Looking at your model, it looks like you can actually use some of the drivers in this thread. At least, specifically: the IDT Audio Codec, JMicron card reader, HP Quick Launch Buttons, Broadcom OR Atheros wireless LAN, Realtek Ethernet, Synaptics TouchPad, Validity fingerprint reader (if you have one), HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor, and LightScribe System Software (if you have a CD/DVD drive with the feature). Wow, maybe I should just add AMD support to this thread...![]()
Updates to the first post - thanks Z3tor!
07/30/2010
- Updated LightScribe System Software to version 1.18.17.1.
- Updated Intel GMA / HD Graphics to version 8.15.10.2182 [15.17.9(.64).2182].
-
Thanks justinkw1, at least I know a source for drivers in the future. This seems like a pretty good board. Some places trend to have alot of BS posts and it's nice to see a forum this clean and organized.

JMicron JMB38X Card Reader driver 1.0.45.0 available at Windows Update.
Windows Vista/7 x86
Windows Vista/7 x64 -
Yeah, this thread that Justin made needs to be Bookmarked on all of our browsers!!
-
Not only that but it is a good idea to subscribe to the thread with email notification.
-
I didn't see a download link anywhere.. when I check Window update it says I"m up to date and I'm still running version 1.0.43.2 -
Sorry, I don't know direct download link. Here's the links. Use download basket to download.
Microsoft Update Catalog
Bigger files are for x64. You need only one package to update drivers. Exctract and use device manager to update. Maybe someone can figure out direct links... -
Think I"m good... I don't like messing with microsofts half backed stuff.....
I'll wait. -
Installed the card reader driver via device manager w/o issue. Only hard part was having to use IE to download stuff from the MS Update site. Not a fan of IE and don't appreciate being forced to use it.
-
Right on! Alan. My card reader works perfectly so I won't be updating its driver.
Regards,
- - Phil -
Couldn't figure out how to get beyond extracting the downloaded file and clicking on setup.exe on the Intel Chipset stuff. Would appreciate if someone could advise exactly what I have to do after I get that far?
-
Extract the zip file to a folder e.g intel_chipset. Hold Shift and right mouse click on that folder. Select "Open command window here". On the command window type "setup.exe -overall" (without quotes) to overwrite all drivers. Hope this helps.
...and complete the installer. Reboot. -
That worked great! Thank you very much for the clear and concise instructions.

Sorry, is this Chipset compatible with the HP HDX16t? I have the intel P7550 2.26 Ghz processor...
I was looking thru all my devices and couldnt locate the Chipset driver, what is it listed under? Curious as to know what driver im running currently... thanx. -
Hey, did you ever do that fresh install?
-
Yes, it's compatible. The Intel Chipset Device Software installs more than just one driver actually -- it installs quite a few things. This can include PCI-Express, USB, and all integrated controllers. Most of these components are listed under the System devices. The version numbers may not necessarily match up with the package version which has been mentioned.
Currently testing 9.1.2.1008 of the Intel Chipset Device Software and the new JMicron drivers; I'll post them up once I can confirm that they're working.
Also, on a side note -- this thread has reached its 1st anniversary!
(shoots confetti in the air)
-
Any idea what benefits it may offer? (I don't generally update anything unless I know beforehand that it offers some benefit or fixes something that may have relevance to a Dv8). Sometimes, it's just the latest package that adds support for some additional machines and doesn't do anything for a Dv8, etc., etc. Any idea?
Regards,
- - Phil -
Just installed it and I have to say that it doesn't really change anything compared to 9.1.2.1007. I might not post this up because of the lack of changes, and also because there are a couple more steps to installation (this can confuse newer users).
I've also tried the new JMicron card reader drivers and they work without issue. Note that prior removal of previous drivers through Programs and Features is recommended.

Kudos!!! Time just flies by when you're having so much fun!
Congratulations on the anniversary, Justin!

