Indeed, at this point, seems better to wait for the official release of those drivers for full compatibility. I had problems too, therefore I'm just waiting for the official launch from AMD to install them.

On a side note, did anyone notice how the latest F19 BIOS does not have the fun blowing stupidly fast when booted the laptop? Now it is quite all the time... :)

Agree. Would rather wait for the offical version, especially with all of the bugs and issue I see people are having.

I actually experienced the opposite. My laptop came with F18. Used for 48 hours or so be put in F19. The minute I upgrade, the next reboot, I start to notice the fan on the laptop blowing. It seems to be on more often than F18. So after using it for 2 days, I went back to F18.

It sounds like maybe you had the 'fans always on' disabled in the f18 BIOS. When you flash a new BIOS it resets to default which is 'fans always on' enabled. F19 is quieter (lower RPM) for me and as Serg stated it does not rev up as much on startup.

Strange thing smilepak. I noticed the laptop runs the fans more time but quieter and it doesnt sound like a taking-off plane when hitting the on button.

Was the cooling plan under active or passive under power management?

I might give F19 another try this weekend then. Since both of the HP Envy deity vouch for it..lol...

Just wanted to thank all of you for the invaluable information in this thread. Your advice saved me a lot of time and frustration! My son has the 1st gen i7 Envy 15. The 18a bios and latest video drivers solved ALL our issues (low frame rates, overheating, random BSOD, etc.). Thanks again!!

FYI... F19 did not work for me either. System ran very hot and the fans behaved erratically. Flashed F18 back and system runs very stable and cool. Others have reported issues with F19 as well, so we are not alone. It probably depends on the hardware configuration.

i cant access bios in either F19 F18 or F17 for some reason... if I press F10 during boot i only get a black screen, then i have to press down the power key and reboot the computer.

On the Envy you hit the escape key during boot to get to BIOS.

Im not sure since yours is an i7 and smilepak's is an i5 version, therefore hardware-wise are very different.

Are you sure you installed it properly and nothing interfered when doing so? Once installed, check you options as what cooling policy is, and under the BIOS how the fan is set to run.

What do you mean by erratically exactly?

Today at some point the new 10.3 drivers should be officially launched as the proper download. Keep an eye on announcements on this matter.

That's what I was referring to. Maybe it is "stable" in i5 configs, but not as much in i7 configs, etc...

Fans going ON (to max power - like an airplane taking off) and OFF continuously, or like every minute or so, even after a clean boot, idle machine. Not doing anything. Very hot machine.

I also had display issues with F19 connecting external displays via HDMI. The laptop screen basically "dies", requiring disconnecting the external monitor and a reboot.

Okay, giving F19A another try. In the process of flashing. Will muck with it for a few days and see.

Wierd how you matter ify ou flash F18 or F19, during the EC mode, it max the fan speed and sound like 747 ahahah

By the way, if i set "Fan Always On" to disable in BIOS, that does not mean the fan will NEVER turn on right? It will turn on when needed?

It will turn on as needed based on the temp sensor readings onthe GPU and CPU, they will cycle on and off independantly. My CPU seems to kick in at about 42C and GPU at about 50C.

I just wish there was an easier way to switch between the 2 modes so I don't need to go into the BIOS evry time I want to maximize battery life....

FYI; Changed out my noisy CPU fan assembly on Sunday and so far so good, nice and quiet :D

With FAN OFF, temp average 41 - 45c on normal usage (i.e.: Surfing / listen to iTune)

With FAN ON, temp average 31-35c on the same usage. So i'll leave it on.

The link above only provides drivers for desktop ATI Radeon graphics cards.

However, AMD has updated their mobility drivers page:

    Windows Vista / Windows 7 x86:
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-32.aspx

    Windows Vista / Windows 7 x64:
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

Unfortunately, you need to run the verifier to determine whether you can get the new driver. I think the driver that was available since the preview is the same as the one that will be provided now. This means that the link will remain the same as on the original post; no changes have been made.

EDIT: I have updated the release notes link for this driver.

It is stable on my i7 machine. Make sure you install it properly. Better to leave it install alone and then check.

