Well, I re-installed RST by using the installer (iata_cd), no problems. Rapid Storage UI updated to 9.6.4.1002 as well. Hope you get your system restored.

Yes, system restored.
Though i have a PM945 laptop (ICH7), maybe that is the problem for this fail
-
I can tell you that there is something very wrong with the Broadcom Bluetooth installer package that Z3tor provided (not Rapid Storage Technology -- haven't tried that yet). I tried using the wizard to update the driver on Windows 7 x64, and it started uninstalling everything that I had while it was supposedly removing the older Bluetooth driver components!
It was basically deleting all of my files on the hard drive, and I could tell by my disappearing desktop icons and missing personal files!
I had restored from a backup stored on the home server that I made about a week and a half ago -- this is a serious issue which is enough to not post this immediately since it is very likely that others will run into the same predicament using the typical installation procedure (meaning, not through the Device Manager). With the exception of the Agere modem driver and this Bluetooth module driver, all other updates by Z3tor will be put up once I'm able to get my laptop back in full working order.
Thanks again Z3tor, and remember -- it's not your fault.
-
Wow ! Nice finding.
My mind won't even think about it!
So, the bluetooth did the bad in my laptop.
Because i did installed the RTS and then before reboot i tried the bluetooth.
And what happened to you happened to me also!
So, finally we found the suspect!
Try also the RTS with installer and tell me if it will prompt you with the option that it did or not installed successfully at the end
This blue-tooth installer might not be just a bug, but looks to me like a virus behavior! -
Damn, that's bloody weird behaviour
I updated the bluetooth driver via device manager, did not touch the installer. I can tell that my bluetooth works properly. In fact, data transfer speed seems to have improved a bit.
Now that I recall, this file deleting issue hapenned to me too. That was when I first started to use my bluetooth device about seven months ago. Bluetooth was not enabled by default when i got my laptop, so I enbled it and it was not working at all. There was something wrong with the driver. So I downloaded latest driver from HP support for my model and started to install it. That's when weird things started to happen... Shortcuts started to dissapear from the desktop, and the whole system was frozen. I rebooted, but Windows did not start. Then I tried to restore to previous restore points, but all attempts failed. I had to do a full system recovery to factory settings. -
thats why we have justin watching our backs.
thanks again, buddy! -
also, i needed to ask.
what exactly do the new wifi drivers fix? any noticeable change/ improvement? -
yea, that sound like a virus, since there appears to be intelligence to take out selected programs and even stop system restore.... hate to jump to conclusions.. but it appears to reside in the installer......Of course I could be wrong.. what do I know?
Just to be clear... which bluetooth drivers site was that?... without reposting the link.. "Direct link for Broadcom Bluetooth v6.3.0.4700" was that the one from samsung or did that come from somewhere else?
If so, thats a bit scary since thats a reputable site.
But for now, would be good for everyone to do away with all links to that driver download till we get this figured out. -
Do we have the latest Realtek PCIe ethernet drivers?
One the first page I see version 7.021
But on HP's site I see version 7.7
direct download link.. -
That driver (7.7.1002.2009 A) is dated 2009/12/11, latest is 2010/6/22.

Here's interesting reading. Looks like someone else have had same troubles with Broadcom bluetooth.
The Invisible Blog: DO NOT install Broadcom's bluetooth driver software update to Windows 7
edit: Here's another one...
Bluetooth, Broadcom, and Window 7 64-bit - microsoft-news.windows-networking-wireless
I don't think it's a virus. Broadcom have just made a crappy (64-bit?) installer wich apparently destroys some data...
-
I also had to do a complete system recovery from one of my backups after attempting to install the bluetooth driver which rendered my system unbootable. I use Acronis TIH for my backups. It only took about 15 minutes to recover my OS drive using a backup made two days before, so not a big deal.
-
A good reality check for us all.. while I like to stay current with the latest drivers.. But I don't like the headaches and hassles of being a beta tester, and I certainly don't like stumbling upon trash that some trickster has tossed into the wild.
Another excellent reason Justin really tries to prove these drivers before posting them.
The best proof is to make sure the site from which they are being downloaded is a legitimate site.
Just because it has the word "samsung", or "HP" does not make it legit.
This thread has been great to watch each others backs.
Thanks to everyone who has reported the good, bad, and the ugly so we all get the benefit. -
I didn't notice it on this thread, or HP's site..... which site did you get the latest from?
-
It's on the first page...
Download link takes you to Realtek site.
-
New Realtek NIC Driver is available for Win7 (Version 7.023): Realtek
-
Got a direct link? Can't download it. Or maybe they pulled it, because it makes your computer like explode or something...
Edit
download works now...
Edit
Installed just fine
-
So are the realtek numbers just wacked out?
that download link shows version 7.023...dated 7-7-2010.... I already have version 7.7 even though its dated 12-11-09?
that link also does not lead to a driver download..At least the auto install link.... only codecs and manuals.
