Windows 8 and 8.1 work on this laptop (17T 3200)
BUT there are issues. The main issue is the wifi button. There is a driver for it but I have to keep re-installing it often after re-boots.
The bluetooth drivers in 8 and 8.1 doesnt work. Never did get it to work right no matter what driver I used.
The other drivers are tricky. You have to uninstall several if you want to upgrade to 8 or 8.1 then re-install specific drivers.
Due to the fact that 8 and 8.1 suck so bad and the wifi button and bluetooth is not so functional, I use win7.
I have used many different kinds of msata and SSD drives. The fastest ram you will get to work with this is the CORSAIR Vengeance Performance series.
I used CMSX8GX3M2B1600C9 It bumped up all the windows index scores just from its low latency of 9-9-9-24. It does have a real world affect on anything you do with this laptop. Plus the voltage rating is just 1.35v which is lower than the usual 1.5v. It saves battery life. Bad thing is the price of around 85$
At this moment I am using Adata ram series AM1U16BC2P1 with a rather high latency of 11-11-11-28 and a rating of 1.5v. This is the same ratings at the OEM ram the laptop came with. Its Just 4gb. I use this laptop for video editing and have never used more than 3.5gb of the ram. It did come with 16gb.I sold it and bought this ran for about $30. I made a profit of about 150$.
I then sold the Hybrid solid state/ hard disk drive it came with and used several different types in its place.I recommend the Mushkin Enhanced MKNSSDAT240GB if you have the extra $$. Its one of the top 2 drives for this laptop. For an even better performance of just a few more bytes per second and lower $$ price try the Kingston SMS200S3/120G. It is also lower in amperage at just .35 compared to .8 amps with the Mushkin and other brands. At this time I am using an Adata SP900 120gb SSD which is really fat. I got it for about $45.
I have never run out of space on a 120gb drive. I do however use a second Hard drive. The Travelstar 5K1500. Its slow but I use for all my backups.
I use the Ineo I-NA217U Plus on the USB ports.
For gaming I have found a method to boost the video card and video memory found here on youtube. It works but you will need to watch the overclock as it will cause a blue screen and freeze up everything if you go past the limits of your laptop. I dont think overclocking is necessary. This laptop has high end graphics that even by this days standards are still in the $1000 range. The 7850M out does the Nvidia gt750m which many highend laptops are selling with today. This laptop will be good for a few more years. Be sure to get a very good laptop cooler. I had to upgrade the 2 fans in my laptop cooler to 10, 000 rpm fans to keep it cool. Its still almost silent. It doesnt shut down now when playing games.
For music I prefer to use the HP US Wireless Audio Kit Extender QF299AA which can be found for 55$. It bypasses the internal sound card and send the sounds to a outboard DAC with 5.1 channel DTS surround sound capabilities. It has digital coax and miniToslink outputs to connect to a high end AVR so you can get the purest sound. The quality is DVD standard. Wa better than using the headphone output on the laptop. Trust me on this one. Even the 2 RCA outputs on the external DAC sounds way better. Plus since its a wireless DAC you can be 30 feet away from your stereo and still have clear music. This laptop comes with KleerNet Audio already installed which is located next to the wifi chipset. Its the best Audio option for this laptop. It also does come with a USB device if you want to use the DAC with another computer. Its and outstanding product which few know about.
Overall this laptop is a very good performer. I have played several high end games while using my laptop cooler I modified to blow allot of cool air into it while playing and I must say that I cant find a better laptop for anything under $1500.
I can see this laptop lasting years. Even today the specs are very good. Just keep up with the newest drivers and always clean your laptop with care. -

Please bear with me. I'm not very tech savvy but am great at following directions to solve problems.
I received a used HP Envy 17t-3000 CTO laptop with 750 GB...i7 - 2670 QM...6GB...64 Bit. with no restore on it to get back to original config..
I received it updated to Windows 8.1 Pro which didn't allow video drivers to work (Intel HDGraphics 3000 and AMD 7690M XT switchable graphics).
I installed Windows 7 Home Premium back on it (originally on it when made) from an ISO download on line.
My problem is that I need to know exactly what drivers in which order to download on top of Win 7 install to get switchable graphics display to work as it's still not working with 8.1 Pro removed. I now have a black screen and only see the screen with HDMI connected to the tv.
I need to be sure I am downloading all the needed drivers for it to work properly ASAP as I have a time limit to return it if that isn't the problem / isn't fixable / is a hardware problem.
I really want to keep it if it is fixable with correct driver installations and I don't have time to order restore disc from HP before my return window is closed.
So, can someone please help me and list the drivers in order of installation for my laptop?
Thanks!
PS: When I reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium from my burned ISO file does that remove all the drivers I tried to install before that aren't working? If not...how do I do that? I want to start over beginning with the Win 7 install followed by the correct drivers. -
I've wasted a lot of time on this issue, video not working properly on Windows 8 and only under certain conditions working on Win 7.
It's been a while but this is what I learned:
-Use BIOS F06!!!!! (with the newer versions I never got it to work correctly, there is no harm in using this older version as far as I know)
-Install SP55587 Video 7690M XT for video.
That should fix it.
All other combinations with newer BIOS and drivers all ended up being a disappointment, with 'something' not working, black screens, not switching and in Windows 8 the famous brightness being stuck at 100% (so instead of the 3D glass I needed sunglasses!
btw, when you do a clean install from an ISO file all should be clean and fresh.
hope this helps! -