Actually, yes, rageman, Im sorry I didn't update you but YES I DID DO IT. and let me F****** tell you, it's FAST AS ALL HELL!!!!! I highly recommend wiping ur system clean, install a fresh x64 copy, and use this site to DL and install the latest drivers (which is awsome cuz u dont have to install HP BloatWare) and customize ur system the way YOU want it....
Right now, im running at a constant 25% RAM usage, processor usage rarely if ever exceeds 50% during regular tasks, and i only have -4- msconfig.exe STARTUP prog's!!! Have Hibernate TURNEED OFF, disabled my pagefile, did a couple other tweaks that lets my system FLY!!! its great man, If ur thinking of doing it let me know I Can give u some other really good tweaks..
Currently, Im learning all about HDD Partitioning and how to maximize speed via partititioning outer layer of platter for stowage of OS... things get more complicated but im learning... very ineteresting.
I also ordered the PE4H package which can be seen here Cant wait to get it up and running, plan on using a nvidida GTX460.. lemme know what u think! -
Cheers! Keep hunting 'em!

JMicron has released JMB38X Card Reader driver 1.00.47 WHQL (2010/07/30)
Release notes
Download driver (.zip) -
Told you man! It's the only way to go. I too am very happy w/ my fresh install.
-
Thanks for the update.

Any idea what benefits this update may offer? Sometimes, it's just the latest package that adds support for some additional machines and doesn't do anything for a Dv8, etc., etc. Any idea?

According to JMicron's release notes, the new version 1.0.47.3 offers the following since 1.0.43.2:
I'll update the first post when I get the chance. -
If you use Firefox, you can also assign it to use ram as its cache file instead of the hardrive..... as fast as SSD is, Ram is even faster!.....
To get an idea of how fast it is.... close firefox and immediately try to reopen it.
If you are using the hardrive as your cache location it will error telling you that it has to wait.. thats because it wasn't finished closing the cache file when you tried to reinitialize it.
Now assign your cache to ram and see the difference!
You can close FF and immediately reopen it.... browsing is a similar experience... stinkin fast!
This is not only faster, but will significantly reduce writes to the SSD while using the browser.
Instructions: Open Firefox -> Type "about:config" (without quotes) into the address bar -> Enter -> now you will see the filter bar to enter searches into....find and double-click on "browser.cache.disk.enable" to set the value to False, Note, if you simply copy and paste or type "browser.cache.disk.enable", it will find it for you -> Right-Click anywhere on the blank screen -> Pick "New" -> Integer -> Preference Name "disk.cache.memory.capacity" -> value memory size in KB. Enter 32768 for 32MB, 65536 for 64MB, 131072 for 128MB, etc. I use the highest setting of "131072" -> restart Firefox
Firefox tries to doublescan if you have an AV program there is no need causing dragging to the system.
The way to turn off the doublescan is to:
"browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone".... toggle to "false". -
Humm.. I simply downloaded it and extracted with winzip to a directory "don't drag and drop" and doubleclicked setup and it installed fine.... I too still show 9.1.1.1022.
-
I don't think it actually installs if you just extract and click setup.exe. I had done that and a few things happened but it was much more comprehensive what happened after I installed it using the method z3tor provided.
-
According to Intel instructions, Alan, running setup.exe may not fully install updates to all devices. I posted a description here a while back of how I verified that and had to update each one individually and manually to make them all update.
Z3tor, quoted above, describes the procedure that Intel calls for but is better since he included some handy shortcuts for Windows 7 usage, etc. Works really smoothly using his procedure.

