Ever heard of the iPod? Most people do not research the iPods competition before they buy.

I think that commercials' effects are more subtle. You may not care about the item that's being advertised, but you're still being bombarded with the message that "you should be buying something". It gives you the feeling since you haven't bought anything for a while, you start to think about it.

Is this thread about the new GPU in the HP laptops or about advertising?
Come on, lets keep it on topic instead of flaming each other

HP UK finally updated their site to include the dv2500 :D

No option to customize the configuration and none of the versions available include the 8400M

Does anyone know if the UK will get the 8400M eventually or should I start looking for an alternative?

Yea and also about $200 more than the regular one  because yesterday it was only $100 difference, but today they seem to have gotten rid of the $100 instant rebate as well!

i think that they got many orders from the special edition and now try to get more money from that notebook and thats why they took the instant rebate. So maybe they will put it again when the sales drop again.

Btw...for how long will the dv6500tse(the white one) will be avaible?

I ordered the dv6500t Special Edition two days ago. It ended up costing me a total of $1,495.80

    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
    - 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
    - 2 GB RAM
    - 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
    - HP Imprint (Influx) + Fingerprint Reader +Webcam
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    - 120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition
    - 3 Year Express Warranty
    - Logitech MX610 Cordless Laser Mouse
    - HP DeskJet F380 All-In-One Printer

For under $1,500 I was really pleased to get the 3 year warranty and pretty much top of the line in everything for the dv6500tse. How much is everyone else paying for theirs?

I am wondering, does anyone know of a site where you can compare desktop video cards to laptop cards? I will be doing the tests myself anyway when the new laptop arrives; but I was curious how this new 8400M GS compares to a OEM DELL Radeon 9800 PRO.

64mb is dedicated, more is available through sharing. It should be able to run those games fine, just not at high settings.

I guess that you can play every present game in the world with the 8xxx cards only at different settings and then, what do you think is most important when analyzing the FPS you can get for a specific game on a specific machine?

Is it most important to have 128/256 instead of 64Mb GDDR, or is it most important that the memory has 128bit speed rather than 64bit, or is it the fact that the card has 16/32 pipelines (stream processors) instead of just 8?

    Yes, see below...

Yes. With 1GB of system ram, you can get 319MB of shared graphics ram, and with 2GB it goes to an astronomical number of 800 some odd MB of v-ram.

Yep. This my guess, at least for the next few months it will be true. Future DX10 games and Assassin's Creed might change the whole thing....

I got that but when choosing a specific 8xxx video card, how can you prioritize your judgment factors? Is it most important to have 128/256 instead of 64Mb GDDR, or is it most important that the memory has 128bit speed rather than 64bit, or is it the fact that the card has 16/32 pipelines (stream processors) instead of just 8?

The 64 bit memory interface is going to be pretty crippling in any advanced game. Crysis on a 8400M GS? Sure, but I wouldn't expect it to play any better than at 800x600 and low-med settings.

Ok, here's my thought about this card:

    1. 8400GS is far better than the 8400G by having double number of pipelines (16 vs 8), which means better image quality but performances may be almost the same (except FPS).

    2. 8400GT is far better than the 8400GS by having double memory speed at 128bit vs 64bit. Both the FPS and memory bandwidth are hugely increased while the GT will come with 256Mb instead of the max 128Mb in the GS cards.

    3. 8600GS is only better than the 8400GT because all the core and the shader processors are extremely overclocked !! and i'm backing my statement by comparing the speeds with the 8600GT which has normal clock speeds.

    4. 8600GT.. well.. 32 pipelines.. the best.. nuff said !!

The 8600GT is clearly the best. The 8600 series is generally better than the 8400 series, and it goes in order of performance, G, GS, and GT (G being the weakest, GT being the strongest). The 8400GS is a fine video card, and many benchmarks are indicating it's a between the 7400 and 7600 in power, which is pretty darn good, being close to the 7600.

You should be able to play any older game you can think of fine (Half-Life 2, Doom III, Quake 4, Far Cry, Battlefield 1942, etc), but it may not run the newest games at high settings (F.E.A.R., S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Oblivion). It should still run these games, maybe even at high settings on some, but your performance is obviously going to suffer a good amount.

The 8400GS is not the best video card on the market, no, but it is most definitely adequate for most gamers. I'd be willing to bet you can play Source engine games fully maxed (including AA and AS) and still get playable framerates, depending on the other options (RAM and processor) you choose.

It's not going to play future games like Crysis perfectly, but I bet they will be playable at lower settings. Developers are fairly good about optimizing their games nowadays (especially AAA titles from people like Epic, iD, etc), so I'd bet you'll be able to play Crysis at your native resolution at low/medium settings (most settings low, a few at medium).

I summarized your post to underline your conclusions. Well, I would certainly agree with you, if they'd offered the 256Mb version in dv6500 at least. But playing on a dv2500 with only 64Mb is not a happy choice at all ! :(

I'm guessing it will be most unlikely any time soon, seeing as how the 8400M GS and 8600M GS don't even share the same mobo on the dv9500t (meaning HP will have to add yet another slew of system boards to inventory for the 8600M GT to cover the model lines). Sounds expensive. (IMO)

well those guys are saying the same wrong idea like many are here:
    " NVidia GeForce 8400M GT
Successor of GeForce Go 7400 with DirectX 10 support, lower clocked 8600M GS, 16 stream processors, 128 bit memory bus
    "

in no way is the 8400GT lower clocked because this would say the same thing about the 8600GT which has way lower clocks than the 8600GS !

64MB dedicated. As stated earlier, when shared, you get a lot more. The RAM isn't as important in video cards as its features and structure are as well. The RAM number is overrated.

I know that all the new systems offer shared memory to the GPU but you cannot just say that the 64Mb 8400GS is even close to a 256Mb 8400GT (Vaio FZ), can you ? :)

As stated before: the amount of RAM a graphics card has means very little. So, yes, it is close. Especially when you share the memory. :)

I agree as well, what matters most is the clock speed of the GPU, as well as the other components. RAM is probably the least important part of the graphics card because it can come from shared memory. The 8400GT however has a slightly higher GPU clock (450MHz) but where i think the major improvement comes in is that it has a 128-bit Memory Interface, allowing greater RAM access at greater speeds (look at the memory bandwith, there is a difference of ~10 GB/s between the GS and the GT).

Check it out for yourself on Nvidia's website

*if you would like you can always try to overclock your videocard, there are several FREE and paid programs available to do this. If you are going to however, I would make sure that you only do it when you NEED the boost in performance, as it will cause your card to run warmer, and laptops are not too great at keeping their components cool.

I posted yesterday on this thread another Nvidia link here with all 5 models of the 8 generation card. In addition to what you just said, the shader clock is also 100MHz faster ! :)

Should I get the 8400 GS or the 8600 GS? Will the 8400 GS be able to play games like oblivion? I want a good graphics card, but I wouldn't classify myself as a hardcore gamer. Oblivion is probably the highest setting game i want to play. And i also want to play spore when it comes out.

if you're playing Oblivion then you ARE a hardcore gamer ! :D
there's no way you can play it on a 8400GS card. even with the 8600GS you will probably have to lower all the settings to low-mid level so you can get a decent FPS rate.

The 8400 will struggle but the 8600GS will play oblivion on high. My desktop's 6800GS (which is about equal in power to a 8600m GS) handles it on high just fine. By current standards the game isn't that demanding.

your desktop 6800GS is stronger than 8600M GS and maybe equal to 8800M GS ;)

    I don't think a GeForce 6800GS is equivalent to a 8800M GS....
