Thanks Serg, but it actually makes things more confusing:

That is where I got the info I posted earlier and my " Intel PM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B03 " shows the driver is a Microsoft driver version: 6.1.7600.16385 When I try to update driver it says it's "the best driver for your system is already installed"

The 9.1.1.1013 only shows as the driver for: "Intel processor DRAM controller - 0044" and also the "Intel processor PCI Express Root Port - 0045" All the other chipset / CPU releated drivers show as the same MS 6.1.7600.16385

So I'm wondering if I should try and reload the chipset driver from the original SWsetup folder, upgrade directly to one of the newer versions from the opening page or just be safe and leave it the way it is since it seems to be working just fine??

Can any other i5 540M owners please verify what driver you show in device manager for the "Intel PM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B03" ??

@JJB: The Intel Chipset Device Software version is hard to verify, because it is mainly what is used to designate the version of the overall package. The package itself includes drivers for a lot of components and all of them have their own version schemes. I will tell you though that the driver up on the first post is the newest official package to date, and is thus safe to conclude that the component drivers inside the package are pretty much the newest (with the exception of the Intel ATA controller drivers, that's why there is the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver).

    Updates:

    03/26/2010
    • Updated Intel Rapid Storage Technology (SATA AHCI) driver to version 9.6.0.1014.
    • Updated information for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 / 5830 driver.

Success!!! ATI 10.3 drivers installed with no problems! I'll give them some time to check stability so far, but installation was done easily and quickly with no hassles.

    EDIT: BSOD

Thanks for the info on the chipset driver. Followed your '-overall' instructions (on page 1) and it worked perfectly :) I am now running version 9.1.1.1025 and all is running smoothly so far. It looks like several of the system devices with 'intel' updated from the Microsoft drivers I was seeing.

    @thedankone

For the latest drivers for the touchpad, you need to erase all drivers already existing. All of the synpatics drivers. Restart your laptop, and run in MS' ones, which are choppy...install the new ones. Restart the laptop. And voila!

It takes a little time, but once done it runs nicely. Though you'll need to reconfigure your touchpad again on all personalized settings...

    Hope this works!

So I checked mine and realized I was running the same you were running (from 2006). I assume that 2006 version came from the swsetup drivers? I am quite sure that's where I installed them from originally. But it's still mind boggling that they would be that old, cmon 2006?

Anyway, I went ahead and updated with the one posted here and the -overall flag. Now, for some reason I am showing 9.1.1.1022 (I was expecting to see 9.1.1.1025) At least these are from 2009 :)

Well I am almost certain the MS '06 ones came from the SWsetup folder since the first thing I loaded after clean install was that chipset driver (unless windows update did it but I think I would have noticed that).

As for the version # difference I would guess it is correct for your 820QM, I have the 540M and if you read 'Justinkw1's' post above, it sounds like the update has several versions and finds the appropriate one for your specific configuration.

I noticed the BIOS updates are no longer availiable on the FTP site. HP also no longer have them on their Support site.

I'm on the F19 BIOS and the fan just goes nuts on my config with the CPU temps spiking even with no load. I hope HP fixes this soon.

PS: Justin, you may want to gray out the BIOS for now.

I have now removed all of the BIOS update links from the first post, as HP has now removed them from the FTP site. This was an expected move pretty much -- a new BIOS update should be released soon. :D

I got a problem with my touchpad: After I disable it with the top left disable zone, I can't turn it on again. Must do it manually or logout.

I'm using driver 15.0.9. I tried uninstalling, reboot, installing with external usb mouse (windows drivers didnt install by itself), reboot.

When I double tap, I get an sign fading out in the center of screen, that touch pad disabled, and the led turns orange, but no matter how do I tap on it again, it wont turn on.

I had to go to the mouse options to anable it. Then I get the fading sign that touchpad anabled, and the led turns off.

^ Instead of double tapping put your finger above that amber light for a few seconds and it will enable.

The enable/disable system requires you to maintain your finger touching the LED for approx. 5 secs for it to work.

For sure, keeping it at 25% from left (eww, dunno how else to say that) is the best option for me. Takes a 2 second hold.

    OK I'm baffled

You are talking about the 15.0.9.0 synaptics driver ??

    1) I can not re-enable the touchpad no matter what after I disable by double tapping upper left. I have to reboot (with power button) or use a mouse to go to synaptics panel and manually clicking enable.

    2) I have no options that I can see for adjusting the timing on how long you need to hold your finger to enble. All I have is 'disable touchpad' or disable for 1 session' and an overall disable the 'tap to disable' feature.

Both of the above are with the default install of 15.0.9. And the settings do not offer any 'tap zone' features.

If I go to device manager and select 'choose from a list' of drivers I can load 3 other options that are still shown as 15.0.9 versions but they offer the 'tap zone' options but no option at all to disable the touchpad

All I can think of is that there are at least 2 device ID's for the actual touchpad on the envy's. SYN1E18 (gen1 I think) and I have SYN1E24. Could someone who has the 'timing adjustment' options please confirm which device ID you have?