I had used my Advanced Driver Updater last night to download drivers. That brought me a screen but it was low quality and stretched. In Device Manager it had 2 display adapters showing but both has yellow ! next to them. I then used Windows Updater and it downloaded Advanced Micro Devices Inc - Intel HD Graphics Family as Successful (8.882.2.4000)....but the attempt by them to then install Radeon HD 7690M XT "Failed". So then I had only 1 display adapter showing in Device Manager (Intel HD) but the yellow warning ! was gone. No AMD listed and no switchable graphics any more. Picture was wonderful except there was some strange blotchy stuff happening in the background of my wallpaper picture. So after reading your suggestion I checked my BIOS...that was still F.06 from when I did that days ago. Then tried to install 55587 and screen kept flashing and shut laptop down (restarted) and it is black again unless I use an HDMI to the TV. I'm now continuing to try the 55587 install as it was showing still in progress...not complete. It appears stuck at the same spot but I'm waiting to see if it ever completes and it the screen will return if it does.
If not what do you suggest? Can I go to restore back to when there was a picture before I tried to download 55587 tonight? Should I have tried to download 54916 (original Intel HD 3000) instead of 55587 (HD 4000) for my Envy or is upgrading to 4000 OK.? -
Hi Rachelle33, I see you asked your question elsewhere as well, this is not helpful, multiple people trying to help you in multiple places.
If you have a question just ask it ONCE in the appropriate thread.
I'm signing off on this discussion. -
I don't know which is the appropriate thread and am desperate for an answer quickly as I don't have long to return it if necessary. I only asked 2 places and still haven't gotten it resolved yet. I've tried reading thru all the pages in both the Envy 17 30XX thread and the Driver download thread for my HP 17t-3000 and I'm going cross eyed trying to speed read thru then all for an answer. I realize there isn't much traffic in the Envy 17 2nd generation threads now....and time is my enemy!
I had only Intel HD in my Device Manager with Radeon HD missing but had a great picture so I decided to forget about switchable graphics and watch a movie. Ten minutes later the screen went black again with Radeon appearing back in my Device Manager. I had exited the SP 55587 (8.882.2.4000) download since it was hung up for over an hour not budging in the "Analyze" stage for Catalyst...but it must have downloaded the driver to use Radeon so it appeared later in Device Manager. It says both Intel HD and Radeon HD are working properly but black screen without HDMI to TV is back now that Radeon is back.
I think I vaguely remember some setting to adjust to allow switchable graphics to work properly together....but I can't find where I read it! If not is there a way to just have Intel HD since I don't really need switchable...just a stable screen / picture to depend on! Too bad I really want this machine to work or I'd have given up long ago. -