Strange that the display dies. That is a GPU driver thing. Which one are you running?

    Read below:
You got it before me...lol but yeah, that is the answer.

Note that the latest ATI drivers seem to have the same problems the previous set did.. 'they don't install on their own, even by removing existing ATI drivers and using Drivercleaner.. (on a 1st-gen HP Envy /w ATI 4830)

(yes this should be obvious if 'the link didn't change'.. just noting it for completeness)

Just comfired this also. No BIOS options listed on the Envy 15 HP drivers pages at all  will call tech support and see if they have a clue as to what this means.

EDIT: Spoke with HP Envy tech support. All BIOS options are gone from the website for now due to an upcoming critical Microsoft update that they are reviewing. Apparently it may require BIOS adjustments.... They should be back up with a new BIOS 'shortly' along with the MS updates.

Edit: Just noticed that the direct download links to the BIOS updates are still available. They will be left there; the first post will be updated with the new BIOS image when it is released.

Oops, I didn't think to try the direct link, I went in through the HP drivers update listings by model number.

FYI: They also mentioned that different BIOS versions for the i7 and i5 models may be coming due to the different cooling requirements , but not sure if this will be coming with the above mentioned revisions.

Guys is there any specific order to go about installing the drivers on a clean windows format?
I know first I need the chipset driver but then what by order? I only need the necessary drivers and nothing bloatware from HP's apps.

    Thanks.

WOW! Another BIOS already? I'm glad I got this laptop, HP does work to make it better... :)

Thanks JJB on the info. It was a matter of time for the BIOS to be differentiated, after all some have USB 3.0 and others 2.0, different CPUs, different requirements...

Okay this is from a Windows 7 Team Blog concerning SP1. Ive cut out the junk about Windows server and such and just left the SP1 info unless ppl really want it in which case I'll re-edit:

"Talking About Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
    Thursday, March 18, 2010, 7:58:03 AM | Brandon LeBlanc
Today during our online Desktop Virtualization Hour event, we’ll be talking a little bit about Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

For Windows 7, SP1 includes only minor updates, among which are previous updates that are already delivered through Windows Update. SP1 for Windows 7 will, however, deliver an updated Remote Desktop client that takes advantage of RemoteFX introduced in the server-side with SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2.

    ...

Windows 7 is ready for commercial deployments now and many industry experts have recommended that customers do not wait for SP1.

We’re not yet announcing a beta or release timeline for SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 today. Once SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is released, the service pack will be delivered through Windows Update and be available on Microsoft Download Center for download as well.

I’ll be posting more on SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 once we get close to a release milestone. And remember, our Desktop Virtualization Hour online event starts at 9am PST today. Tune in if you want to hear more about desktop virtualization!"

Nice suggestion, but no matter what I do, I cannot get back to a raw 'vga only' state.. even after running both driver cleaner and driver sweeper, if I reboot one final time, it installs an ATI driver matching one of the various HP updates...

    ===
Edit: Got it back to 'bare metal' vga by pointing driver cleaner to c:\swsetup.. rebooted.. boom raw VGA and no driver update. Installed binary package.. system bluescreen's on reboot.

I give up.. I don't think this is ready for everybody.. I'll wait for an HP update (if it ever comes)

    @bfaber

Sorry to here about your troubles. I am beginning to think either the 4830 has issues with the newer drivers (even though it is specifically listed as compatable in the release notes) or maybe it is the HP crapware as you hinted at in your post.

IF YOU HAVE A 4830 PLEASE REPLY :

Has anyone got the 4830 up and running sucessfully with any version of the 10.3 driver package??

If so do you have HP factory software or a clean Window 7 install ??

    Ok

Here's my setup in regards to 10.3:

    HP Envy 1050-CA (gen 1)
OS: Win7 x64 Ultimate OEM install
    HWare: Radeon HD mob. 4830
    BIOS: F19a

    Drivers results and install procedure:

1- From clean install, proceeded to put 10.3a in then rebooted. BSOD on several boots or straight machine restart without interaction on my part. All happened before i reached the win logon screen.