The Win7 drivers link works but it doesn't say whether its for 64bit or not. -
Hey Axel!!
It's been a while, but I just had to do a clean install of W7 and the latest IDT drivers don't adjust the bass and treble and also doesn't have the OSD as I used to have. Any ideas?
Thanks bud!
-
axel posted these some time back and I have reposted them several times.
How to get the OSD back for the Volume and Bass/Treble!!! This also turns on the functionality of the Bass/Treble Sliders as they were disabled during one of HP's Updates. Thanks to Axel Foley for all the help!!
Note.. stuff in red is my addin.- Go into Control Panel and uninstall HP MEDIASMART SmartMenu
- Also, in Control Panel uninstall HP Quick Launch Buttons.
- Go to C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard and delete HP MediaSmart Folder ~~NOTE: These folders may have been deleted during the Uninstall Process.~~
- Go to C:\Prgram Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard and delete HP Quick Launch Buttons Folder ~~NOTE: The Program Files (x86) is for 64 bit users. You may need to find the HP Quick Launch Buttons Folder in a different location~~
- Reboot Computer.
- If you have “HP Tone Control Utility v2.00 A 2009-09-28” installed, uninstall that too.
- Reboot Computer.
- Download HP MEDIA SMART MENU Version 2.10. Here is the direct link.
- ~DV8 Users Skip This Step!! Download BIOS Version F.31. Here is the direct link.
- Download HP Quick Launch Button Version 6.50.8.1. Here is the direct link.
- ~DV8 Users Skip This Step!! ~Install Bios Version F.31.~~NOTE: Computer should reboot on its own.~~
- Install HP Quick Launch Buttons Version 6.50.16.1 link is here.
- Reboot Computer.
- Install HP MEDIA SMART MENU Version 2.10
- Reboot Computer.
- All Done - Sliders should now work.
-
Yeah, I actually posted that over on my other site (hphdx.net) thanks to Axel's help. I totally forgot about it.
But I think it must be the MediaSmart Smartmenu that I didn't install. That must be why the OSD doesn't appear.
I think with the latest IDT driver and the Smartmenu it should work, IIRC.
Thanks tough man! ++
-
The Realtek numbers are actually right -- it's just that you are comparing the WinDDK version number with the Realtek version number. The differences between the two are the padding of zeros.
So basically, without padding: 7.23 vs. 7.7; with padding (which I also use as does Realtek): 7.023 vs. 7.007.
I'll update the first post with this new version (along with the other updates). -
07/04/2010
- Updated Intel WiFi Link driver to version 13.2.1.5 (thanks Command-HDX).
07/06/2010
- Added Windows 7 x64 download link for Intel WiFi Link driver version 13.2.1.5.
07/07/2010
- Updated Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Family Controller driver to version 7.023 for Windows 7.
- Updated Intel Rapid Storage Technology (SATA AHCI) to version 9.6.4.1002 (thanks Z3tor).
- Added MediaSmart Live TV version 3.1.3003 (3.1 C2).
-
Thanks for shedding some light on this
Btw Nvidia version numbering never made much sense to me...
-
Installed the SmartMenu and IDT Drivers (latest) and got the Volume Slider back on the screen. But no Bass and Treble.
I might try the previous version of the SmartMenu. -
Nevermind the above post. I forgot one of our Mods made a great adjustment and uploaded the HP Tone Control for us.
Feel free to check it out.
HP Tone Control modified icons. Take a look! - Upgrades & Mods - HPHDX.net -
Haven't been on here in a while man, but have you considered adding the HP Tone Controls for the HDX line? The latest drivers for IDT and Smartmenu only give you on-screen display for the Volume, where the Tone Controls give you the ability to adjust the Bass/Treble with the slider as well as having it be displayed on the screen.
As far as I can tell, without the HP Tone Controls installed you are not able to adjust the Bass/Treble using the Sliders. You have to manually adjust them through the Control Panel-Sound.
Not sure where the HP Tone Controls drivers are, but you can get them here. -
If you install according to instructions I posted "and you" you will have all controls and they do work.
The HP tone controls did not work as they have lost functionality to work for volume and only work if you have the original OEM drivers installed... which tells me they are not complete in of themselves.
I also had to totally get rid of them before the fix Axel posted would work. -
Not sure about that. I just did a clean install of W7 x64 and downloaded all the latest drivers posted on this first page as well as Smartmenu. That gave me the Volume Slider On Screen Display.
I then installed the HP Tone Controls and now I also have the Bass/Treble Sliders being displayed on the screen and they are working perfectly.
To sum up, install the latest IDT, Smartmenu, and then HP Tone Control and you will have everything working perfectly!!
There is no need to do the old instructions Axel and I posted on the other site and that you coped for us here, if you do the above. And you'll have the latest drivers to boot.