Hello there, everyone. I'm experiencing quite a few problems with my HP Envy 17 3D 3000, and I was hoping that you could help me work through them.
I just recently received this computer as a hand-me-down from a friend, and I immediately installed an SSD in it and fresh installed Windows 8. I then upgraded to Windows 8.1, which, from what I can glean, was NOT a good decision. While my AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT seems to be working fine (it appears in the Device Manager as AMD Radeon HD 6770M... should I be worried about that?) my Intel HD Graphics do not show up at all. I do have two "unknown devices", but I can't install driver software for either one. I don't have any problems adjusting the brightness of the screen, however.
From what I've learned from reading this thread, it seems that Windows 8.1 is the cause of all this; the OS does not support the drivers. Does this mean that I have to downgrade to either Windows 8 or Windows 7? I'm frankly rather tired of repeatedly installing and uninstalling unsupported drivers over and over.
Thank you in advance for your help, and if you need any more information, please do not hesitate to ask. -
Reaper71.
I do have a solution for you.... but I really really need to get a hold of your DSDT from the BIOS because I want that "Intel" lock out fix.
The solution to your issue is to downgrade the BIOS.
Let me know if you can help me out. I recall seeing info somewhere on the BIOS that didn't gimp Intel. -
-
It is safe.
DSDT - OSx86
So that you understand what it is.
Essentially I want what you don't want! : )
I want to try and find out how to implement the Intel lock out fix onto my Envy 17 2xxx 3D.
Reason being that the newest AMD drivers only allow dynamic switching hence not allowing me to watch any 3D movies on them.
I figured that if I manage to turn off the Intel I will also be able to use AMD in standalone mode. On dynamic switching the Intel driver is primary and does not allow for 3D.
Your laptop switches off Intel on Windows 8 when the BIOS detects Windows 8. (via DSDT)
If it detects Windows 7 it will work.
You can downgrade this BIOS or mod it so that it doesn't check if you have Windows 8. OR mod the DSDT!!!!!
Here another Envy 17 3xxx user with the same issue: It is possible to fake the Windows version reported to BIOS ?
What I want to do is copy the functionality of your BIOS.
RWEverything | Read & Write Everything
ACPI table:
save all -
And how would I go about downgrading the BIOS? Do I just track down an earlier version and install it over the newer version? Or is it more complicated than that? -
I cannot pm you since you do not have enough posts. funky . mike @g-m-a-i-l.com . Without the spaces and minuses.
All you need to do is to flash an earlier BIOS. Ensure that you also have the current BIOS available and downloaded incase you need to upgrade again.
However during the process of downgrading the InsydeFlash tool might tell you that the current BIOS is already up to date, restricting you from downgrading.
In that case:
open the folder where InsydeFlash extracted
open platform.ini
navigate to:
[Bios_Version_Check]
and set to: 1 -

Fairly straight forward:
on the HP driver support page it has previous versions -
Hi, I have 17t-3200 with AMD7850. I currently have the HP driver sp58812 installed (2012 version) with registry fix applied on Windows 8.1. My dimming/brightness button still isn't working and has been like this for about 1 year and half or so with having an external IPS monitor as a work around. I was kind of hoping HP has released a new version driver now to fix this and found out it is still the same driver on the HP website.
I have tried going to device manager and applying Microsoft adapter driver to the Intel 4000 and my brightness/dimming button finally worked but then at the price of losing switching graphics capability. I've installed/reinstalled various drivers (including trying Win7 HP drivers) for 2 weeks now and is very frustrating. As much as possible I don't want to do a fresh re-install or roll back to Win 7 as I don't want to reinstall presets, plug-ins and software I already have set-up on this laptop.
Can anyone please help me or direct me to a driver that would fix this? -
Anyone tried to install Windows 10? Will it be possible/good?
I tried Windows 8 before, but reinstalled Windows 7. One of the many reasons: fan and cooling control was totally broken and my laptop kept overheating.
ps. I currently run Windows 7 on HP Envy 17-3095ca -
Tried Win10 beta, seems to work fine, but did run into this issue with screen brightness. All else looked good, I will try again once Win10 is released...

The thing about the brightness is fairly simple. I have experience with your problem, where the brightness wont work and also the video will not switch from amd to intel video. The simple fix is to remove all video drivers and start over. Use the amd tool to remove any left overs. Then, Install the very first driver that the laptop came with. I cant provide a link because my model may not be the same as your model. The reason to first install the factory video drive is to get the video working as it was from factory with all factory capabilities, namely the brightness and the video switching. Then, the next thing you must do is install the latest amd driver but do NOT fully install the entire program. AMD catalyst will give you the option to install everything or just some parts of the software. Choose JUST THE DRIVER. This will leave the factory AMD software as it is but updrade the drivers! This will enhance the performance but not cause errors. Then upgrade your Intel Video drivers using Intels upgrade utility found on its drivers website. It will find the latest driver for your laptop and install it. If the intel upgrade utility cant find a driver then you have done something wrong during the factory driver install. I found that if installing drivers other than the factory drivers FIRST, then trying to upgrade will have problems. After you have upgraded everything, install the provided brightness registry hack on the first page and it does work everytime! but remember to always reboot after every install.
Ive had this 17T 3200 for 2.5 years or more now and it still is very fast and reliable. I cant see myself upgrading for a long time. The biggest upgrade I would recommend to everyone is to get a SATA hard drive! The other upgrade I did was to replace the factory ram with performance ram with better timings. The ram wasnt such a big performance but the SATA was a huge difference. If you get a sata goahead and get the Msata. Take advantage of that Msata slot and use the other 2 hard drive bays for extra large storage drives.
After these 2 simple upgrades and then upgrading the video drivers, the windows index went way up and doing benchmarks increased by a huge amount! -
Well, now, All this talk of Windows 10 made me try it. Thank the good lord, that I didnt actually pay for it cause it sucks! Lets see, the forcing onto me to download updates and no way of stoppng it. The drivers that it installs that dont work right. The ugly mono toned colors of blue and black it uses with the blocky theme. The odd way it tried to mesh the start menu with the apps menu that win 8 had. I could go on and on but I wont. Ill just highly highly suggest to start looking for Ubuntu laptops or maybe Apple. For me? Ill be looking into Ubuntu. Im done with Windows. This laptop will stay with Win7 till it falls apart. Then Ill find a good Ubuntu rig...
My 2 cents...
Here is a great vid showing you just how stupid Windows 10 is... Dont install it.

