I just don't trust the system restore as my sole protection.

I guess you're so close if all you need to do is burn Hiren's to a CD and run it. I think you'll find a lot of peace of mind once you've done the first sector-by-sector clone. Even if you didn't do a clone before every update and new s/w install, just doing the first one would provide a great deal of security.

Glad you're enjoying your Dv8 and hope you stay "lucky," Alan.

    Regards,
    - - Phil

P.S. if you have any questions about which choices to use with Ghost, feel free to post here or PM me for details.

Your right, I do need to do a formal Ghost... on xp systems I've had system restore not work or even be available... mysteriously deleted all the backups before..... don't know if win7 sys restore is more reliable... but
    Ghost is.......

I also started using W7 x64 when the first public RC was released and also very quickly made it my primary OS even while it was still an early RC. Even at that point it seemed a vast improvement over the Vista x64 which I had been using for a couple of years before that.

In the 8 months or so before W7 RTM became available, I kept upgrading to all the various W7 release candidate versions as they were leaked on the net. That was a lot of fun. I'm very happy with W7 (and my HP). When I have occasion to work on an XP machine, it feels very antiquated by comparison.

I've used driver sweeper and found it to work quite well although I must admit that lately I've gotten a bit lazy and haven't bothered using the full recommended procedure for upgrading video drivers with no ill effects so far as far as I can tell.

I use the XP Mode of Win 7 (Pro and Ultimate) and find that , running on the same hardware, the XP seems quite good. I never got to run XP before this on an I7 processor with 6gb (tho it only sees slightly less than 4gb) but if XP Mode is any indication of how it would've performed, it's pretty fine.

I, too, Peter, am very happy with Win 7 64-bit and wouldn't go back to Vista EVER! I still run XP on some of my machines and it seems a bit antiquated but quite serviceable. I suspect that most of what I like best about Win 7 comes from the enhanced performance of 64-bit. I never used 64-bit XP but I've read less than flattering comments about it so the 64-bit Win 7 may be a major reason Win 7 seems so much better by comparison.

    - - Phil

There haven't been that many updates this past week, but just to recap:

    07/14/2010
    • Updated Broadcom 2070 Bluetooth driver to version 6.3.0.5600.

This driver thread is a fast one! Just wanted to mention that this thread is officially over 250,000 views (not including my views most likely :p) -- thanks again for the support everyone!

I have looked at the articles you posted about the problems that users were having with the Broadcom Bluetooth installers. It's just shocking really -- if Broadcom can't get their act together in software, then this could be the first time that I cannot trust an official source (and consequently even the company perhaps). This problem leads me to stress what I already mentioned on the first post -- these drivers should be installed at your own risk, and backups never (usually) hurt anyone!

Yes, the package version is different from the actual Bluetooth driver version. (It is similar to how Intel Chipset Device Software works as well in terms of version numbers.)

I haven't tried the new NVIDIA 258.96 graphics driver, and I'm waiting for them to reach WHQL certification (it should hopefully happen this upcoming week). Once WHQL, I will post them up. :)

    Just for another complete re-cap:

    07/19/2010
    • Updated NVIDIA graphics driver to version 8.17.12.5896 (258.96).

    07/22/2010
    • Updated download links to Synaptics TouchPad driver version 15.0.17.4.

I've updated the links to the Synaptics TouchPad driver because of a potential installer issue where the x86 version of setup launches instead of the x64 version, on x64-based systems. Hopefully these new links will fix this problem.

I've already installed the one dated 5-27-10.. how do I know if it installed the x86 version or the x64 version?

I couldn't find that info in details in device manager unless I overlooked it.

Open taskmanager, in processes tab find SynTPEnh.exe. In x64 Windows this process in named SynTPEnh.exe and in x86 it's SynTPEnh.exe *32.

If you are runnig x64 windows, you should have a folder like this in your Windows DriverStore, dated when you installed that driver:
    Code:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\synpd.inf_amd64_neutral_xxxxxxxxx
FileRepository is a (huge) folder containing all your installed drivers. This is (one of the places) where Windows searches for drivers.

I don't think it's possible to install x86 drivers to x64 system and vice versa. If your touchpad is working properly, your driver is correct.

I believe that is right. MS says your install package can be 32-bit, so it can be run under either 32-bit or 64-bit OSes, but it will only install 32-bit drivers to a 32-bit OS and only install 64-bit drivers to a 64-bit OS.

The links in the Broadcom 2070 Bluetooth are messed up with Synaptics Touchpad Links. Please check. You updated the current Broadcom Bluetooth Driver with the New Synaptics Driver.

    Fixed.

It can be quite a problem managing all these threads especially when there are a lot of updates that need to be made. But I haven't given up just yet! :D

I sent out a PM to TheUnreadEmail a while ago in order to find out what is going on. A little concerned about it -- I may have to delete the thread if TheUnreadEmail doesn't update it soon. I encourage users to put up driver threads for other notebooks, but there is a level of commitment to maintaining these types of threads.

Almost the same commitment and fun as buying an expensive boat right? "happy to get it, Happy to get rid of it!.. LOL!"