Here is a link for the HP Tone Controls!! -
Good to know Rageman..... I explicitly asked Axel in a PM if I should keep the old smartmenu drivers I have "2.10a" or get the latest and he advised me to keep what I have.
I'm not sure if thats because he wanted to leave well enough alone or whether there are some pitfalls....
Maybe he can elaborate when he sees this post. -
original, direct from HP links for the Tone Control app would be appreciated.....
-
Okay got it.
HP Tone Control Utility HP HDX X18T-1200 CTO Premium Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
Maybe Justin can add this to the front page. It's a must have for me. I hate having to change the Bass/Treble through Windows' Control Panel. And I often adjust my Bass/Treble for my Music and Movies. -
I never got an answer to my question so I'll ask again.
I currently have the version 7.7 Realtek driver from HP's site but its dated 12-11-2009.
The current driver posted on the first page is dated later but the version number is earlier??? " version 7.023 7-7-2010"
Which is the latest?
I also cannot find a link for the auto install version.
The driver only does not claim to be 64bit. -
I did post a response -- 7.023 is the latest and does have a larger version number than 7.007 (see below).
-
-
Anyone try this driver yet? Justin is it ok? It was not added to the list...
-
LOL!... won't be me thats the first to try!
-
Version numbering can be tricky sometimes...
Driver's .inf file is the place to check the "real" version number. In this case it's in rt64win7.inf for 64-bit and rt86win7.inf for 32-bit OS. Inf file also contains deviceID, so you can check if the driver is compatible for your device.
I had also some trouble downloading that driver from realteks site first, but got it finally... It's for both 32 and 64 bits. I can take a look if I can get a direct link for it, but I think the download server name is somehow randomized.
edit
ok, lets try this...
ftp://202.134.71.21/cn/nic/Driver_Win7_7023_06302010.zip -
Oh, but I thought you'd be... LOL.
-
Living dangerously is moving out inspite fears others have..... if you fear a lion is in the camp and won't go outside when there is no lion then your just chicken....but if there is confirmed lion outside ripping people to shreds and you go out anyway, then your stupid or have a really big gun!
-
that link requires a username and password -
Ha-Ha! Alan, you're really a stitch! I'm try to grasp how you can consider, for comparison's sake, that the idea of confronting a lion outside camp relates to the risks of applying often unnecessary updates to a laptop. I understand much better NOW why you do this! LOL! This really brightens my humid hot day...
Regards,
- - Phil -
Let just say I like the excitement of pretty new things, new adventures, new technology and tempting fate..... I just don't want to go to bed with her for fear of what I might catch!
-
The Broadcom wireless drivers you posted looked compatible, but there were two entries in the INF file that were not present in HP's version of the INF. I need someone to try the driver out first since I don't have a Broadcom adapter. Once someone can confirm that it works, I'll post them up.
And this is why I don't post direct links to the Realtek drivers anymore.
Realtek has barred direct linking to their FTP download servers and the only way I can link in an efficient manner is to the download page now.
-
If updating Dv8 drivers provided any of those benefits, Alan, I think I could begin to see merits in your viewpoint.... Ha-Ha! Hee-hee!
So far, all I've seen, and read about, are problems from indescriminately updating drivers, etc. !
Regards,
- - Phil -
Well I do agree in most cases the risks outweigh the benefits..... if it ain't broke, don't fix it....
But then there are those who like to take apart a perfectly good working watch! -
I managed to download that goofy realtek driver.....finally!
Had to have my ethernet plugged in before it would install, otherwise the old one stayed intact.
I also had to reboot to get it to "stick". -
I guess it depends on how much you value the watch - OR how many similar watches you have and can tolerate trashing ...
Regards,
- - Phil -
While many actually use their computer for Games and things that actually tax the power, my hobby is tweaking the computer itself.
While I try to stay within the boundaries of my knowledge base, I do find enjoyment from tweaking my system to make it the fastest and smoothest I can.
Installing new drivers is fun to see what the outcome may be.
I compare it to the old days when I was a kid, many garage mechanics had a racecars in my neighborhood... they loved to tweak to make already fast cars faster and better.
While they seldom actually raced them, they would occasionally take it for a quick spin down the block and a quick 3 - 4 second punch to the gas while the whole neighborhood could listen and all the dogs scattered, they rarely actually used or needed the power at hand.
I was literally a hobby to tweak on it.
Because of that, I have self taught myself and have always been the one in the family that does the building, troubleshooting and tweaking to keep everyones systems in my family running at their best.
I remember guys that would spend hundreds of dollars and many man hours tearing apart a perfectly excellent running engine to tweak or improve one tiny area of the internals.
Call it madness... it doesn't have to make sense.
Maybe an exercise of frustrated talent with no place to go.
I guess its like climbing a mountain.. why do you do it?... I don't know... because you can?