JJB: go to mouse properties > device settings tab > settings... (that open the Properties for Synaptics ClickPad V7.4) > go to TouchPad Disable Zone > there is a bar called Minimum Touch Time and adjust it there.

For it to work you have to rest your finger for x seconds on top of the LED (on the top left corner of the touchpad) until a small screen appears and you get a little sound acknowledging the action. That works for both enable and disable.

Thanks but as I said above I do not have that option anywere in any of the 3 drivers that loaded with the 15.0.9 install. Only one of the 3 offers any choices for the 'Tap to Disable' feature, see screen shot below. This settings panel is the one that loads by default for me, and for some reason it does not include any settings for 'Tap Zones' only 'Tap to drag'. Does the panel your seeing have the 'disable' settings as well as the 'Tap Zones' ??

Also could you please compare your driver options with the second screen shot below? That is the list I get from a 'clean' synaptics install. I get all 4 synaptics options you can see below with the default install.

To check: Device mng > mice > synaptics > properties > driver tab > update driver > browse computer > let me pick from list .

I just noticed what the problem seems to be here...as I had to restore my laptop after the GPU failed...the touchpad drivers were also whipped out...hmmm

Tomorrow I'll redownload the 15.0.9 and report back. Sorry for the confusion JJB.

No idea why it should behave that way. I also have 15.0.9.0 drivers and synaptics 7.4 installed and here is my option window.

OK now at least I know it's not my computer that has a mind of it's own, lol.

After 6+ renditions of driver variations on the 15.0.9 I am back to where I started.

So what it boils down to is with this driver you cannot have the tap to disable feature (you can disable but not re-enable by tapping) and if you want 'Tap zones' you need to update the driver to a different version than what is installed by default (it is included with the install just not loaded).

I'm keeping it becuase the improved 2 finger scrolling outweighs the hassle of not being able to turn off the touchpad IMO. Plus I bet this will be fixed with yet another update soon :p

^ I have 15.0.9 and two finger scrolling is working flawlessly and after scroll starts I can lift one of my fingers and it would work. I think there is some other problem with your driver/synaptics software.

Well all I can figure is either it is a gen1 difference or maybe you need to confirm if you still have the 15.0.9 driver in place, as Serg determined he lost it when he recovered from a GPU update crash... I have never seen the 'timing' settings in any recent synaptics drivers.

It is odd that they would remove that option on a newer driver. I have even uninstalled all synaptics (drivers, folders, files) down to the MS generic driver and reinstalled a fresh download of 15.0.9 with the same results as the screen shots I posted above.

Its very odd that running same drivers/softwares we are getting different options. Really strange.

Just to add I have Win7 Ultimate; although I don't think it makes a difference.

As I suggested earlier, it must be a gen 1 difference, if I recall the device ID for the gen1 touchpad is SYN1E18 and on my gen2 it is SYN1E24. Maybe the software has different options that it installs based on what hardware it senses, like on the GPU's.

BTW; I said 'improved' 2 finger scrolling, not 'improper' :) That is the main reason I'm sticking with this version, the 2 finger scroll starts properly almost every time, much improved IMO.

I find it shocking that you actually have that turned on, to be honest I actually forgot that it was even there. Are you aware that it is completely useless? Especially if your doing photo editing, it would cause the brightness to keep changing so you would have no reference level for printing or calibration.

Also it really won't save any power, the difference in full brightness to minimum brightness is just 2 Watts. I would just disable it in the advanced power settings or your startup files (file name is 'alsmon' or somthing close to that).

I'm surprised that everyone is having so many issues with the Touchpad and the drivers. I kept the default drivers for the Gen2 because simply it works as stated albeit the 2-finger scroll is not the best. The newer drivers are not specified for the Envy so its pretty much use at your own risk.

Actually it is qualified for both the device id's the envy 15 uses so it is the correct 'new' driver for our touchpads it just hasn't been updated by HP yet. The same happened for the last few updates. That being said there are some issues as you've read but the 2 finger scrolling is much better....

There couldn't be any other reason than gen difference.

Apologies for misinterpretation, for me I feel this driver gives the best user experience so far (only MBP betters it).

Fair enough. I wish they had more multitouch like 2 finger tap or 3 finger tap of course the Mac version doesn't work that great either. I have not tried the Scrybe drivers yet but I may venture to do so.

How's the Zoom and Rotate on the new drivers? Are they any smoother? I find that the Rotate is a bit touchy on the original Gen2 drivers.

Not sure were you got that driver version # from but it is an older version than what is available on the opening page of this thead:

IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver: 6.10.6263.0 (from page 1)

And isn't talking about issues and instillation problems with the new drivers appropriate on this thread ?? I thouhgt that is what it's for. If not maybe we should start a new one about issues /problems etc..

