWare player. Then upgrading it to windows 8. As its a VM the hardware is generic, it doesn't see the ATi graphics card as an ATi graphics card, just a standard VGA compatible graphics card.
And no, the standard installation does not automatically go online to get the latest updates at installation without your permission. You can specify which drivers to install during the installation process using an answer file, but as that is a whole lot harder.

andygb40 is a computer Ninja!! Great work figuring out that cloning a Virtual Machine Win8 to the laptop HDD will get Win8 working on ENVY 15 1xxx. I have the same notebook and am typing this in Win8 right now.

Would you mind elaborating a bit on the process to get the ATi Mobility HD 4xxx drivers installed? I have tried installing both the HP supplied Win7 driver named sp48247.exe and the AMD driver found here:

    AMD Catalyst

If I install the drivers with the graphics card disabled the installation fails. If I enable it first, then install I get a blank screen and frozen system.
Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated by myself and the many other 1st Gen Envy users.

Also, another issue I'm having is that when I installed Win8 originally in VMware 9 I entered my windows product key and everything went fine. Now that I am running Win8 natively on the ENVY and windows wants to be activated it is asking for my product key and it now says it is invalid?? I am thinking this has to do with the change from virtual hardware to real hardware having different IDs or something. Did you or other members have this problem?

You can call Microsoft and explain this to them and they should make an exception for you to reinstall.

I have the SP48247 drivers installed. I ran the program, but canceled the ATi install. Then went to C:\SWSETUP\SP48247\ right clicked the Setup file and changed its compatibility to Win7 in the properties tab. Then ran the setup file as administrator.
Everything went fine from there on.

As far as the activation bit goes, I didn't have this problem. I did use the full version not an upgrade version though. But as Starrbuck says: call Microsoft. they should be able to help you out.

Thanks andy!!! I realize now that I have tried to install an upgrade version as a fresh install. I will go back and redo the process of creating a virtual machine and cloning to the laptop harddrive but this time starting from win7 and then upgrading. That should remedy the activation problem. Then I will try your advice about the video drivers. Thanks again.

When I restored the image of the VM back to the harddrive, it booted with standard VGA. All of the setup had been done in the VM and as I had stopped Windows from automatically updating device drivers from the system properties the only drivers that were there were the standard VGA display drivers. I installed the HP SP48247 drivers from this point.

Thanks again Andy. Does anyone out there know if there is a way to instruct Win8 to not detect and install video drivers during the installation process. Possibly with some kind of installation script?

Andy: what sort of virtual machine client did you use for this upgrade process? --did you just use the built in "Windows Virtual PC" that you can download for Windows 7, or did you use some other virtual machine client?

Andy, if you set Windows 8 in VMWare Player to not update drivers, then after you clone it back to your laptop hard drive, you have to go the HP website to manually install all the original HP Envy drivers, correct? Do all the old drivers work with Windows 8--ex. quiick launch buttons with dim/brighten screen, Intel turboboost, etc ?

In short, yes. I installed all of the drivers (that were missing-device manager is your friend!!) using the original manufacturer drivers eg Intel for chipset and WiFi. Use the download links from page 1 of this thread for the drivers you require. All of the quick launch buttons work fine.

Andy, thanks for your reply. Did you install *any* drivers to the virtual machine (example Intel chipset) before cloning with Cloneziila, or did you perform *all* Driver installs *after* you cloned the virtual machine to your external hard drive?

All of the drivers were installed once I had managed to restore the VM to my hard drive. I was expecting to have to try again, but thought give it a go and see what it finds. Just as a point of interest, I now have the computer set to install drivers automatically (once I'd installed all that were missing) and there so far hasn't been any problems. I do create restore point regularly though as I like to keep a recent restore point available should Windows decide to do anything stupid.

    • Removed: Intel WiFi Link driver, version 15.5.0.42 for Windows 8.
    • Removed: Intel WiFi Link driver, version 15.5.3.43 for Windows 8.
    • Added: Intel WiFi Link driver (and software), version 15.3.50.2 for Windows 8.
    • Updated: IDT High Definition Audio driver, version 6.10.6425.0.

The Intel WiFi Link v15.5 drivers for Windows 8 have been removed from the first post. Did some research and it looks like these are not currently compatible with the specific Intel wireless adapters that are used in this series.

I have the Envy 15 with the M5830 gfx card. Everytime I try to install new gfx drivers I get the BSOD. I have researched this issue a lot and people seem to think that this should only be an issue if you have the 4830. How can you get it to work properly for the 5830? I can provide more details of my setup if need be. I hope someone can steer me in the right direction.