Whats the big secret? -
Agreed, thanks for the extra commands.. that made a "major" difference!
Also when I run performance scores I used to always get 6.9... now I get 7.0. -
Updated the first post with the card reader drivers:
08/02/2010
- Updated JMicron JMB38X Card Reader driver to version 1.0.47.3 (thanks Z3tor).
Hrmmm...the new driver worked fine with me. If you have any previous versions (including 1.0.45.0), uninstall them from both Programs and Features and Device Manager. Then try installing the new version and see if that works. -
I'm not exactly sure why, but the last 2 (at least those) SATA controller drivers actually made using my eSATA drive a pain, plugging it in would cause my music to slow down to about .75 speed, and I was running the DPC latency checker, which would report over 22k for a solid 20 seconds before windows even did anything with the drive. Trying to move anything over to it would result in the drive disconnecting, and starting the lag all over again, and its done that over multiple clean installs in the last few months. Using the stock driver that comes with Windows 7 doesn't give any problems oddly enough.
For the record, I have this Newegg.com - Rosewill RX-358-S BLK (Black) 3.5" SATA to USB & eSATA Ext. Enclosure w/Int.80mm fan with this inside Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Any ideas? I don't notice any difference of my internal drive performance without the special drivers, so I've just left them uninstalled. -
Don't know whats up.. but 1.0.45.0 gave me the same error.. I reinstalled "JMicron JMB38XCard Reader Driver v1.0.43.2 May 14 2010" just fine.
I tried uninstalling and even rebooting and both 45 and 47 gave me the error... I'm sticking with 43.3 as it works. -
I guess that you had a problem with the newer ones. Glad that 43.3 is working for you, Alan. I sent a PM about it (have you run chkdsk before installing any newer ones?) but I guess you got something that works now. HooRay! I'm still running 39 and it works just fine, FWIW.
Regards,
- - Phil -
So far I haven't noticed any problems with J.Micron 1.0.47.3. Installed fine and is working fine here (so far, at least).

If you wanna browse the net faster you can bypass all that and just download Opera. Blazing fast compared to FF and as for IE7.. pfffftt I assume you could guess the speed difference... howver, seems to be good tweak for FF users, I Can imagine the boost in performance.. good post.
to be honest, im not precisely sure what you're trying to get at there, overall computer perforamnce utilitizng RAM cache or attempting to make ur browser run as fast as possible? I currently have no issues whatsoever with the speed of my browser..
Also , note you should ALWAYS turn OFF any file-scanning AV setting during high CPU operations, such as gaming, downloading while simultaneously extracting/compressiong files, etc. -

Apparently from what ive read all this JMicron card reader driver update/patchfix simply allows Greater Than > 32 GB flash mem cards to be read either with greater efficientcy or alltogether, whereasbefore im assuming 32GB was the flashdrives max... thats pretty much it.. (according to win7 update detailed nfo explaination what the update is for) -

Question guys: any way to make my HDX's remote control work with other media players OTHER THAN the HP's bloatware "media player" , if I dare call it that lol =) (such as VLC, BS player pro, etc...) any patch out there or registry edit tha could be done to make it work?? sorry for chnaging subject!
-
FF is nothing special without all the tweaks... but at least it "can" be tweaked.....and lots of addons available... Chrome has limited customization IMO but its fast too.
Here is an interesting article..... -
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
Interesting article... To me, they are getting way too technical with all these SunSpider and acidrain tests (who comes up with these silly benchmarks names anyway??) I dont care what any comparison article says, for daily regular browsing, nothing beats Opera in speed, nothing. I've used them all and Opera is noticeably faster, to me at least.. Im quite suprised it ranked Safari as #1, I wouldve thought it would have came in lower than FireFox... Safari always seems sluggish to me, and a bit of a resource hog.. -