I see. Might be a vendor-specific driver then.

Well the issues and problems aren't always kept on a driver level. But you maybe like bloated threads like the "owners thread"? I wouldn't like a 1000 pages driver-thread, but that might be just me.

I posted this on different threads for more people can help me, thanks~!

Hi, I've been reading this forum for like a month and I just joined to post questions, I have some problems with my Envy 15 and I hope some can help me with it.

I just got my Envy last Thursday (Mar 19, 2010), my specs are:
    i7 Q720 1.6 Ghz
    ATI 5830 1GB
    4GB memory
    500GB HDD
    1920*1080 glossy screen
    Bios: F.18
All dirvers are up-to-date. (CCC 10.3 installed)

    Basically I have following problems:

    1. Apperance: I noticed there is a lump/bulge on the right hand side of my keyboard, looks like something is sticking out from inside; and my battery lock is really loose, making noise when i move the laptop around. Anyone have or heard similar problems?

    2. System: it is wired that if I try to boot up my envy with an external USB hard-drive plugged in, the system will not boot up, it will start but the screen just turns black and not even enter the very first HP bios page. I guess that is the bios problem?

    3. Gaming performance, after reading lots of benchmarks and gaming reviews, I think my envy's gaming performance is worse than others' my graphic card is always on 500/800, never OC, and got only 8007 on 3dmark06 under default settings (1280*1024, SM2.0: 3088, HDR/SM3.0: 3386, cpu: 3021)
And i also ran some games test FPS with Fraps:

    BattleField Bad Company 2:
1920*1080 res, Medium settings(High Texture) 1xAA 4xAF,HBAO off, Single player, it was not smooth, I get FPS various between 25 to 45, drop below 20 when intense (like buildings explode) And the graphics lag too much, kind of buggy. That is not good Comparing to the review I read (which runs very smooth)

Dirt2: with all settings on Ultra/High (Except Post process on medium) No AA, I got average 22 FPS on benchmark test, comparing to the review I read, which got average 30 FPS on above settings.

    Modern Warfare 2:
1920*1080 res, all settings Ultra, all Yes. FPS from 45 to 70 when not intense, when intense it drops to around 30 or even 24 when very intense. There were times it drops to 22 FPS when I use right mouse button to zoom.

    Left4Dead 2:
1920*1080 res, Maxed out everything, (8xAA 16xAF, very high, high, high)
I got normally average 35 FPS, around 40 when not intense, drops below 30 with intese environment and fights, lowest once drops to 20 FPS, which is really bad I think, compared to the review saying "normally 60 to 70 FPS and lowest 50 when intense". How mine is much worse than his on this game??

    Crysis Warhead:
1920*1080 res, gamer on most and shadow, effects, particles, waters on mainstream, No AA, I got only 14 to 18 FPS, intense drop to 11 FPS.
1650*900 res, all on mainsream but textures on gamer, no AA i got average around 35, sometimes drops below 30

below is some reviews I used to compared with:

I know I asked a lot of questions, I really hope someone can help me and give some ideas about what's going on. Why there is such a big difference in performance between mine and others? I have no clue, above results I got is after the fresh reinstall and all up to date driver installed, bios F.18. I tried to run the games without Fraps, still the same performance.

I have about 8 days left to decide wether exchange a new one or return it, could somebody help me out here? Is it possible something wrong with my video card when they assemble it? I will be really appreciate with any idea and suggestion.
    Thanks!!

    1. No such problem with mine or the girlfriends, so sorry can't comment...
    2. Don't boot up with the external HD turned on then, as it may be trying to boot from that (which will do no good because there is no OS installed). Alternatively you can change the boot order setting in the BIOS to make sure it always boots from internal HD first.
    3. Your gaming performance is normal. 8000 3d Mark is on par for that card not overclocked. Reduce the resolution or graphics details in your games a little and you will see a big difference. The review you are comparing to had a faster processor than yours, and double the RAM... Left 4 Dead 2 is a CPU-intensive game, so that processor is making the difference. Your graphics card is fine.

1.) I have one very small bump in the finishing around the keyboard too. The previous one I returned had a small depression. Guess their quality control is not perfect. As for the sound when moving it, my first one had too loose black plastic parts in the 2 user accessible memory slots under the battery that moved, wasnt the battery tho.
2.) ive noticed that my notebook wont boot up with my hub (and its drives) attached either. and my boot order has internal first.

in terms of solutions i have to resort to pulling the usb hub out to startup when it does bug me.

My Envy, which is returned now also had a rather large lump under the right hand side of the keyboard. It was noticable from any viewing angle. As for the other questions, sorry can't help you, but i think the performance is on par with the rest of the non-oc'ed Envies around here.

I don't think. I believe JJB researched this and posted HP's actions are related to an upcoming windows update from microsoft that requires a new BIOS.