Well, we do appreciate all the maintenance... don't sell the boat yet.... we are enjoying the ride......

I'm a member of possibly 25 forums... almost every interest and hobby in my life has a forum.....
I frequent and enjoy this one more than then all at this point.....

Again, good job and thanks for being open to receive help from others that are willing to dig around and find all the gold nuggets.... but your the one who melts those nuggets down and give us the pure stuff and tosses the bad....

Its good that we can all watch each others backs.... it gives us all tremendous exposure in the net to be able to get our hands on the latest drivers without all the danger.

We do appreciate you being the quarterback!... :)

True, 257.41 is three days newer than 258.96 -- but since 257.41 looks like it is from an older branch with applied bugfixes, I will be regarding it as a previous release. NVIDIA's version numbering scheme can be confusing at times. Also note that 257.41 does not contain the PhysX software or HDMI Audio driver.

    First post updates:

    07/27/2010
    • Updated IDT High Definition Audio Codec to version 6.10.6288.0.
    • Updated IDT High Definition Audio Codec to version 6.10.6289.0.
    • Added NVIDIA graphics driver version 8.17.12.5741 (257.41).

While I don't endorse the updating of the "HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor driver" for no good reason, Alan, I can explain your issue with "my data sensor doesn't work" insofar as the secondary HDD is concerned.

I cloned my primary drive (SSD) contents to a non-HP HDD with Ghost 11.5 on my free Hiren's BootCD. After I pulled out the SSD and popped in the HDD clone, the primary drive (now an HDD, appeared as supported in BOTH "HP Mobile Data Protection" AND "Intel Rapid Storage Technology". My conclusion is that the HP 3D DriveGuard on your Dv8 (and mine) is not configured to support HDDs in the secondary location but works fine when the HDD is primary. I worked at length with Woods3336 to change the support to the secondary drive to no avail so that remains a mystery.

Also, I'm still using the same "HP Mobile Data Protection" drivers and "HP 3D DriveGuard" software that came on my Dv8 last December so I don't think the issue resides in the drivers or softwares.

    Regards,
    - - Phil

Ah.. thats makes perfect sense.. since a SSD doesn't have an issue with vibration and jarring.... too bad it doesn't support the secondary location though.. oh well...

Seems it would be easy enough to fix if they would just update it.

As I noted, it CAN support the secondary position for HDD, Alan. At least it appears that those who use dual HDDs have coverage on the secondary HDD. At this point, we (Woods3336 & I) have been trying to find the "key" to CHANGING the protection from the primary position to the secondary. He's still "on the hook" to get HP to provide info on how to do this.

thats good to know.. nice to know someone is still working on it..... seems once it see's a SSD drive its done and doesn't look any further.

Maybe they should consider "ignoring" SSD drives rather than looking past them once recognized... kinda attacking the problem from the other end.

I have never unistalled previous IDT drivers before updating to new ones. This time I decided to that, but lost SRS Premium Sound. So back to old drivers (6.10.6284.0) and reinstall latest drivers (6.10.6289.0) on top of old ones and SRS was not gone. So I think latest drivers don't come SRS enabled. 6.10.6289.0 is for dm3, does it have SRS? I'll try 6.10.6288.0 and see if that comes with SRS.

    edit

6.10.6288.0 does not work at all. Tried fresh install and update on top of previous drivers, both ended with BSOD. So only way to get SRS is to install 6.10.6289.0 on top of 6.10.6284.0.

I'm not sure that it ignores SSDs to pay no attention to the HDD in the secondary bay.

My Dv8 came with a single HDD so it never knew there was a secondary when HP released it. I moved the drive from the primary to the secondary bay and inserted an SSD in its place in the primary bay. So, at this point, we don't know how to change the configuration so it will look for an HDD in the secondary bay.

I uninstalled the IDT audio driver through the Programs and Features control panel, restarted, then updated to 6289. Everything is working fine, including the SRS Premium feature. Make sure that the IDT Audio Control Panel is also showing version 1.0.6289.0.

    As for 6288, I haven't tried it out. Maybe I should. :)

It doesn't care about SSDs, Alan. If it comes with only one HDD (in the primary bay), only an HDD in that location will be recognized. If the Dv8 came with two HDDs (one in each of the primary and secondary bays), it would recognize HDDs in either bay.

The problem is "how/where to change the configuration of an originally one-drive system is upgraded to place an SSD in the primary bay and the HDD is moved to the secondary bay?"

    Regards,
    - - Phil

What is the exact model number of your dv7? At the moment, we don't have any AMD-based driver threads, but we can point you to the right page on the HP support site if you can give us the exact model.

The model is an HP Pavilion DV7 3067CL. I've been to HP's page and they rarely ever have updates on drivers there and was just hoping to find a source with something a little more recent. They haven't even updated the video driver since October of last year. The ATI reference drivers work but they may or may not have reduced functionality. Thank you btw.

Also sort of unrelated and I know not the right place but how can I get a signature in my posts. I checked the edit profile section but don't see an option.