2 - Rolled back driver to 10.2 manually using device manager (in safe mode). Didnt change CCC, just roled back display driver. --- THIS IS STABLE. Gets me a 6.7 on the windows exp index after dx9.0c is installed.

3 - Tried installing 10.3 (release) without uninstalling and was told my driver was up to date. Didnt pursue this with full uninstall as I was reading bad comments coming in yesterday from you guys. Just left it at 10.2 waiting for something actually working to come in.

Bottom Line: NOT WORKING, Stick to 10.2 ...or tell me if you get it up and running.

Try tapping the esc key very fast during boot (like rapid fire shooting).

There is also a seperate ctrl + something way to get to RAID configuration BIOS settings. Look in the user manual. Maybe if you get to that option you can get to standard BIOS settings.

If you get to a menu from the escape key then I assume you know that you have to use the arrow keys and 'enter' to select options, the touchpad and / or mouse won't work.

I posted this in the other thread also: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=6063858#post6063858

I think i can shed some more information on this.
    I have a 1st Gen envy 1060ea (im from the uk) with a 4830

For 3 weeks i have been trying to get any drivers other than the HP supplied ones to actually work. EVERYTHING has been to no avail.

I have tried the 9.9's from the ati website, the 10.2's with the modder, the 10.3 preview, the 10.3a and the 10.3 official release. All have given exactly the same error.
BSOD/crash during installation and then BSOD every subsequent boot, just before the windows logon.

EDIT: I have been through 2 1st Gen envy 1060ea's before this, both with the same problem. This is now my 3rd and its doing the same thing.

I did some digging around, tried a fresh install of windows 7 ultimate 64bit, tried various BIOS' and it seems that the problem isn't related to any of those.

I discovered something that i don't know how relevant or interesting it may be.
I snooped around the .inf's of the HP driver and the ati 10.3 driver and discovered the following:
The HP .inf has the following cards listed as compatible:
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94A0&SUBSYS_1522103C
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 Series" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94A0&SUBSYS_7009103C
    "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 Series" = ati2mtag_Manhattan, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68A1&SUBSYS_1522103C

In the ATI driver .inf there is nothing after dev_94a0 for the 4830's

Secondly, the BSOD's i have been getting have continuously referenced atipmdag.sys as the cause. Upon further snooping i have found that the HP installation does NOT install the atipmdag.sys file and also makes NO reference to it in its own .inf.
The ATI drivers seem to require this file to function.

I have no idea what atipmdag.sys does but it has a very similarly named from atikmdag.sys which is also installed with atipmdag.sys in the ATI driver.
ONLY atikmdag.sys is installed from the HP driver (amongst all the other driver files)

At first i thought it was a driver signature thing but the 10.3's are properly signed and the problem persists.

    Any thoughts?

After clean fresh windows install i think i still need the turbo boost driver. I cant see it installed under services in the control panel. It was listed before i did format. Where can I get it? because i know its not there for sure

EDIT: Can I find it in the swsetup folder?

You can get it from HP's website or Intel's Website.

FYI, in the future when quoting very long quotes you can delete all but the pertitnent info so we don't fill up thread with multiple pages of the same post. Or simply use '@JohnnDoe' at the beginning of a post.

I appreciate your response, however, I looked at HP website and I couldnt find it. I found the Turbo boost widget only on intel's website but not the driver. I will have to look at the swsetup folder.

I know it's in SWsetup and am pretty sure it's the one I listed above.

How do you check the actual chipset driver version to see if you have the most current version as listed on the 1st page ??

In device manager I only see MS driver version 6.1.7600.16385 for the CPU and controllers and a processor DRAM controller driver version of 9.1.1.1013 which is the only thing close to the version numbers listed on the O.P.

I am running the chipset driver from the SWsetup folder after my fresh install and the above posts got me wondering if we have the most current chipset drivers......

PS I tried running the installer again but it gives no details as to version up to the point of the actually install, which I canceled....

    Im running the same 9.1.1.1013

Go to Desktop > Right click My Computer > Properties > Device Manager > Open System Devices > Search for Intel PM55 Express Chipset LPC Interface Controller - 3B03 > Double click > driver tab.

According to the Updater it is up to date. Hope this helps JJB.