I know some people are passionate about their browsers and I've entertained the idea of switching but I just can't find enough evidence to substantiate switching.
If I had an older slower computer, it sounds like Opera excells based on this and some other articles.
But if you have some horsepower, others seems much faster.
The DV8T has a good amount of muscle to move a small program alright.. but keep in mind a small program may have a limit to how fast it will go no matter what engine is pushing it.
In other words, it may not be built to utilize the full muscle of a 4 core processor and so other programs "or browsers" may be better suited for such a machine as the DV8T.
I have found that Firefox with Cache set to ram is as fast if not faster than Chrome and has many cool features and customization options that Chrome does not offer.
I do allot of secure web browsing to pay bills, stocks etc and just any browser won't work with all sites.
Firefox and IE are probrably the top two at being compatible with all sites.
While Google has the money and muscle to turn those odds, they run lean for speed and miss many options.
Lets put this in perspective of a game.
There are many games that are light on their feet and take little resources to run. A fast computer will make them run perfect but not any faster than a slower computer thats also fully utilizes the capabilites of the game.
When you have a powerful machine, its fun to run programs that are full featured, rich in options to tweak, and are compatible with most any and all other web sites.
Without getting into a debate of passion of who's daddy is the best.... suffice to say its good to try them all and toss the ones you don't like or want.
How each program is written will determine how it runs on a given machine with a given type of processor and internet connection etc.
I must say I do like programs that are open source because while not always cutting edge, they serve the broadest needs of compatibility and features.
Having said all that, I have yet to "try" Opera.. and may check it out.
Firefox is quite a speed demon when the tweaks are applied is all I'm saying..... I can't find a good argument for leaving.... -
PanzerHauptmann Notebook Consultant
yeah maybe when I toss my ancient HP relic HDX 16t and get a REAL Computer with some MUSCLE then I can behold the true speed & power of the mighty 'Fox in all her splendor, with all options and plug-ins ON like COOL PIX!!! YEAH!!! I doubt Firefox, Opera, or IE were designed to run on your quad-core i7 machine.
Just DL Opera and u telll me what u think mr. horsepower.
It's generally regarded as the worlds fastest browser, mainly simply by the way in which the source code was written. But, dont take my
word for it..
-
Sorry your so touchy about it.... but usually if you want good reviews and the real truth on a product you never go to the website that has an interest in promoting it.... especially the website that sells it or makes it!
I sent you a link that mentioned some objective viewpoints I found in about 10 seconds on google.
While you never know if the consumer reports are being lobbied or bribed, all you can do is your best to find honest folks who want to share.
I go by what normal users say rather than competitors or promoters...... "being the other extreme".
If the reviewers has anything at all to gain or lose, the report will be slanted and biased.
The DV8T is not the fastest thing out there, but as you know, many programs need more horsepower to make them Dance while others have a small footprint and the DV8T is quite a bargain for the expenses involved.
While the smaller ones can still be fast, they can seldom do both "fast with a small footprint and carry a heavy payload" unless the programming written is very very good.
Isn't this always the big question?
I'm just going from what others say.. maybe they are wrong......
But next time you send a link, try to send one thats not from Opera.... Likewise I will not send you links that downplay its strengths from one of its competitors.
The truth is what we are seeking here.
But it sounds like you like Opera enough that your not going to try anything else so its good you are happy..... Just don't be dumb and happy! -
I love it when these discussions are, as Fox News says, "Fair and Balanced". Thanks for pointing out the lack of objectivity in sources here, Alan.
I tried Opera and liked it, in fact, but went back to FireFox for its open support of standards-based browsing. I haven't been back to Opera though I'm sure it's quite good.
This controversy has triggered my curiousity so I think I'll download it and give it another try.

You got me wrong, Im not touchy about it. "Fastest Browser" is quite ambiguous anyway. I don't care what browser you use, I was speaking mainly from personal experience, I suppose in hindsight I should have been more emphatic about that fact.
After reviewing a few sites it turns out Safari seems to be the fastest conditionally. But then again, it all depends.
-
No prob... I'm still up in the air about the whole deal.
I see the latest version of Opera "10.5?" has really stepped up to the plate and seems a strong competitor.
Firefox has brought their speed up boasting that 3.5 and beyond is the cats meow... Chrome on the other hand tries to stay light on resources to maintain the edge on speed, however many people like the resources they are " light" on!..... LOL!
I've tried Firefox 64 bit and it is indeed fast on my 64bit machine/OS.
Too bad they have gone to sleep on making flash happen on the same browser.. but Chrome "64bit" has the same issue.
The main thing that makes Firefox a screamer is the ability to make the cache operate in Ram... if I could figure out how to do that with Chrome or Opera, it would be fun to try them.
Its fun how this thread can waver down rabbit trails and still stay on topic "sorta"....
We have decent running machines in that we have the DV8t.... its fun to see what browser can utilize its resources the best.
It becomes obvious as you study that some browsers are tweaked to run with a given type of processor architecture the best, while others try to do them all but then are heavier in resources. Opera seems to be the best on systems weak in muscle in that its light on resources and doesn't demand too much muscle to push it.... thats a good thing... as long as when muscle "is" applied it can utilize the added power from the faster processors, ram, etc.
Anyway..... I appreciate your passion for Opera Panzerman "short"... it sounds like its worthy of checking out... their claim to be the "fastest browser on earth" keeps getting challenged and beat considering that no browser beats in all aspects on all levels of testing... Unless when your comparing your favorite browser to IE or course!.. LOL!