Hi every one,
I have a hp envy 15t-3200 (HP ENVY 15-3200) and recently install window 10 update for free.
Of course i get brightness issue, which is a big problem for me, as I can't change brightness using buttons and from control panel.
As you may know there are a FIX for this problem in window 7 and 8, you can look for it Googling "Fix Brightness Control for Windows 8 AMD SG Drivers", but it doesn't work for windows 10.
So I make some changes and here is the reg file for fix this problem (just start it and click confirm):
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0By8Arc_O6Q8waVR3S0lpbkVUejQ/view?usp=sharing
Or you can do it manually:
Press win + R
enter regedit
press ctrl + F
enter FeatureTestControl
And in two directories, showing below, find parameter "FeatureTestControl" and change his value to "0000ffff"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelkmd
Make sure you making changes in "4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318"
Reboot afterwards!
And you'll have it!yakherder likes this. -

anyone had fn+f12 toggle on/off airplane mode (wi-fi) working? mine did not work under windows 10 pro.

I know this is an old laptop, but is anyone running windows 10 experiencing or have experienced ATI HD 7700m driver issues. My 15t-3200 cto is crashing with all newer than 15.7 catalyst drivers. Windows 10 wants to install newer drivers before it will update now. I have managed in the past by disabling the ATI card in device manager, but creators update will not install because it automatically enables and updates the ATI card. Updating the drivers indefinitely hangs the laptop. Anyone deal with this or have ideas?

reboot
uninstall all Bluetooth stuff in device manager
install the old version of Broadcom 20702

Just an update on this old beast...
Still running full force years later, but none of the windows updates were instaling past 33% or 42%
the solution:
Display Driver uinstaller
Remove AMD and Intel , every last trace, multiple time, disconnecting from internet so they dont get downloaded again
installing newest windows update via ISO image 1803 at the time
all went through perfectly
now you have aproblem as soon as windows installs AMD drivers, computer freezes,
log in to safemode, device manager, disable AMD device , reboot
then install the HP AMD drivers from 2012 , listed on the 1st page here
then update intel drivers
restart and you can now install the latest AMD autodownload drivers 18.5.1 at the moment ,
then run the brightness adjustment registery fix on the first page and restart.
you now have the latest windows and latest AMD and intel drivers all working fine.yakherder likes this. -

Followed your steps and was finally successful with the update.
However, after the driver uninstalls and the update went through my laptop did'nt freeze. Don't know why. I still went ahead with the relevant AMD update from page 1 i.e. sp 56896 and the intel driver update. My device manger shows me 2 display adapters i.e. Intel HD4000 and the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No sign of the AMD. Under other devices, the manager shows me unknown device with no drivers (is this the graphics card ?). Was hoping the catalyst 18.5.1 would be the magic fix, but the install process hangs my laptop.
Would be grateful for a fix or any ideas.
EDIT : finally got it working after more than half a day. lol. following the exact sequence detailed is vital. also i had downloaded the initial windows 7 driver cos that what my laptop came with but the windows 8 drivers is what worked for me. Thanks all. lol. Btw brightness fix is not working.
RE-EDIT: for windows 10, brightness fix on page 1 does'nt work. crackjack's easy solution on page 39 worked for me.
Thank you guys for taking the time out. My system is almost back to how it was when it was new. No thanks to windows 10.Last edited: Sep 30, 2018 -
Since everything is going so well. Maybe I can hope for some more. lol.
I run an external display in portait mode, which works fine with my other laptop (dell 13) but with the envy the option for orientation is grayed out and stuck in landscape mode. Anyone have any ideas ?
